In various paper presentations, Filipino thought was expounded on by Thomasian philosophers who attended the August 1鈥8, 2024 25th World Congress of Philosophy (WCP), which was held at Sapienza University of Rome. Philosophy Beyond Boundaries was the theme of the 25th WCP, which attracted researchers worldwide to discuss it as a global platform for philosophical conversation. Several academics from the 六合彩直播开奖 (六合彩直播开奖) in the Philippines were among the eminent attendees, and contributed to the inclusive and diverse discourse of the Congress.

Complying with the Congress’s pledge to diversity, researchers from 六合彩直播开奖 gave talks and took part in panels that broadened the discussion on Filipino philosophy and its role in international discourse. Professor Jove Jim S. Aguas of the Department of Philosophy, Graduate School, and Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics was a major contributor to the Congress. In addition to moderating and chairing the PAP Society Session titled “Filipino Philosophy in Dialogue: Expanding the Conversation,” Aguas contributed to the Center for Research in Values and Philosophy (CRVP) Round Table Discussion on National Values by presenting a paper titled “The Ambiguity of the Filipino Sense of Nationalism and Filipino Identity.”

In the Contributed Paper Sessions, Thomasian scholars presented their respective papers:

鈼徛 聽聽聽 Prof. Fleurdeliz R. Altez-Albela, PhD (Department of Philosophy, Graduate School, and Center for Theology, Religious Studies, and Ethics) – “What Is Levinasian in Sustainability?: Sustainability in the Economy of Being Through Levinas鈥 Third”

鈼      Junior Teacher Blaise D. Ringor, PhD (Senior High School and Ecclesiastical Faculties) – “Education, Christian Values, and the Voiding of Reason: John Henry Newman鈥檚 Personalist Education”

鈼      Mr. Christian U. Solis, MA (Senior High School and Graduate School) – “Towards Understanding Fidelity in Marriage and Family: Paul Ricoeur on Man鈥檚 Capacity to Promise”

鈼      Mr. Charles Aldrin A. Delgado (Graduate School) – “Christianity as Discomfort: Kierkegaard鈥檚 Philosophy of Religion”

鈼      Inst. Ivan Efreaim A. Gozum, MA (Institute of Religion and Graduate School) – “Understanding Filipino Close Family Ties Through Gabriel Marcel鈥檚 Mystery of the Family”

Aguas also presented the paper entitled “The Relevance of the Metaphysics and the Notions of Being and Analogy of St. Thomas.”

These talks demonstrated the breadth and depth of philosophical study at 六合彩直播开奖 and the contributions made by Filipino academics to international philosophical debates. Additionally, through one-on-one interactions, the Congress gave Filipino scholars a rare chance to fortify relationships and build mutual trust.

The Congress emphasized Rome’s long-standing position as a crossroads of civilizations, and it began with a ceremony at the ancient Baths of Caracalla. Prof. Luca Maria Scarantino, President of FISP, and Prof. Antonella Polimeni, Rector of Sapienza University, both emphasized the merging of humanistic and scientific cultures in philosophical conversations, reinforcing this subject of interconnection in their introductory statements.

Scholars addressed pressing ethical, social, cultural, political, and spiritual concerns all week long. Topics covered included the ethics of artificial intelligence, with discussions on the implications of AI on human decision-making and the ethical responsibilities of AI developers, and the place of spirituality in secular cultures, with debates on the role of spirituality in a modern, secular society. The Congress featured round table discussions, invited sessions, symposia, contributed paper sessions, endowed lectures, plenary sessions, student sessions, and the FISP General Assembly. The goal of these talks was to question conventional wisdom in philosophy by tackling issues of sustainability, gender and cultural diversity, inequality, and other modern world concerns.

Every five years, the WCP is arranged by the Federation Internationale des Soci茅t茅s de Philosophie (FISP) or the International Federation of Philosophical Societies. The WCP is a major conference that brings together philosophers, educators, students, and philosophy aficionados worldwide for a week-long discussion of a certain issue.

Pope Francis released the Apostolic Exhortation Laudate Deum on October 4, 2023 in order to tackle the climate crisis. The exhortation is intended as a follow-up document to Laudato Si鈥, published eight years earlier, because 鈥 as Pope Francis observed 鈥 鈥渨ith the passage of time鈥 our responses have not been adequate, while the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point鈥 (LD, 2). Such urgency invites us to reinforce the advocacy and to make this agenda central to our institutional commitments and activities.

The Religious Educators鈥 Association of the Philippines (REAP) and the 六合彩直播开奖, through its Center for Theology, Religious Studies and Ethics (六合彩直播开奖-CTRSE), and the Institute of Religion (六合彩直播开奖-IR), are holding a Symposium on 鈥淭he Significance of Laudate Deum in the Context of South and Southeast Asia Today.鈥 The event will be done Online via Zoom on the morning of February 29, 2024 (Thursday), 9:00 AM to 12:00 noon. It aims to provide a forum that will discuss the relevance and embodiment of Laudate Deum in South and Southeast Asia.

Prof. Antonio Levy Ingles, Jr. of the Philosophy and Theology Department of the College of St. Benilde, Manila, and Fr. Joby Tharamangalam, O.P., Prior of St. Thomas Priory in Goa, India, will deliver the main lectures. Mr. Chot Velasquez, President of Aksyon Kalikasan Organization, and Ms. Patricia Joy Mobilla of 六合彩直播开奖-IR will respond to the first and second lectures respectively.

The event is also offered as an activity of the Center for Dialogue with Cultures and Religions in Asia (CDCRA) of 六合彩直播开奖-CTRSE, hence the participation of Fr. Joby Tharamangalam, OP of the Dominican Province of India. The discussion aims to look into how Pope Francis鈥 agenda for integral ecology is received and has shaped the cultures of South and Southeast Asia, particularly India and the Philippines.

Dominican Students and members of the Dominican Family in the Asia-Pacific Region, along with Theology professors and students, religious education instructors, environment advocates, and other interested parties, are invited to participate in the discussion.

Philippiniana Sacra, the official publication of the 六合彩直播开奖 Ecclesiastical Faculties, releases its September-December 2023 issue via its open access website. The journal is indexed by Web of Science.

The articles published in the September – December 2023 issue are the following:

  1. by Jeffrey Segovia tackles the understanding linked to the Valley of Hinnom as an allusion to the concept and image of eternal damnation, as well as uncovering the mystery of the silver scrolls of Ketef Hinnom, which is claimed to be one of the most important Biblical discoveries of antiquity.
  2. by Leo-Martin Angelo Ruiz Ocampo investigates the experience of the School of Salamanca, how its core dynamic termed as the 鈥淪alamanca Process鈥 embodies the charism of the Dominican Order, and the ongoing attempt to recover it as a model for the life and mission of Dominicans today as expressed in official documents of the Order.
  3. by Jos茅 Eugenio Borao Mateo is grounded on Spanish and Dutch documentary sources to provide a better understanding of the archaeological findings in the church, thus offering new perspectives on the archaeological conclusions by highlighting the distinction between two crucial elements: the convent and the church. In other words, the paper proposes the possibility that the final church, constructed with stone, may have remained unfinished, adding complication to the interpretation of the discovered cemetery in the same site.
  4. by Allan A. Basas interrogates the presence of the notion of social responsibility in human being’s experiences, in recognition of the inviolability of the Other. Basas likewise urges the readers in a thematic discussion in the cusp of Levinas鈥 notion of social responsibility and Filipino sociality to show that responsibility is a universal value with many faces.
  5. by Alexandre Coello de la Rosa tackles the figure of Don Diego V谩zquez de Mercado, the first secular archbishop of Manila, and brings the other aspects of his tenure, such as his relations with the cathedral chapter and his tense relations with the governor of the Philippines, Don Juan de Silva y Enr铆quez (1609-1616).
  6. by Jorge Mojarro
  7. by Joselito B. Zulueta revisits the launch of the two volumes of 鈥淒oing Philosophy in the Philippines: The Thomasian Collection鈥, culled from the pages of UNITAS journal. The two-volume book was edited by 六合彩直播开奖 Professor Emeritus Alfredo P. Co and published by the 六合彩直播开奖 Publishing House.
  8. by Jose Adriand Emmanuel L. Layug talks about George Weigle’s service to the church and to all men of goodwill in search for the true meaning of Vatican II in his work “To Sanctify the World The Vital Legacy of Vatican II”.
  9. by Melanie D. Turingan talks about the virtues exhibited by St. Joseph the Worker as God’s dutiful stalwart that provided Jesus a home together with the Virgin Mary, as well as how reader would take inspiration from his virtues.
  10. by Blaise D. Ringor explored how Seifert synthesized the philosophies of thinkers like Dietrich von Hildebrand and Josef Pieper with the thoughts of Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II, concurrently offering a critical response to the work of scholars such as Josef Fuchs, Jonathan Harrison, and Franz B枚ckle. This allows the reader to engage and delve on the primary texts written by Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II.

During the pandemic, there was a documented surge in suicide cases in the Philippines. A newly published paper by Thomasian academic staff Inst. Ivan Efreaim A. Gozum, MA and Asst. Prof. Joselito G. Gutierrez, PhD of the Institute of Religion documents how the Catholic Church executed a pastoral response to address the issue.

The study titled “A Proposed Pastoral Approach to Address the Surge in Suicide Cases in the Philippines During the COVID鈥19 Pandemic” was recently published in the Journal of Religion and Health, a Quartile 1 Scopus-indexed journal under Springer.

In their paper, Gozum and Gutierrez delve into the data and statistics related to the rise in suicide cases at the peak of the pandemic. While some cases were known before the pandemic, findings suggest that the pandemic played a role in increasing these cases and introducing additional stressors that adversely impacted mental health. These stressors included issues such as domestic conflicts, financial loss, anxiety, depression, and preexisting mental health conditions, all of which contributed to the spike in suicide rates.

Against this backdrop, the authors emphasized the Church’s commitment to uphold the sanctity of life amidst the health crisis. The Church addresses various social concerns related to suicide and the devaluation of individuals, while striving to uphold the inherent dignity of every person and adapting to address emerging challenges, including mental health issues. Given the limited access to basic healthcare in the Philippines, Gozum and Gutierrez advocate for the Church and other sectors to develop suitable programs to aid those affected by the pandemic. To this end, they proposed a pastoral program encompassing prevention, intervention, and postvention strategies.

The pastoral program draws inspiration from the Pastoral Letter on Suicide authored by Thomasian Cardinal, Jose Advincula, which underscores the importance of a “culture of presence” within the community. The program encourages collaboration between Church leaders and lay professionals to provide support to individuals involved in suicide-related cases. It envisions the Church offering support groups and counseling services to create a secure environment for sharing experiences and healing, especially for those who have attempted suicide or have family members affected by suicide. Emergency response protocols, including alerting emergency services and ensuring the individual’s safety, are deemed essential, requiring effective cooperation between the Church and mental health experts. Crisis-affected individuals may also benefit from parish prayer groups and spiritual guidance to foster a sense of belonging and support within the community.

This article contributes significantly to the expanding body of literature on mental health studies by helping bridging the gap between faith and science. It underscores the vital role the Church can play in addressing the global concern of mental health.

Tiong, on the occasion of the Feast of St. James the Apostle, thanked the retirees for their many years of service, 鈥渙ne of the central themes of the day鈥檚 Gospel.鈥 鈥淭his [gratitude] is really something that comes from the heart of the University鈥ecause鈥ou have graced the University by your presence, by your very person,鈥 fr. Tiong said in his homily.

During the testimonial, Prof. Peralta lauded the retirees for molding their students鈥 character and empowering them to contribute positive changes in the world through education. 鈥淎s you step into the next chapter of your lives in retirement, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of you for selflessly dedicating yourselves to molding young minds, motivating discouraged hearts, and uplifting dampened spirits that allowed Thomasian students, alumni, and university staff reach what they are today,鈥 Peralta said.

In his message, fr. Ang stated that seasoned teachers have fulfilled their roles when students finally develop their own moral compass to guide them in life and extend their learnings beyond the classroom, as well as getting remembered for acknowledging and treating them well. 鈥淭hey will remember how well you treated them, how they felt valued and cared for, and how you recognized their unique gifts and talents,鈥 fr. Ang said.

Meanwhile, Assoc. Prof. Josefin de Alban, Jr. delivered his acceptance speech on behalf of the retirees, emphasizing that the University they served for years will always be their home. 鈥淩etiring faculty members shall never leave 六合彩直播开奖. Academic researchers from the 六合彩直播开奖 Research Center for Social Sciences and Education presented data-based policy recommendations to lawmakers and officials of Congress in its first Policy Expo held on March 3 and 7, 2023, as part of the Research Fortnight. Listening to the researchers were Cong. Ralph Wendel P. Tulfo (Quezon City – District 2), Prof. Erwin V. Lara (Congress Secretariat), Dr. Romulo Emmanuel M. Miral (Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department), and Cong. Romeo S. Momo, Sr. (Surigao del Sur – District 1).

With the intent to 鈥渂alance the scholarly and policy dimensions of social science research鈥 and in an attempt to address 鈥淧hilippine socio-economic and education issues,鈥 the RCSSED, specifically its newly minted Research Utilization Unit, provided the platform for researchers to use their study鈥檚 recommendations as bases for policy. Among the possibilities are inclusion as bases for bills and ordinances, among others.

The presenters were the following: Sr. Teacher Philippe Jose S. Hernandez (Social Health Studies); Prof. Moises Norman Z. Garcia, PhD (Sustainability Studies); Assoc. Prof. Ronaldo R. Cabauatan, PhD (Business Studies); Prof. Noel G. Asiones, PhD (Church and Society); Asst. Prof. Carol Geraldine C. Pablo, MSc (Social Health Studies); Asst. Prof. Frederick I. Rey, PhD (Politics and Public Policy); Prof. Rachelle B. Lintao, PhD (Language Studies); Asst. Prof. Jeremaiah M. Opiniano, PhD (Community-Engaged Studies); Asst. Prof. Joreen T. Rocamora, PhD (former academic researcher and incumbent Office of Public Affairs Director); Prof. Arlen A. Ancheta, PhD (Sustainability Studies); and Prof. Evelyn A. Songco, PhD (Education and Leadership).

The RCSSED鈥檚 Research Utilization Unit, headed by Rey, anchors itself on three pillars: life and dignity (buhay at dangal); human rights (karapatang pantao); and democracy (demokrasya). According to RCSSED Director Jeremaiah Opiniano, the Center aims to have more regular engagements with policy makers in the future and expressed openness to having the researchers work on topics/issues of interest to the local legislators and officials.
