Coronel, O.P., E.H.L. while the Professorial Medal was awarded to Arriola by the Father Rector, assisted by Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, Prof. Cheryl R. Peralta, DrPH.

Professorial Chair Lecture

In her lecture titled “The Prospects of Memory Studies in the Philippines,” Arriola delved into the role of media in collective memory work.

In this context, the term 鈥榤emory studies鈥 is not solely under psychology, but a multidisciplinary field that combines intellectual strands from sociology, anthropology, political science, history, communication, journalism, literature, and cultural studies, among others. 鈥楥ollective memory鈥 does not refer to how one person鈥檚 mind stores thoughts, but rather it is the shared pool of recollections or knowledge of a social group that they shape, share, and communicate together.

Cultural memory, which is rooted in fateful past events and thrives through memory sites, relics, works of architecture that give physical evidence of what happened, can shape a common identity among a group of people that spans generations.  Arriola gave the example of the University鈥檚 Sampaloc campus, and primarily the Main Building, being used as an Internment Camp from 1942 to 1945. Even today, the structure is functional and recognized as a National Cultural Treasure.

Arriola illustrated the concept of memory itself by sharing, 鈥淚n 2021, the pandemic continued to pose challenges in all domains of life. That it will continue to haunt us in the years to come has almost become a certainty. As it unfolds, we are already forming a memory of it. The moment is so perilous that we know it will leave behind a trace. It was, is, and will be a pivotal moment to remember鈥an event in the past] becomes a pivotal memory because it assumes contemporary resonance or 鈥榤eaning in the present.鈥欌

Memory is the synthesis of our understanding of the past. For example, the 鈥渕other of all commemorations鈥 is the Eucharistic Celebration, a living memory of the Last Supper where the sacrifice of the Body and Blood of Christ and the consequent redemption of mankind from sin unify the faithful.

With its two-fold moral roles, epistemological (inform people of the needed information about the past) and normative (inform people of the obligations acquired in the past that should guide present behavior), memory  studies hold an important role in forming societal beliefs that influence the present.

The Holocaust Memorials, memoirs of those who suffered through it like Anne Frank, photographs, footage, films, and other plurimedial materials bear the narrative of the systematic genocide of the Jews. This is epistemological since it informs present and future generations of the atrocities committed under the Third Reich. But for the normative function, these remnants serve as a reminder for the world of a moral responsibility to actively resist such malignity and to value human lives.

鈥淢emory, therefore, has its moral imperative: We are duty-bound to remember the past, because [as Paul Ricoeur said], 鈥榯he moral priority belongs to the victims,鈥欌 emphasized Arriola as she connected it to the Martial Law era in the Philippine context.

鈥淭his moral priority applies to the Martial Law years because it was the victims鈥 voices and freedom that were curtailed by repressive erasure, a systematic type of forgetting imposed by the regime. Of late, we have heard 鈥榝orgetting鈥 in connection with the Martial Law years. There have been efforts made to revise history and to deny that the Martial Law era happened,鈥 Arriola explained.

鈥淭his only shows that memory work can be highly political and so is forgetting; These are about contested memories,鈥 said Dr. Arriola, recommending that people must 鈥淐ontinue telling the story. Even those who did not witness the actual event are obligated to uphold truth and demand remembering.鈥

The 鈥榝orgetting鈥 in recent years is likely due to a breakdown of communicative memory among the generations, exacerbated by the rapid shift from books and film to the non-linearity of digital media consumption and parents leaving the country and their children to work abroad, among other factors.

As a solution, remediation can be attempted, recommended Dr. Arriola, adding that media can be a potent bearer of cultural memory through life-writings or recollections, or film, which recirculates the memory for another time or context, among other avenues.

鈥淭he study of memory is also the study of the folly of forgetting. When we find ourselves pointing at some excesses of power, it becomes an exercise of the ethics of remembering and the value of witnessing to it. The early Christians took to witnessing to remind themselves of Christ鈥檚 promise. The same can be said of today. We can be history鈥檚 new witnesses鈥 Let us do ourselves a favor; Let us remember,鈥 Arriola concluded.

A well-known researcher and author, Arriola was a recipient of the 2021 Outstanding Book Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) for her book 鈥Pelikulang Komiks: Toward a Theory of Filipino Film Adaptation鈥 and the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) 2019 Achievement Award in the Humanities. Another work, 鈥淧ostmodern Filming of Literature: Sources, Contexts and Adaptations,鈥 secured the National Book Award in Film/Film Criticism in 2007.

Having served the University in various capacities for almost three decades, Arriola is currently a professor of Literature and Communication at the 六合彩直播开奖 Faculty of Arts and Letters and the 六合彩直播开奖 Graduate School; a research fellow at the 六合彩直播开奖 Center for Theology, Religious Studies and Ethics; a resident fellow of the 六合彩直播开奖 Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies; and the associate editor of the UNITAS Journal, the oldest extant academic journal in the Philippines.

Prior to these posts, she was most recently the Founding Director of the Director of the Research Center for Culture, Arts and Humanities. Arriola has also held the positions of Founding Chair of the Department of Literature, Director of the Centre for Intercultural Studies, Chair of the Department of Communication and Media Studies, and Assistant to the Director for Faculty Development of the 六合彩直播开奖 Educational Technology Center.

A graduate of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, where she currently teaches, Dr.  Joyce Arriola graduated with a Bachelor of Arts major in Literature degree, cum Laude in 1988. She earned her graduate degrees in Literature: MA in Literature in 1995; Ph.D. in Literature, Summa cum Laude in 2003, from the 六合彩直播开奖 Graduate School. She obtained graduate degrees, MA in Communication, major in Journalism in 1998 and Ph.D. in Communication, Best Dissertation Award in 2013, from the University of the Philippines.

The event was conceptualized as a hybrid in-person program with a few members of the academic community in the venue and students and faculty members from the Faculty of Arts and Letters as part of the online audience. Faculty Secretary Asst. Prof. Ma. Zenia Rodriguez was the remote Master of Ceremonies. Onsite Master of Ceremonies was Asst. Dean Assoc. Prof. Alejandro S. Bernardo, Ph.D. The virtual program remains publicly available for viewing

sGraduate School faculty member Prof. Joyce Arriola鈥檚 work was recently published as a chapter in a book anthology released by the Amsterdam University Press.

The book titled 鈥淪outheast Asia on Screen: From Independence to Financial Crisis (1945-1998)鈥 was edited by Gaik Cheng Khoo (University of Nottingham Malaysia), Thomas Barker (University of Nottingham Malaysia) and Mary Jane Ainslie (University of Nottingham Ningbo China) and featured scholars from Malaysia, Philippines, Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Singapore. From a historical perspective, the book tackles the rise of post-war cinemas from Southeast Asia, how these negotiate colonial influence, and build national expressions throughout the different political regimes until the Asian financial crisis of the 1990s.

Arriola, who also teaches at the Faculty of Arts and Letters, wrote a chapter contribution titled 鈥淭he 1950s Filipino Komiks-to-Film Adaptation during the Studio Era鈥 is placed under the first section of the book titled 鈥淚ndependence and Post-World War II Filmmaking: Nation-building, Modernity and Golden Eras.鈥 The said chapter tackles how post-war Philippine film industry rose from the devastation caused by the Second World War through the revitalization of the studio system that had been in place before the breakout of the war. The four major film studios of the 1950s 鈥 LVN, Sampaguita, Premiere and Lebran 鈥 each took a particular genre or two where they could specialize.
The studios also collaborated harmoniously with the komiks industry – then featured in both mixed-format magazines and in dedicated publications – which became the steady supplier of materials for the film industry. Stories from the komiks were drawn from korido (metrical romance), historical events, personages, popular culture, and true events.
Arriola argues that David Forgacs鈥 idea of 鈥渘ational-popular鈥 may be applied on the synergistic relationship between the komiks industry and the film industry.

Adaptations became the instrument for nationalizing creative expressions, even if the source materials were foreign and colonial. They created, in the process, a formative realization of vernacular modernism wherein the new technology of modernity (cinema) is vernacularized or localized.
The book 鈥淪outheast Asia on Screen鈥 is part of the Asian Visual Cultures series spearheaded by Amsterdam University Press, which is one of the top academic presses in the world today.

The publication project took almost two years and invited scholars from Southeast Asia who could best articulate the rise, growth, problems and potential of post-war Southeast Asian cinemas.

Considered as an important contribution to a more specific and detailed study of Southeast Asian cinema, the book trains its lens on the impact of the nationalist movements on Southeast Asian cinemas; the struggle with different political ideologies and cultures; the influence of the West upon the form and genres of film products; the impact of the Asian financial crisis on the rise of independent cinema; and, the promise brought by digital technology and the new contexts around which emergent filmmakers built their fresh creative expressions.

Arriola鈥檚 work on the 1950s film adaptation culture has been part of her long-running interest in adaptation studies and adaptation theory. In 2019, she released her second book on adaptation titled Pelikulang Komiks: Toward a Theory of Filipino Film Adaptation (University of the Philippines Press). The National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) recognized Prof. Joyce L. Arriola, Ph.D., for her book 鈥淧elikulang Komiks: Toward a Theory of Filipino Film Adaptation.鈥 She received the 2021 Outstanding Book/Monograph Award on June 1, 2021.

NAST presents this award annually for books and/or monographs published by Filipino publishers and authors based in the Philippines within five years preceding the award.

鈥淧elikulang Komiks鈥 tackles a proposed/emergent Filipino komiks-to-film adaptation theory based on archival texts from the 1950s. An inventory of extant texts led to the selection of the identification of twelve cases of komiks-to-film adaptations, representing Filipinized genres such as the korido film; fantasy/ folklore, family drama, woman鈥檚 film, personality comedy, and historical film. Contemporary adaptation criticism was also employed to explain constructs specific to Filipino narrative culture. Moreover, a social film history based on unstructured interviews with ten key informants provided the context to the texts analyzed. This was supplemented by periodicals published in the fifties.

Arriola was a recipient of the 2018 Achievement Award in the Humanities by the National Research Council of the Philippines and won the National Book Award for Film/Film Criticism in 2007 for the book titled 鈥淧ostmodern Filming of Literature: Sources, Contexts, and Adaptations.鈥 She is a professor of literature and communication at the 六合彩直播开奖, where she was the Director of the 六合彩直播开奖 Research Center for Culture, Arts, and Humanities from January 2017 to December 2019.

Published by the University of the Philippines Press in 2019, Pelikulang Komiks can be found at their online store: https://press.up.edu.ph/store/books/view_item/736

The book entitled 鈥淧elikulang Komiks鈥 by Professor Joyce L. Arriola, PhD of the Faculty of Arts and Letters and the Graduate School was awarded a 2021 National Academy of Science and Technology Outstanding Book and/or Monograph recognition.

Pelikulang Komiks tackles the major assumptions of a proposed/emergent Filipino komiks-to-film adaptation theory based on archival texts from the 1950s. The main concern of Arriola鈥檚 work is to present the concepts and assumptions about komiks-to-film adaptation that will constitute the proposed Filipino film adaptation theory.

鈥淎t a time when comic book characters appear on the big screen with some regularity, and American research on comics-to-film adaptation is ripe, Joyce L. Arriola’s book is most welcome. Not only does Pelikulang Komiks…offer a non-Western perspective on film adaptation, but it does so with systematic research, thorough analysis, and clear expression. Professor Arriola has made a significant contribution to both cinema and comic art theory for which we are grateful,鈥 writes John A. Lent, publisher/editor-in-chief International Journal of Comic Art.

鈥淛oyce L. Arriola鈥檚 new book is a remarkably prescient study of Filipino popular culture. Combining in equal measure historical imagination, cultural understanding, and sensitivity to film and komiks, it generates numerous insights and pathways of inquiry that the interested reader can pursue with profit. Carefully researched, lucidly written, cogently argued, and theoretically sophisticated, this book will make a distinctive contribution to the growing body of critical literature on Asian popular culture.鈥 Professor Wimal Dissanayake of the Academy for Creative Media-University of Hawaii writes in the blurb.

Arriola, a multi-awarded academic and the 2018 Research Council of the Philippines Achievement Awardee for Humanities Research, is a research fellow of the Research Center for Culture, Arts, and the Humanities, where she was also Founding Director. She teaches at the Graduate School and the Faculty of Arts and Letters, where she used to head the Department of Communication and Media Studies and the Department of Literature and the Humanities.

六合彩直播开奖 Graduate School literature and communication professor, Dr. Joyce L. Arriola, delivered a lecture titled 鈥淔inding my Voice as a Researching Self鈥 as part of the second webisode of iShare: Stories of Inspiration and Creative Research by the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP). The webisode is a venue for streaming lectures by NRCP Achievement Awardees, particularly their journeys and inspirational messages. Arriola鈥檚 segment was shot at the 六合彩直播开奖 campus and streamed via zoom on February 24, 2021, as part of the lecture programme. She was awarded the 2018 NRCP Achievement Award in the Humanities in March 2019.

In the particular webisode, Arriola traced her research journey as a scholar from her childhood in Bulakan, Bulacan, a town known as 鈥渁 land of writers.鈥 The town鈥檚 distinction as having produced several Filipinos 鈥渨ho fought the revolution, joined the Propaganda Movement and did a lot of service to the nation鈥 somehow impressed on her young mind the value of pursuing work as a call to service. She knew she must spend many years reading the best that has been written to be an excellent communicator in the future. Thus, she took literature as her major. After college, as she took her first graduate course at the University of the Philippines, she learned about social science research and the need for social responsibility. Eventually finding a job as Information Officer at the Bureau of Broadcast Services, a line agency of the Office of the Press Secretary, she received proper training in applied communication and media research.

It was in 1993 when Arriola decided to teach and that it 鈥減lunged her deep into academic research,鈥 which began an illustrious career that would span decades and would produce an extensive publication history ranging from research on the institutional history, organization and academic programs of 六合彩直播开奖, to literary and cultural studies, and to communication and media studies.

Arriola did not only publish actively, she also got herself involved with research networking activities by joining professional organizations; by lending her expertise as member of editorial boards of reputable research journals; by engaging in international collaborative publication projects; and, by contributing to research policy-making through her involvement with the NRCP, the CHED Technical Panel for Literature, and the NCCA National Committee for Literary Arts. The 六合彩直播开奖 Graduate School is pivotal to Arriola鈥檚 dynamic research career. In 2003, she obtained her Ph.D. Literature degree, Summa Cum Laude. Her doctoral dissertation titled 鈥淧ostmodern Filming of Literature: Sources, Contexts and Adaptations鈥 was published in 2006 by the 六合彩直播开奖 Publishing House. A year later, the publication won the National Book Award for Film/Film Criticism.

Arriola鈥檚 initiatives led to the establishment of the MA Communication program in 2001, which was cited as one of the Top 200 Best Master Programs Worldwide by EDUNIVERSAL Masters Ranking for The Best Masters and MBA Worldwide in 2011. Under her leadership, the MA Literature program received its Level 4 PACUCOA accreditation, the Ph.D. Literature its Level 1 accreditation and the MA Communication its Preliminary Level 1 candidacy. A mentor to many master鈥檚 and doctoral students, Arriola claims that she has been happy 鈥渢o breath life鈥 onto other people who would like to pursue the life of the mind.

The St. Antoninus of Florence Award, the 六合彩直播开奖 Graduate School Outstanding Alumni Award, was conferred upon Arriola in 2014.  When she won an NRCP Achievement Award in 2018, it also marked the first year the indexed publications became a more emphasized criterion for the NRCP award. Arriola鈥檚 award was proof that humanities researchers can penetrate the high stakes world dominated by metrics and scientific quantification.

Prof. Joyce L. Arriola, PhD, former Chair of the Department of Literature and former Director of the Research Center for Culture, Arts, and the Humanities, revisited the early days of her career as a researcher and gave insights on producing quality research in the 2nd episode of iShare, a webinar hosted by the National Research Council Philippines.

Laying the foundations for an interdisciplinary academic

Arriola recalled her 鈥渙bscure鈥 days in the University as a BA Literature freshman who followed her heart despite literature not being the top-of-mind choice for an undergraduate program that promises later financial success. This reputation of the program did not deter the avid reader who was raised in Bulakan, Bulacan. 鈥淏ulakan is the land of writers,鈥 recalling to the town鈥檚 rich history of writers and heroes who have distinguished themselves in the nation.

Arriola鈥檚 upbringing would have its own share of historical events. After the 1986 ESDA Revolution, Arriola discovered the inspiration to find her voice as a literature undergraduate after 鈥渞ealizing the importance of the free press, culture, writers, values, and morals for the nation.鈥

Being exposed to a wealth of ideas, advocacies, and perspectives, Arriola recalled how she was often in between practicality and idealism鈥攖o the point that there were moments of indecision. 鈥淚 realized that these kind of indecisions鈥攎e, being in between worlds鈥攚ould define my career later on,鈥 she said.

According to Arriola, the qualities she developed in her undergraduate days were understanding the value of focused, uninterrupted reading. 鈥(What I learned about research as an undergraduate literature major was) the need for note-taking, the need for looking for details, for close examination of sources. (It is) very important for a researcher,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hat do you do after you have left the field and you have gathered the data? You sit down and write. Patience is important and close-reading, which is very important if you want to follow a career in research,鈥 she said.

After exiting the Arch of the Centuries, Arriola marched to the University of the Philippines to join the world of mass media and took up MA Journalism, where she became more equipped with knowledge on social sciences, qualitative and quantitative research, social theories, and social responsibility. It was in this phase that Arriola began to look into the higher purpose of research鈥攂eyond just being a career and a source of income. 鈥淲hat can it do for the nation?鈥 was a question she often asked.

Improving the quality of truth

Giving advice to would-be researchers, especially in the Humanities, Arriola highlighted the importance of a compelling argument. 鈥淚 learned the value or the role of improving the quality of truth. What do I want to become? But then I realized it should not be only about me,鈥 she said. At this point, the 鈥渞esearch voice鈥 Arriola longed to hear in her journey was gradually letting itself be heard. 鈥淚f you can do something for your community, for the nation, that will really give you a compelling argument that will give you the best rationale for your study,鈥 she said.

Arriola talked at length as well about the qualities a researcher must have. 鈥淪o more than disinterestedness, more than the accuracy, what is important is also rigor,鈥 she said. This mindset proved useful when she entered government service, as a researcher and content provider in the Philippines Broadcast Service. 鈥淚 consider that one of the seeds planted for my entrance into academic research,鈥 Arriola narrated.

Returning to Espa帽a

Arriola鈥檚 exposure to practical research in the government made her yearn to bring it to the academe and enlighten aspiring researchers who wanted to take the similar journey.  鈥淢y entrance to the academe, the University, plunged me deep into the arena of academic research. The very first test of a faculty member doing research, or whether he or she has the ability conduct research, would be the graduate papers,鈥 she said.  鈥淚t is a test of experience, so you need to produce good graduate papers, MA or dissertation. Just work on your thesis and your dissertation, and after that you go on with your life,鈥 she advised the younger generation of faculty members.

Arriola said her works, such as researches about the 六合彩直播开奖 Educational Technology Center, former Rector Rev. Fr. Frederik S. Fermin, O.P., and a textbook on Philippine Literature, were dedicated to the institution. In time, her theses and dissertation served as springboards for her research publications, which exposed her to the refereeing and critiquing of other scholars. 鈥淵ou are not writing for yourself. You are writing for other people, so you have to convince other people,鈥 Arriola said, recognizing the importance of feedback in improving one鈥檚 work.

The blending of fields

Being a practitioner in the fields of communication and literature, Arriola said the cusp between the two respective fields was Cultural Studies. Her entry into this field has led her to understand better the present, as guided by the past, in an attempt to answer the post-colonial questions of 鈥淲ho are we?鈥 and 鈥淲hat are we?鈥

As such, her studies on film, literature, and media studies are now available for the world to read through the reputable journals and publications where they are immortalized.

Not one to forget her roots, Arriola likewise does disciplinal studies either in communication or literature. 鈥淔rom time to time I would do disciplinal studies because I realize I must contribute to the discipline. Or else, nobody is going to write about it,鈥 she said. As such, some of her publications were related to communication and media. 鈥淲e have, after EDSA, a renewed democracy. And a renewed democracy is in need of free press, a responsible press.鈥

Weaving connections with fellow scholars from all over the world

Meanwhile, Arriola said the researcher must go beyond its field and explore the terrains outside their discipline. She reiterated that the researcher must have a lengthy meter of both patience and rigor.

Likewise, she highlighted the importance of networking and meeting new people from various fields through conferences. 鈥淵ou will not only gain friends. These are like-minded individuals who share your interest in some disciplines,鈥 she said.

In one instance, Arriola recalled that a fellow researcher approached her and asked her if she could publish works with them.  鈥滻f you do your job, somehow, people will approach you and they will say, 鈥楥an we collaborate?鈥 You are not a lowly scientist from a third-world country. You are one with them,鈥 she said.

Arriola cited that in the field of Humanities, they publish more books than research journal articles. However, it takes time to publish a book. 鈥淏ooks are very difficult to produce, especially if it is an anthology where you have so many collaborators. So, you really have to study what they want out of you,鈥 she noted. Of particular importance to her is her book 鈥淧ostmodern Filming of Literature: Sources, Contexts and Adaptations鈥, published by the 六合彩直播开奖 Publishing House, which bagged the National Book Award for Film/Film Criticism in 2007.

鈥淲e have to join professional organizations. They will enrich your research, and somehow you contribute to an organization that, in turn contributes to society. Getting involved with research journals connects us to a wider audience,鈥 she said.

On mentoring, quality reading, and producing indigenous knowledge

Arriola said engaging in discipleship and mentoring was the ultimate joy of a professor. 鈥淚t is about giving, breathing life on another human being through what you have learned,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he peak of success is sharing,鈥 she added.

Moreover, Arriola underscored that for the researcher to produce a quality thesis, he/she must devote time reading journal articles to strengthen their Review of Related Literature chapter.

According to Arriola, to indigenize knowledge, it must come from the researcher鈥檚 perspective. Recognizing our colonial past, Arriola warned against the historical dependence on 鈥渞eceived knowledge,鈥 which has prevented local scholars from producing their own original, localized categories of terms. 鈥淲hen we can intellectualize knowledge in our languages, more than 130 of them, then that would mean we can have an original take on world knowledge,鈥 she said. For Arriola, the culmination of local researchers鈥 journey in scientific theorizing is when our theories can already be expressed in our local language.

Arriola received the 2018 NCRP Achievement Award – Division of Humanities to recognize her dedication in promoting Philippine literary education, indigenous culture, and Filipino discourse.

The second webisode of iShare featured Arriola and Dr. Karlo L. Quea帽o, a Regular Member of the NRCP Division of Earth and Space Sciences.

Faculty of Arts and Letters and Graduate School faculty member Prof. Joyce L. Arriola, Ph.D., conducted a research study on the film adaptation of Filipino聽komiks聽stories, and this is now a published book, titled聽 鈥Pelikulang Komiks: Towards a Theory of Filipino Film Adaptation.鈥 聽 The book is a landmark study of adaptation practices in the Philippines, particularly聽komiks-to-film adaptation in the 1950s.聽

The book examined 12 extant films from the 1950s that have been based on 12 extant komiks series. Using grounded theory, textual analysis, and social history of the 1950s, the study proposed a theory of Filipino film adaptation. The researcher鈥檚 eventual aim was to de-Westernize theory and to unravel Filipino film adaptation practices through indigenous concepts of narrative, appropriation and hybridity.

The introduction of the book was written by Filipino popular studies scholar Soledad Reyes, while the blurbs were taken from the reviews given by film scholar and theorist, Prof. Wimal Dissayanake of the University of Hawaii, and Temple University鈥檚 Professor Emeritus John Lent, who is not only a komiks scholar but is also the author of landmark books on Asian mass communication.

The book likewise featured  key informants who are the most prominent scholars on the dialogue between film and komiks, such as National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera, renowned Filipino literary and film scholar Soledad Reyes, multi-awarded Filipino filmmaker Nick Deocampo, highly-acclaimed Filipino director and screenwriter Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr., Filipino komiks artist and publisher Boboy Yonzon, Filipino comic book artist Randy Valiente, literary and cultural studies scholar D.M Reyes, Art Studies professor and renowned art curator Patrick Flores, Art History professor Santiago Pilar, and mass communication historian Prof. John Lent. The interviews conducted with them provided the social and cultural contexts to the text analysed.

A number of the chapters included in the book have been presented in prominent national and international conferences. Corollary to this, Pelikulang Komiks (which is Arriola鈥檚 second), has been based on her Ph.D. Communication dissertation from the University of the Philippines Diliman and which earned her a Best Dissertation Award in 2013.

Arriola was also conferred the Distinctive Achievement in the Humanities Award by the National Research Council of the Philippines in 2018.

Aside from Arriola鈥檚 book was that of 六合彩直播开奖 alumnus and CCWLS鈥檚 Carlomar Arcangel Daoana鈥檚 The Elegant Ghost: Poems, that was launched among the 24 new titles published and released by the University of the Philippines Press.
