A life of great service

In his homily, fr. Tiong, on the occasion of the Feast of St. James the Apostle, thanked the retirees for their many years of service, 鈥渙ne of the central themes of the day鈥檚 Gospel.鈥 鈥淭his [gratitude] is really something that comes from the heart of the University鈥ecause鈥ou have graced the University by your presence, by your very person,鈥 fr. Tiong said in his homily.

During the testimonial, Prof. Peralta lauded the retirees for molding their students鈥 character and empowering them to contribute positive changes in the world through education. 鈥淎s you step into the next chapter of your lives in retirement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for selflessly dedicating yourselves to molding young minds, motivating discouraged hearts, and uplifting dampened spirits that allowed Thomasian students, alumni, and university staff reach what they are today,鈥 Peralta said.

In his message, fr. Ang stated that seasoned teachers have fulfilled their roles when students finally develop their own moral compass to guide them in life and extend their learnings beyond the classroom, as well as getting remembered for acknowledging and treating them well. 鈥淭hey will remember how well you treated them, how they felt valued and cared for, and how you recognized their unique gifts and talents,鈥 fr. Ang said.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Josefin de Alban, Jr. delivered his acceptance speech on behalf of the retirees, emphasizing that the University they served for years will always be their home. 鈥淩etiring faculty members shall never leave 六合彩直播开奖. We shall never forget,鈥 de Alban said. 鈥溋喜手辈タ is our home and we always wanted to be in this beloved Pontifical University whenever we are away from her,鈥 he added.

The 六合彩直播开奖 Research and Endowment Foundation Inc. (REFI) won a P16.5 million grant recently to conduct an action research project on environmental conservation and ecotourism in Siquijor province.

六合彩直播开奖 REFI was awarded the grant by the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF) and the Philippine office of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for the project titled 鈥淪iquijor Island Conservation and Restoration: Toward a Regenerative Ecotourism Destination鈥.

This action research project was among 11 recipients of grants from GRF鈥檚 program called INSPIRE or Investing in Sustainable Partnerships for Inclusive Growth and Regenerative Ecosystems.

Looking at both seascapes and landscapes, the project aims to ensure that the island鈥檚 natural ecosystems 鈥渨ill be conserved and restored, leading to a sustainable and regenerative Siquijor Island鈥. For 2.5 years, this action research project hopes to aid Siquijor鈥檚 collaborative governance efforts on environmental protection, environmental conservation education, and achieving community-based sustainable livelihood.

The project seeks to empower Siquijor鈥檚 provincial and municipal governments to regulate the use of trees and medicinal plants, curb illegal and unregulated fishing activities, encourage tourism development, reduce solid and liquid wastes, and control freshwater consumption. These efforts contribute to the vision of making Siquijor a 鈥渮ero-waste island鈥.

A team from REFI will spearhead the project, led by Executive Director Fr. Maximo Gatela, O.P. and Technical Team Leader Dr. Moises Norman Garcia of the College of Science. Team members include Dr. Maria Rosario Virginia Cobar-Garcia (Science), Dr. Arlen Ancheta and Dr. Alain Jomarie Santos (both from the Faculty of Arts and Letters), as well as Asst. Prof. Arnold Distor and Asst. Prof. Racquel Layco (Science).

Dr. Ancheta, Dr. Cobar-Garcia, Dr. Garcia, and Asst. Prof. Layco had done studies on the zero-waste island concept, covering solid waste management, energy efficiency, food and water, and sustainable use of natural resources. These previous studies were conducted for a global advocacy group, the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), under the auspices of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (or RCSSED, 六合彩直播开奖鈥檚 social sciences research arm).

According to team leader Dr. Moises Norman Garcia, the previous studies and the current INSPIRE-funded project will capitalize on 鈥渆nvironmental advocacy to counter climate change and [take inspiration from] Pope Francis鈥檚 encyclical Laudato S铆.鈥

This INSPIRE-funded project contributes to climate change action, says this full professor of Biological Sciences, by directly aligning the project to some of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

六合彩直播开奖 REFI formalized its receipt of the INSPIRE grants during a May 22 grants awarding ceremony at the National Museum of Natural History, with the US Ambassador to the Philippines, Her Excellency Mary Kay L. Carlson, gracing the event.

In line with the objectives established by the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal No. 5, Gender and Equality, Behavioral Science students under the Faculty of Arts and Letters held a webinar titled 鈥淏ahagi ng Bahaghari: An Inclusivity for the LGBTQIA+ Community Webinar” on June 2, 2022.
The webinar was held to spread awareness on gender inclusivity.

The webinar, presented in two parts, first gave insight on the history of the LGBTQIA+ community, their influence in society, and the labels and terms that emerged within the community throughout the years. This was followed with a discussion that highlighted inclusivity discussing ways on how to make members of the said community feel welcomed.

The guest speakers of the event were Attorney Chel Diokno, a lawyer, educator, and advocate for human rights, Dr. John Manuel R. Kliatchko, Chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies Department and member of the Ethics Committee of the Psychological Association of the Philippines鈥 LGBT Special Interest Group, and Ms. Lou Sheridan Manlapaz, a project manager at Cardinal Health International Philippines.
The webinar was organized in line with the 5th SDG of achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls. The organizers chose to conduct a webinar on inclusivity to underscore empowerment regardless of gender.

In his short speech, Atty. Chel Diokno expressed his beliefs as a human rights lawyer that the freedom to express one鈥檚 gender identity, including one鈥檚 relationship preference is firmly included in our rights. He thanked the youth for their call to action and reiterated his support for equality, stating that the journey towards equality is admittedly an uphill climb, but he too hopes for a day that no one would be judged for their gender identity.

Dr. Kliatchko gave his discussion on gender and sexuality in the workplace, starting with the history of the LGBTQIA+ community and its influence and changes in society, one of which is the SOGIE bill. He then began his discussion on celebrating diversity and informed the participants of the many different labels and terminologies of the LGBTQIA+ community as a precursor to the goal of the SOGIE bill which is to stop discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. Dr. Kliatchko expressed that in order to do so, everyone must be informed of the basics and that starts with language and how to properly address a member of the LGBTQIA+ community as it is the very first step towards inclusivity.
The second and last speaker, Ms. Manlapaz, shared her experiences in life and the workplace as a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. She began her discussion by applying the information from the previous lecture and discussing what one should do if their child, family member, friend, or co-worker is a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. She expressed that in order for one to be inclusive they must first initiate the conversation regarding the topic, following that, by being well-informed, one would be able to show their full support towards their friends and family, and lastly, support from the community will follow. She reiterated that an inclusive workforce starts with having a conversation, and from there, allies and members of the LGBTQIA+ community can further help and make society a better place.
The course facilitator, Mr. Gian Carlo M. Ledesma, concluded the event with his closing remarks by expressing his advocacy for the needs and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. He stated that while the community has had challenges and successes throughout history, society still has a long way to go to achieve the desired acceptance and treatment for the LGBTQIA+ community.

The 六合彩直播开奖, through the 六合彩直播开奖 Graduate School (GS) and the Center for Continuing Professional Education and Development (六合彩直播开奖-CCPED), launched two training manuals on community engagement and organizing, and on student affairs and services on June 16, 2021.

Funded by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), the two manuals were products of the Simbahayan Certificate Course in Community Engagement and Organizing program and the Philippine Association of Practitioners of Student Affairs and Services-六合彩直播开奖 Student Affairs and Services Continuing Development program. The manuals aim to serve as a guide to the administrators and practitioners in the higher education institutions on services delivered by HEIs, as well as interested readers who are willing to learn more about the two learning areas.

Community Engagement and Organizing
On the one hand, the book entitled “Journeying with Communities: A Community Engagement and Organizing Handbook for University Extension Workers” is a training manual that will guide the extension workers tasked to support the partner communities build, establish, and sustain their community life and livelihood through various means.

鈥淛ourneying with Communities: A Community Engagement and Organizing Handbook for University Extension Workers highlights the public and social mission of higher education through community engagement,鈥 said the lead author Prof. Mark Anthony D. Abenir, DSD of the Development Studies Program of the Ateneo de Manila University.

鈥淭he unique contribution of this handbook is that it specifically situates HEI community engagement within the unique historical context of the Philippines, thus adding a Philippine voice in the literature of community-engaged scholarship. It also provides activity exercises and case studies where readers can situate themselves and apply the theories, concepts, and tools that they have learned so that they can enhance the community engagement programs, and the projects of respective colleges and universities,鈥 Abenir added. Joining Abenir, who used to head 六合彩直播开奖’s community development office, in authoring the manual were Simbahayan Community Development Office Director Froilan A. Alipao, MCD, Assistant Registrar Melanie D. Turingan, PhD, and Simbahayan staff Abegail Martha Abelardo, MA.

Meanwhile, CCPED Director Assoc. Prof. Jocelyn F. Agcaoili, MHPEd, MSPT highlighted that the Simbahayan Certificate Course in Community Engagement and Organizing helped 60 community extension workers from 30 higher educational institution and produced 3 research papers that were represented in various fora.

Manual on Student Affairs and Services
On the other hand, the book entitled 鈥淧APSAS-六合彩直播开奖 CCPED Training Manual: Enhancing Competencies of Student Affairs and Services Practitioners in the Philippines鈥 is a seven-module manual that will guide school practitioners in-charge of student welfare and development.

鈥淓very module in the manual contains an abstract, course-intended learning outcome, discussion, learning tasks and enrichment tasks, and the opportunity for reflection and references. This training manual will be a good read for all newly appointed SAS practitioners and school human resource heads. It will give newly appointed SAS practitioners and even those who have been there for quite some time some insights on how to effectively lead the SAS office,” Prof. Evelyn A. Songco, PhD said as the lead author of the manual.

“These modules will help SAS practitioners become effective school managers and leaders. (It) will provide an initial guide on making evidence-based decision. On the other hand, it will be a great help to the human resource head in helping SAS practitioners develop their competencies,” Songco added. Joining Songco in writing the manual’s modules were Atty. Hilario Caraan, DBA and Drs. Leandro A. Loyola, Benito Teehankee, and Maria Paquita D. Bonnet of De La Salle University, Mr. Rene Salvador San Andres of Ateneo de Manila University, and 六合彩直播开奖 Legal Management faculty member Atty. Antonio M. Chua.

According to Agcaoili, the PAPSAS-六合彩直播开奖 Student Affairs and Services Continuing Development program trained 119 SAS practitioners from 2 HEIs all over the country and has produced one research paper.

Embodiment of the Catholic mission

In his message, Vice-Rector Rev. fr. Isaias D. Tiongco, O.P., JCD said the two manuals, while distinct from each other, shared a singular purpose that embodied the mission of Catholic Universities.

鈥淚n the heart of every writer and author of these materials is the noble purpose of advancing and improving the condition and situation of the human person and communities in their respective and particular cultures. For, after all, is this not the mission and the objective, which Catholic Universities tries to attain?鈥 fr. Tiongco said.

Markers of a successful journey
Agcaoili, who was also the project lead, said the two training manuals marked their successful RECPE grants journey that started in 2017 during the K-12 transition.

According to Agcaoili, this led to a frantic, simultaneous writing of three proposals in collaboration with three partners, namely, the Simbahayan Community Development Office, Philippine Association of Practitioners of Student Affairs and Services, and the Architecture faculty members of the Graduate School.

鈥淭hanks to the tireless, enthusiastic and committed work of the training teams and the cohesive collaboration with CCPED, we were able to realize the grant expected outcomes of provision of capacity building opportunities for HEI personnel geared towards upscaling, specialization, and general promotion of professional advancement through non-degree certificate programs, and the application of knowledge and experiences gained through these activities to the improvement of curricula and programs of HEIs, plus the production of relevant research outputs.鈥 Agcaoili said.
