Thomasians participate in coastal clean-up community service day

Now on its second year, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� SIMBAHAYAN Community Development Office, together with the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Human Resource Department organized the Community Service Day that consisted of a Coastal Clean-Up and Nature Walk Activity held at the Las Piñas – Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA). Attended by 50 participants, the activity was a proactive response to Pope Francis’ Laudato Si and in support of the University’s goal of involving the administrators, faculty members, support staff and alumni.

Before embarking on the actual clean-up, a brief introduction about the area was given by ��ϲ�ֱ�� SIMBAHAYAN Director Assoc. Prof. Mark Anthony
D. Abenir, DSD, as a way of formally starting the program. Asst. Prof. Melanie D. Turingan, Ph.D., gave the participants some reminders in order to carry out a successful coastal clean-up.

The group comprised of administrators, faculty members and support staff were able to gather 75 sacks of garbage after the clean-up activity. A nature-walk activity followed, in which the participants were able to see the Philippines’ sixth wetland of international importance but is at present under the threat of reclamation and environmental degradation

SIMBAHAYAN, OSA hold mid-year forum on community development projects for university-wide student organizations

Forty student organizations participated in the University-Wide Student
Organizations (USO) Midyear Forum spearheaded by the SIMBAHAYAN
Community Development Office and the Office for Student Affairs held at the Tan Yan Kee Student Center, Audio Visual Room, ��ϲ�ֱ��.

The forum was a follow-up on the call for the recognized university-wide student organizations to implement a community development project.
��ϲ�ֱ�� SIMBAHAYAN Director Assoc. Prof. Mark Anthony D. Abenir, DSD, gave
the update on the number of student organizations with submitted proposals as of the first semester including the budget requested for the project. He also asked the officers of the organizations about the difficulties that led them not to submit their proposals. He also answered some
questions coming from the students and their faculty advisers, as well.
Ms. Mary Coleen Anne Nicolas, an alumna from the Faculty of Arts and
Letters, discussed the impact of student organizations in the lives of the University’s partner community. Particularly cited was the BUTIL program of the Becarios de Santo Tomas.

Four organizations that implemented their projects in the first semester, namely, Becarios de Santo Tomas and its ‘BUTIL Scholarship Program’ that was started almost a decade ago; Kabayanihan Youth whose ‘Bridge Bulaklak ng Pag-asa’ is a project tasked to address the lack of income and resources while focusing on parent empowerment; ROTARACT Central
with its ‘Panitik at Pagkapilipino,’ a seminar workshop about Philippine Literature focusing on educating the children about Filipino heritage, sports and culture; and the Central Student Council (CSC) with its advocacy projects.

These projects, according to SIMBAHAYAN are aligned to the Program
Areas of the University’s community development office which are: Education, Livelihood, and Heritage, Culture, and Sports and Development.
However, the advocacy projects presented by the Central Student Council
are based on the strategic plans submitted by the organization upon recognition. The projects were approved because of their benefits to ��ϲ�ֱ�� student.

Four ��ϲ�ֱ�� programs receive AUN-QA recognition

Four academic programs of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� have
been added to the list of degree programs granted certification and
recognition by the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance
Network (AUN-QA). Pharmacy, Medical Technology, Elementary
Education, and Secondary Education were assessed by the AUN-QA in
June 2017 and were issued certification that is valid from 2017 until 2022.
The four degree programs were certified by the AUN-QA because of
their high local accreditation level, all the programs having been granted
the PACUCOA Accreditation Level 4.

Prior to the newly certified programs, the AUN-QA also certified four
programs in March 2017. These programs were: Accountancy, Biology,
Chemistry, and Psychology. The programs were granted recognition from
March 2017 until March 2022.

Four degree programs are also scheduled for the AUN Quality
Assessment from April 23 to April 25, 2018. These programs are: Nursing,
Biochemistry, Electronics Engineering, and Chemical Engineering.
��ϲ�ֱ�� became an associate member of the AUN-QA on January 13, 2016.

This enabled the University to apply for the AUN Quality Assessment.
The AUN-QA network is a division of the ASEAN University Network,
composed of Chief Quality Officers assigned by the AUN universities to
ensure the improvement of the quality of education in higher education
institutions for the benefit of the members of the ASEAN University
Network.

TEDx��ϲ�ֱ��: Illuminating path, detours of life

Successfully joining a world-renowned educative brand in its mission to
elevate ideas worth spreading, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� held TEDx��ϲ�ֱ��
on March 10, 2018 at the Central Lab Auditorium, ��ϲ�ֱ��.

“TEDx��ϲ�ֱ��” is an independentlyorganized conference licensed from popular non-profit media organization TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design)
and was spearheaded by the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Central Student Council (��ϲ�ֱ��-CSC), in coordination with the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Medical Technology Society and the Office of Public Affairs.

TED’s main conference series, commonly known as “TED Talks,” refers to
its Vancouver-based talks that are posted online for free distribution, while their TEDx initiative allows for independent organizers for cities, academic institutions, or other local communities and organizations to have their own licensed TED experience no matter where they are.

One thousand three hundred thirtysix applicants vied for a chance to be part pf the Thomasian TED audience, with the exclusive event’s two-week screening period ending with 100 chosen participants.

“TEDx is very much aligned with our mission as Thomasians and as a University,” ��ϲ�ֱ�� Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., mentioned in his welcome remarks, citing the engraved passage on the wall of the Benavides library. It is a mission stated in Latin originating from the
medallion of the Monument to Benavides at Plaza Santo Tomas in Intramuros, which was built in 1892.

The English translation is, ‘Darkness covers this land in a mental mist.
This is the task of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� – to spread the light.’
Balancing the light of intellect and the light of hope, the talks aimed at illuminating minds and hearts. Fr. Miranda urged the students, “I hope you will always be surrounded with very good ideas… That is important because soon, you will be sharing light – the light that frees us from ignorance. And that all starts from ideas.” With the theme “Wavelength,” defined as the distance between successive waves that move in continuous motion, a wavelength moves in a specific direction despite its dynamic motion in crests and troughs.

TEDx��ϲ�ֱ��, in adhering to its theme, highlighted the inevitability of ups and
downs in life, along with innovative ideas and inspiration to continue moving forward. CEMEX Philippines Director for Corporate Communications and Public Affairs Mr. Chito Maniago began the
afternoon by sharing how using gift of gab responsibly allowed him to succeed in life

and eventually lifted his family from poverty. He taught the participants
to communicate more effectively so they can be instruments of change.
Following Mr. Maniago was the University of the Philippines
System Executive Vice President and Chairman of Physicians for
Peace Dr. Teodoro J. Herbosa, who discussed his realization that
health and politics are intertwining wavelengths – that good health
reforms needed to solve health inequity will only be achieved with
good politics.

The third speaker was instructor and supervising teacher at the ��ϲ�ֱ��
College of Education Ms. Eleanor Bahrami-Hessari, who motivated
students and future educators to step out of one’s comfort zone and
be confident in one’s identity no matter the challenge.

The other speakers included oncologist and trustee of the Philippine Cancer Society Dr. Kelly Salvador. He inspired future Thomasian doctors to be both competent and compassionate healers who treat each life as valuable. In his impassioned speech, he emphasized that those who are determined to be good physicians, must also have compassion. An empathetic doctor’s
task is not just to heal the illness, but to strengthen the heart and spirit of the afflicted persons and their families.

Following Dr. Salvador was the founder and current president of HealthCore and advocate of Medical Tourism Ms. Jocelyn Socao-Alumno. She shared that the hard roads and detours of life are worth the journey, as it will allow the tough ones to forge themselves to be better and help more people along the way.

The final speaker of the day was ABS-CBN talent Mr. Robi Domingo, who encouraged the audience to see the crests of life instead of the troughs and to never remain stagnant, but rather keep moving forward, as life is a
journey of continuous learning.

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� AB – WKSiM Poland faculty exchange program: media education transcending boundaries

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� Faculty of Arts and Letters and the College of Social and
Media Culture (Wyższa Szkoła Kultury Społecznej i Medialnej) of Toruń,
Poland have completed the first round of journalism faculty exchanges under a multi-year academic and research cooperation agreement funded by the Erasmus+ Program of the European Union.

The ��ϲ�ֱ��- WSKSiM exchange program Under the first inter-institutional
agreement between the two schools, is the exchange of faculty members who will deliver lectures before the students of the two institutions. Asst. Prof. Christian V. Esguerra, a faculty member under the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Journalism program was at the WSKSiM to deliver lectures from November 27
to December 1, 2017. As the WSKSiM counterpart, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Faculty of Arts
and Letters hosted Dr. Monika Szetela of WSKSiM from March 2 to 7, 2018,
for a series of lectures delivered before undergraduate students of the Faculty of Arts and Letters and graduate students of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School.

The Memorandum of Understanding on Academic and Research Cooperation between ��ϲ�ֱ�� and WSKSiM was signed on December 16, 2016 by ��ϲ�ֱ�� Rector Very Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P., and WSKSiM Rector Rev. Fr. Zdzislaw Klafka, CSsR.

Arts and Letters Dean Prof. Michael Anthony C. Vasco, Ph.D., said the initial
success of the exchange program compelled ��ϲ�ֱ�� and WSKSiM, both Catholic
institutions, to renew and even expand the academic and research partnership.

Under a new agreement already in the works, its scope will be expanded to
journalism and communication, political science and culture studies, which means that at least three faculty members from Arts and Letters could possibly teach at WSKSiM.

Christian Esguerra lectures at WSKSiM Asst. Prof. Christian Esguerra lectured on the Philippine independence movement in the “Catholics and Independence” Polish National Conference at WSKSiM. Esguerra delivered four lectures before students at WSKSiM – “Media Under Siege,” “Catholic
Journalism,” “Catholic Journalism in the Philippines” and “Journalism Education in the Philippines.”

Esguerra also appeared in the television program “Unfinished Conversations,” broadcast nationally in Poland, and answered a number of questions from Polish viewers on the situation in the Philippines under President Rodrigo Duterte.

Monika Szetela of WSKSiM lectures in ��ϲ�ֱ�� Dr. Monika Szetela of WSKSiM
conducted a series of lectures delivered before Journalism students and Master of Arts in Communication students. Szetela, a journalist and journalism educator who heads the Journalism and Social Communication Department of WSKSiM, talked extensively about the history of
Poland as well as trends in European and Polish journalism.
Szetela, who also has training in political science, career counselling and
theology, is the editor-in- chief of a monthly youth magazine. She lectured on “Polish Media after the Transformation,” “Media in the Post-Soviet World” and “Media in Central Europe towards the Media in the
�´ǰ��.”

At the 2nd John Jefferson Siler Memorial Forum held on March 5, 2018 at
the Thomas Aquinas Research Complex.

Five Science programs granted Level IV re-accreditation status by PACUCOA

Five programs from the College of Science were officially
re-accredited at the highest level by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation (PACUCOA) through the Federation of Accrediting Agencies of the Philippines (FAAP) as the certifying body.

Re-accredited for Level IV status were: Mathematics major in Actuarial
Science, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology and Psychology. According to College of Science Secretary Assoc. Prof. Mary C. Martin, upon receipt of this re-accredited status from PACUCOA in 2017, the five programs were then endorsed to FAAP, the umbrella organization of accreditation agencies, for official certification as Level IV. The status covers the period of November 2016 to November 2021.

With the Level IV status of a program comes full autonomy, which enables school administrators to offer new graduate programs and open learning or distance education and extension classes related to existing Level IV courses, without prior approval of the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

A program may only apply for a Level IV accreditation only after
five years of Level III re-accredited status. In the accreditation process, the
programs were evaluated according to sets of criteria and procedures, which encourage high maintenance of standards and education. The resulting certifications granted by the accrediting agency and the certifying body, recognizes that the programs meet the criteria set by PACUCOA
and are comparable to similar programs in excellent foreign universities.

The University currently has 26 FAAP and PACUCOAaccredited Level IV programs and a total of 47 accredited programs.

The FAAP is the CHEDauthorized network of accrediting agencies within the country that can certify accreditation levels of academic programs
so as to grant benefits such as progressive deregulation, while its affiliate member PACUCOA is a private accrediting agency which gives formal recognition to an educational institution by attesting that its academic program maintains excellent standards in its educational
operations, in the context of its aims and objectives.

��ϲ�ֱ��, GT Foundation, Inc. sign memorandum of agreement for turnover of Dr. George S.K Ty Hall

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� held a turnover ceremony for GT Foundation’s donation of the “Dr. George S.K Ty Hall” to the University on March 8, 2018 at the fourth floor of the Buenaventura Garcia Paredes O.P. Building, ��ϲ�ֱ��.
The Memorandum of Agreement was signed by ��ϲ�ֱ�� Rector Very Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, OP.., representing ��ϲ�ֱ�� and Metrobank Foundation President Mr. Aniceto Sobrepeña. The witnesses of the MOA signing were ��ϲ�ֱ�� Vice Rector for Finance Rev. Fr. Rolando M. Castro, O.P., GT Foundation Deputy Executive Director, Mr. Nicanor L. Torres, Jr., and ��ϲ�ֱ�� Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P. The Dr. George S.K.Ty Hall, located at the fourth floor of the Paredes Building, was named after Metrobank Founder and Group Chairman Dr. George Siao Kian Ty.

Dr. Ty studied in ��ϲ�ֱ�� and in 2014, he was conferred an honorary degree, Doctor of Humanities, by the University.

The GT Foundation, Inc. was established on October 7, 2009 to administer the philanthropic works of the Ty family which were focused on health, environment, legacy projects, and grants. The foundation incorporates the humanitarian activities of the Ty family and the different programs that are aimed at providing for the needs of the underprivileged members of different communities.

Mañosa exhibit mounted in ��ϲ�ֱ�� Museum

The life of the renowed Thomasian architect Francisco “Bobby” Manosa was celebrated last February 27, 2018 at the exhibit titled the “Visionary Comes Home: A Manosa Beyond Architecture” at the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Museum Gallery .

Manosa’s contribution to architecture—spanning for more than six decades—had enriched the Philippine culture and identity. Concentrated on the life of the renowed architect, the exhibit had chapters that presented a timeline of how Manoza embraced and developed his craft.

Diwa ng Anyo boasted the indigenous designs and how the endemic craft was superior in itself. Moreover, this chapter underscored the significant role of vernacular architecture that molded the Filipino identity as professionals through his techniques—despite being native—which proved to be innovative and translatable to modern solutions.

Likas at Likha exhibited how the materials and processes contribute to the identity of the structure. Tagpuan at Ugnayan was about the didactic intent of buildings as a great avenue for social interaction, that is, if built well and true to its purpose. Danas at Aliwalas showed the value and experience of aliwalas that resist literal translation but was conveyed instead through Mañosa’s work.

Finally, Usbong at Yabong showed his formative years in ��ϲ�ֱ��, while Laro at Hiraya was the portrait of the architect as a young man in his playful and imaginative years.

Among his notable works were the designs of Bahay Kubo, the Coconut Palace, the EDSA Shrine, and the Centennial Tower.

Peralta gives capacity building talk at Laoag IP symposia

��ϲ�ֱ�� ITSO Manager and Executive Assistant for Intellectual Property & Research Assoc. Prof. Michael Jorge Peralta was are source speaker in the seminar series that was part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the
Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center (MMMH&MC) in Batac, Ilocos Norte on February 21, 2018.

The seminar’s objective was to build the capacity of the medical staff in matters pertaining to public service in the medical field. Topics discussed included Medico-legal basic, Rights of Patients, Forensics, Financial Empowerment and Intellectual Property.

Capacity building is one of the objectives of the Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO). The ITSO offers Intellectual Property (IP) awareness campaigns such as basic IP training sessions, patent search, patent drafting, and fundamentals of technology transfer. Ms. Kristine Dianne M. Marders, over-all chair of the organizing committee, spearheaded
the Seminar Series Research.
