RCSSED officials win research recognitions

The Director and Assistant Director of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSED) bagged international and national research prizes, respectively, for their doctoral projects in Australian universities.

RCSSED Director Jeremaiah M. Opiniano (The University of Adelaide) won the 2024 Dissertation Award from the Mixed Methods International Research Association (MMIRA) for his doctoral project titled “Overseas Remittances and Rural Hometown Investing: Towards an Understanding of the Migration-and-Local Development Nexus.”

His PhD project, in May 2021, had already won the John Lewis Medal of Excellence for Outstanding Doctoral Research in Geography, from the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia (RGSSA), where Adelaide belongs.

MMIRA’s dissertation awards, the Association said, “recognize a beginning scholar completing original research whose dissertation has made an outstanding contribution to the field of mixed methods research”. Applicants to the 2024 MMIRA dissertation award must have the PhD thesis or dissertation defended / passed during the period December 1, 2020 to September 30, 2023.

Meanwhile, RCSSED Assistant Director Pia Patricia P. Tenedero (Macquarie University) will receive this year’s Virginia A. Miralao Excellence in Research Award (VAMERA) from the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC).

Tenedero won the award for her book titled Communication that Counts: Language Practice and Ideology in Globalized Accounting that comes from her PhD thesis at Macquarie University. The book was published as part of the Language at Work series by publisher Multilingual Matters, based in Bristol in the United Kingdom.

VAMERA honors former PSSC Executive Director Dr. Virginia Miralao, and the prize comes from a 2012 grant to PSSC by Professor Emerita Dr. Belinda Aquino of the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the US. The award, handed out to a published journal article, book chapter or book, serves as an incentive (i.e., below 45 years old) “to pursue original and meaningful research”.

Tenedero, currently an honorary research fellow at Macquarie’s Department of Linguistics, will receive a unique trophy made by noted visual artist Toym Leon Imao.

Both awardees belong to the Faculty of Arts and Letters‘ Journalism and English programs, respectively.

Drs. Yan Tan (primary) and Dianne Marie Rudd (co-supervisor) advised Opiniano’s project, while Distinguished Professor Ingrid Piller and Dr. Loy Lising acted as primary and co-supervisors, respectively of Tenedero.

The individual citations of the two officials come as RCSSED received the Outstanding Research Institution Award, for Social Sciences and the Humanities, from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) last March.

Lintao of AB, GS elected President of Linguistic Society of the Philippines

Prof. Rachelle B. Lintao, PhD, the Chair of the Department of English and Program Lead of the Graduate School English Language Cluster, has been elected as the President of the Linguistic Society of the Philippines (LSP), the premier linguistics organization of the country.

Lintao has been elected to lead the 55-year old organization from 2024 to 2027. She was Vice President in 2021-2024 and Treasurer from 2018-2021. She is at the helm of the 12-member board of directors who are from varied institutions and organizations in the country and abroad, namely, De La Salle University, Ateneo de Manila University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of the Philippines Diliman, Ateneo de Zamboanga, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, University of Hawaii in Hilo, and Summer Institute of Linguistics.

Lintao is the fourth LSP president from ��ϲ�ֱ��. The former presidents include Asst. Prof. Anna Maria Gloria Ward, Prof. Marilu Madrunio, PhD, and Prof. Alejandro S. Bernardo, PhD who are all from the Department of English. Ward and Madrunio currently sit in the LSP board.

Lintao’s research interests include forensic linguistics. Among her recent publications are “Power, Control, and Resistance in Philippine and American Police Interview Discourse” (co-authored with Ma. Kaela Joselle R. Madrunio) and “Readability and comprehensibility of Malaysian construction contracts” (co-authored with Noushad Ali Naseem Ameer Ali).

Int’l forensic linguistics conference gathers experts on law, language at ��ϲ�ֱ��

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� Department of English, under the Faculty of Arts and Letters, hosted the 16th Biennial Conference of the International Association for Forensic and Legal Linguistics (IAFLL) from July 4 to 6, 2023 at the Grand Ballroom of the Buenaventura G. Paredes, O.P. (BGPOP) Building with the Supreme Court of the Philippines Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo as the keynote speaker.

With the theme “Forensic Linguistics: Strengthening Foundations, Rethinking Paradigms, and Navigating New Horizons”, the conference brought together 134 forensic linguists, lawyers, educators, researchers, practitioners, and language enthusiasts from at least 22 countries around the globe, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Malaysia, Mozambique, Nigeria, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom, the United States, and Uzbekistan.

During the hybrid event, a stellar lineup of speakers and panelists fostered insightful discussions, shared best practices, and explored innovative approaches within the field of forensic and legal linguistics.

In his keynote speech, delivered on his behalf by Associate Justice Justice Hon. Jose Midas Marquez, the Chief Justice Hon. Alexander Gesmundo emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence in areas like author recognition, language and document analysis, and real-time translation technologies to break through language barriers.

“Aside from potentially supercharging undertakings like language and document analysis and speaker and author recognition, of particular interest to those in multilingual jurisdictions such as ours is the development of machine learning for real-time translation tools to help overcome language barriers,” said Chief Justice Gesmundo.

The Chief Justice also highlighted the challenges and issues posed by biases, data privacy, security, and accuracy when using AI systems and stressed the significance of linguists remaining at the forefront of their field in order to address the complex intersections of law, language, and technology.

“Even with the torrent of such tools, we count on linguists such as yourselves to stay at the helm of the field, especially given the issues that are likely to arise when law, language, and technology intersect,” he said.

During the first day of the conference, Prof. Tim Grant, Director of Aston Institute of Forensic Linguistics (AIFL), Aston University in UK, delivered a plenary lecture on the role of explanation in forensic linguistic expert evidence, while the outgoing IAFLL President Dr. Isabel Picornell shared her knowledge and expertise on ethics and professional conduct oversight in forensic linguistic expert evidence.

Meanwhile, the second day of the conference featured the plenary lectures of Prof. Natalie Schilling of Georgetown University in the USA, focusing on enriching understandings of language expertise through work in forensic linguistics and Dr. Richard Powell, Vice President of Japan Association of Law and Language, who stressed on the value of multilingual law and its roles to multilingual human professionals.

The IAFLL incoming President Dr. Jennifer Glougie also delivered a plenary talk on tightening the reins of expert evidence; judicial gatekeeping in the Canadian context during the third and final day of the conference. Meanwhile, Dr. Susanto Saman, founder and president of Indonesian Community for Forensic Linguistics, shared some reflection thoughts from case studies of forensic linguistics in Indonesia.

Prof. Isabel Pefianco-Martin, the Chair of the Department of Educational Leadership and Management of Ateneo de Manila University, moderated a themed panel presentation that explored emerging challenges and innovative solutions within forensic and legal linguistics with Prof. Marilu R. Madrunio of ��ϲ�ֱ��, Atty. Senando Santiago of the University of the Philippines-Diliman and Dr. Laura Smith-Khan of the University of Technology, Sydney in Australia. In addition, Prof. Grant moderated another themed panel discussion diving into ethics and ethical conduct in Forensic linguistics with Dr. Sarah Atkins of Aston University in UK, Prof. Georgina Heydon of RMIT University in Australia and Dr. Isabel Picornell as panelists.

Participants also attended a cultural night where they witnessed captivating performances that showcased Filipino culture from the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Salinggawi Dance Troupe, BA Dauncen, ��ϲ�ֱ�� Conservatory of Music and ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School Ph.D. English Language Studies students. In line with IAFLL’s 30th founding anniversary, the biennial conference organizers also awarded the former IAFLL presidents with plaques of appreciation during the event to recognize their significant contributions to the field of forensic linguistics.

Prof. Marilu R. Madrunio led the organizing team of IAFLL 16 as the Conference Convener with Prof. Rachelle B. Lintao and Dr. Alejandro S. Bernardo as Conference Co-Conveners. The other members of the core committee were: Ms. Zenaida Reyes (San Beda-Alabang), Atty. Selenne Anne Leynes (��ϲ�ֱ��), Dr. Raquel Jimenez (��ϲ�ֱ��), Ms. Ma. Kaela Joselle Madrunio (��ϲ�ֱ��), and Dr. Shielanie Dacumos (University of Rizal System-Binangonan). The members of the organizing committee were composed of the academic staff from the Department of English, English Language Studies students in the undergraduate and graduate levels as well as alumnae of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School affiliated with the University of Rizal System-Binangonan and Colegio San Agustin-Binan.

The next biennial conference of the IAFLL will be held at the University of Western Cape, South Africa in 2025.

The hybrid format allowed both in-person and virtual attendees to actively engage in the sessions, ensuring a truly global and inclusive event.

A life of great service

In his homily, fr. Tiong, on the occasion of the Feast of St. James the Apostle, thanked the retirees for their many years of service, “one of the central themes of the day’s Gospel.” “This [gratitude] is really something that comes from the heart of the University…because…you have graced the University by your presence, by your very person,” fr. Tiong said in his homily.

During the testimonial, Prof. Peralta lauded the retirees for molding their students’ character and empowering them to contribute positive changes in the world through education. “As you step into the next chapter of your lives in retirement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for selflessly dedicating yourselves to molding young minds, motivating discouraged hearts, and uplifting dampened spirits that allowed Thomasian students, alumni, and university staff reach what they are today,” Peralta said.

In his message, fr. Ang stated that seasoned teachers have fulfilled their roles when students finally develop their own moral compass to guide them in life and extend their learnings beyond the classroom, as well as getting remembered for acknowledging and treating them well. “They will remember how well you treated them, how they felt valued and cared for, and how you recognized their unique gifts and talents,” fr. Ang said.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Josefin de Alban, Jr. delivered his acceptance speech on behalf of the retirees, emphasizing that the University they served for years will always be their home. “Retiring faculty members shall never leave ��ϲ�ֱ��. We shall never forget,” de Alban said. “��ϲ�ֱ�� is our home and we always wanted to be in this beloved Pontifical University whenever we are away from her,” he added.

RCSSED pitches research-based policy recommendations to legislators in first policy expo

Academic researchers from the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Research Center for Social Sciences and Education presented data-based policy recommendations to lawmakers and officials of Congress in its first Policy Expo held on March 3 and 7, 2023, as part of the Research Fortnight. Listening to the researchers were Cong. Ralph Wendel P. Tulfo (Quezon City – District 2), Prof. Erwin V. Lara (Congress Secretariat), Dr. Romulo Emmanuel M. Miral (Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department), and Cong. Romeo S. Momo, Sr. (Surigao del Sur – District 1).

With the intent to “balance the scholarly and policy dimensions of social science research” and in an attempt to address “Philippine socio-economic and education issues,” the RCSSED, specifically its newly minted Research Utilization Unit, provided the platform for researchers to use their study’s recommendations as bases for policy. Among the possibilities are inclusion as bases for bills and ordinances, among others.

The RCSSED’s Research Utilization Unit, headed by Rey, anchors itself on three pillars: life and dignity (buhay at dangal); human rights (karapatang pantao); and democracy (demokrasya). According to RCSSED Director Jeremaiah Opiniano, the Center aims to have more regular engagements with policy makers in the future and expressed openness to having the researchers work on topics/issues of interest to the local legislators and officials.

Mirasol of English, RCSSED is new President of Reading Association of the Philippines

Assoc. Prof. Rosalyn G. Mirasol, PhD of the Department of English was elected as the new president of the Reading Association of the Philippines for a term spanning the years 2022-2023 after the election held during the National Demofest held in November 24-25, 2023, at Sorsogon Provincial Stadium. The said Demofest was attended by more than 750 teachers all over the country.

The Reading Association of the Philippines, a national affiliate of the International Literacy Association (ILA) based in Delaware, Unites States of America, is a professional association of reading educators, teachers, advocates, and parents. Its mission is to improve all aspects of the national reading programs and teaching pedagogy through teacher-training, upskilling, and research. Dr. Mirasol was the country representative to the International Development in Asia Committee of ILA.

Mirasol and Dr. Marie Grace Reoperez, RAP Secretary, 2021-2022, were the lead persons in the project proposal “Kape, Basa, Pag-asa.” This project has won a grant funding from the ILA Global Committee. Mirasol is also an academic researcher at the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education.

Tarrayo of English, RCSSED to receive research excellence award from APCoRE

Assoc. Prof. Veronico N. Tarrayo, PhD of the Department of English is set to receive the 2022 Dr. Matthew A. Eichler Memorial Fellowship Award for Excellence in Research, following the deliberations of the Asia-Pacific Consortium of Researchers and Educators, Inc. The award will be conferred virtually on December 14, 2022, at the closing of APCoRE’s 2022 virtual conference.

Awardees will receive a trophy, citation for accomplishments, a lifetime honorary membership in APCoRE, and research grants (subject to the approval of submitted proposals). The award was named after the Founding Chairman of APCoRE and recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of individuals in the areas of Education and Research.

Tarrayo, an academic researcher of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education, publishes studies mainly on English language teaching and has also authored works on stylistics and gender-related issues. The full list of his works can be viewed on his .

Medicine, English language and literature emerge as ��ϲ�ֱ��’s top programs in latest QS Subject Rankings

The University’s Doctor of Medicine and programs on English Language and Literature emerged as the top program offerings as ranked by Quacquarelli-Symonds, which released its 2022 Subject Rankings earlier this month.

For Medicine, the University ranked in the 651-670 range. The University received ratings for the H-index citations and citations per paper, and was likewise rated for Employer Reputation and Academic Reputation.

The University programs of English Language and Literature were ranked 301-320 in the world. The University received ratings for its Employer Reputation, Academic Reputation, and research efforts as indicated by citations per paper.

The QS World Subject Rankings 2022 gathered 14.7 million unique research papers and rated 1,543 institutions from 161 locations. The rankings assessed a total of 51 subject areas.

Two Arts and Letters programs sign MOU with UB-SUNY

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� Faculty of Arts and Letters signed an international memorandum of understanding with the University of Buffalo (UB) of the State University of New York (SUNY) for the purpose of “developing academic and educational cooperation on the basis of equality and reciprocity and to promote relations and mutual understanding between both universities”.

Dr. Sampson Lee Blair of UB-SUNY, a family sociologist who specializes in child and adolescent development, gender, and ethnicity, will teach a professional elective on the Sociology of Family to fourth year BA Sociology students under the Department of Sociology.

The course is intended to examine family research and Sociology of the Filipino family relative to contemporary social issues such as changing age at marriage, poverty and family dynamics, child employment, intergenerational families, and the role of religion within family, among others.

At the Department of English, a collaboration with the UB-SUNY is underway for the graduates of the English Language Studies program to pursue their education-based master’s degree in the institution at a discounted rate.

Other opportunities for international projects, research, and teaching assistantship of the students under the BA Sociology program, and in other programs are also being explored in the partnership.

Mirasol, Topacio report disconnect in urban parents’ beliefs and practices in children’s reading development

Assoc. Prof. Rosalyn G. Mirasol, PhD and Asst. Prof. Katrina Ninfa M. Topacio, MA, faculty researchers of the Department of English, recently published a study in Reading Psychology, where they reported the disconnect between urban parents’ beliefs and practices in children’s reading development.

In the study entitled “Reading perceptions, needs, and practices among parents of an urban poor community in the Philippines,” Mirasol and Topacio surveyed 274 parents of K-1 pupils in an urban poor community in Manila, Philippines.

While the parents “believed that reading is important for their children’s social development, and that they are aware that reading starts at home. However, their needs and practices contradicted their perceptions because reading seemed to be not their priority probably due to the limited access and budget for reading materials.”

The researchers acknowledged the challenge this posed to those in-charge of education in the community, including the teachers, who share in the task of developing literacy.
