The National Catechetical Study research team, led by Professor Clarence M. Batan, PhD, recently launched the virtual book entitled 鈥淜atekistang Malikhain: Mga Turong-Gabay sa Gawaing Katekesis,鈥 in time for the celebration of the Feast of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The launch, which took place via YouTube on January 28, 2022, brought together the ideas and expertise of various pedagogues and catechists to produce the book.

The latest output of the NCS 2021 project

In his introduction, Batan said that the book was the output of combined inputs from the catechists鈥 stories, stories of pedagogy, stories of holiness, and creative catechesis. The book mixes the use of parables, lectures, prayers, conversations, poems, dance, songs, theater, and visuals as part of the pedagogical armament of catechists as they carry out their ministry in their respective areas.

A key feature of the book is the 鈥渞etablo鈥 of saints and blessed who were known catechists and thus serve as role models for those continuing the ministry.

The book is the fourth of a projected seven-part series of books/modules arising from The National Catechetical Study (NCS) 2021: Pastoral Action Research and Intervention (PARI) Project jointly carried out by 六合彩直播开奖鈥檚 Research Center for Social Sciences and Education and the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education.

The book was edited by Batan, along with associate editors Keith Aaron T. Joven, Joan Cristi T. Bagaipo, PhD, Renniel Jayson J. Rosales, Leonardo O. Quimson, Jr, MA, and Jonathan James O. Ca帽ete. Joining them in the project were Christine C. Balmceda, Ser Allan G. Bodoraya, Tricia Mae V. Cruz, MA, Arthur G. Octubre, Ma. Elena P. Octubre, Abigael Maitim-Padilla, Maria Corazon C. Sanin, MA, and Mc Kyle F. Vilaz.

The National Catechetical Study group of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education, in celebration of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christianity in the Philippines in partnership with the Digital Evangelization Network PH (DevNet), recently piloted the use of the 鈥淕od鈥檚 Park鈥 mobile app, a child-friendly catechesis app developed by Ichthys Digital Initiatives LLC, for young Catholics preparing to receive their first Holy Communication.

God’s Park

The app, which is downloadable on both the App Store and Google Play Store, had its pilot run in the Dioceses of Balanga, Cabanatuan, Cubao, Daet, Dumaguete, Novaliches, and Archdiocese of Davao. It aimed to fill the gap in catechetical instruction caused by movement and gathering restrictions as a result of the pandemic.

With focus on preparing for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist, the app rollout, which was sponsored by the said dioceses, recruited children who are not enrolled in schools but are preparing to receive their first Holy Communion. A catechist was designated to guide the students, who after using the app meet the catechist virtually to understand better what the app presented.

The National Catechetical Study has been a project of the 六合彩直播开奖-RCSSEd, with its lead researcher Professor Clarence M. Batan, PhD, for several years now. It is conducted in partnership with the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines – Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education.

of the of the presented papers and served as program coordinator and session organizer at the XIX World Congress of Sociology of the International Sociological Association held at Metro Toronto Convention Centre, Toronto, Canada from July 15-21, 2018.

Batan presented two papers, first on his research expertise on istambay phenomenon entitled, Unearthing Structural & Symbolic Violences in the Lives of Filipino Istambays, and second, as a documenter of history of Philippine Sociology entitled, Recent Developments and Prospects in the Teaching, Training and Practice of Sociology in the Philippines.

The first paper interrogated the concept of structural and symbolic violences in the lives of selected self-reported Filipino istambays (on standbys) in relation to the widely perceived notion of 鈥渨aithood鈥 particularly experienced during youthhood, locally known in the Philippines as the 鈥渋stambay鈥 phenomenon. Using life course data from the Social Investigation on the Lives of Istambays in the Philippines (SILIP) project covering four marginalized research sites, this study examined how an istambay experiences constitute, shape, and influence what may be considered as experiences of violence impacting specifically their education and employment life trajectories. The paper argued that the limited education and employment experiences (and the lack thereof) of selected istambay respondents unravels both structural and symbolic violences that entrench the stereotypical perception of their idleness and inactivity. These violences appeared to constitute and engender varying dynamics of social interruptions that these istambays encounter, negotiate, and to some, able to overcome. The paper concludes with some research insights on how further analysis of violences and social interruptions as working concepts may offer new avenues in studying istambay phenomenon in the country.

The second paper interrogated on the history and development of Philippine Sociology in the context of Global South discourse. It directs attention to (a) contexts鈥 the recent developments and prospects in the teaching, training and practice of Sociology in the Philippines; (b) contentions 鈥 the critical space of knowledge production and disputes between local and international sociologies; and (c) commitments 颅鈥 the promise of Sociology in responding to better understand contemporary social problems impinging Philippine society in relation to the global world. Using archival documents and ethnographic observations, this paper argues that while state regulation in the teaching and training of Sociology has relatively been in place, the pursuit to develop a more-grounded and contextualized Philippine Sociology (in terms of theory and methods) remains wanting. In so doing, the examination dives and thrives into Global South discourse to make sense of what Philippine Sociology has become and what it would be in the future.

Batan also served as program coordinator of the RC34 Sociology of Youth panels and as session organizer of Migration, Mobilities and Borders with youth sociologists from France, China, Spain, and Japan.

Batan is Vice-President for Asia of the Research Committee (RC) 34 鈥 Sociology of Youth (2014-2018) and President of the Philippine Sociological Society (2017-2018).

The World Congress of Sociology brings together more than 5,000 sociologists and social scientists every four years. The next world congress will be held at Melbourne, Australia on 2022.

With the theme 鈥淕urong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad鈥 (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng 六合彩直播开奖 (Honor of 六合彩直播开奖) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message. 鈥淧inapatunayan ito ng napakaraming mahuhusay at kapuri-puring indibidwal na mula sa iba鈥檛-ibang larangan na nagmula sa ating pamantasan,鈥

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. 鈥

Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in 六合彩直播开奖 as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. 鈥淪ila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,鈥 he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle 鈥渞epeater sections鈥 and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: 鈥Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa 六合彩直播开奖.鈥

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng 六合彩直播开奖, except the Gawad Benavides).
