Castillo is hailed 2021 Best Mentor in Health Research

Prof. Agnes L. Castillo, PhD, a faculty member of the Department of Pharmacy and a resident researcher at the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences, was named 2021 Best Mentor in Health Research – Graduate Category during the 15th Philippine National Health Research Week held at Marriott Hotel, Clark, Pampanga on August 8-12, 2022.

The Best Mentor Award was given in recognition of the vital role of the research mentor who shares knowledge and skills, instills values and attitudes, and inspires those involved in the research process, thereby creating an enabling environment and contributing to capacity-building in research.

Apart from mentoring students in PhD in Pharmacy and MS in Pharmacy programs at the Graduate School, Prof. Dr. Castillo has mentored students in the BS-Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) programs offered by the Faculty of Pharmacy.

She is also serving as the Coordinator for Internationalization, Mobility and Linkages of the Faculty of Pharmacy and has led several research projects funded by CHED, PITAHC and NRCP.

Dr. Castillo is one of the 25 recipients of the Philippine Men and Women of Science awarded by the DOST in 2015. She was also a DOST-SEI SCHOLARSHIP Awardee in 2010-2012 and received the DOST ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AWARD in July 2013. She is a registered pharmacist and a botanist, and is a member of the PPhA, PACOP, NPSP, NRCP and ACCP.

Pajimna, Castillo, Dean Dacanay of Pharmacy win 2nd place in UP-NIH research poster contest

��ϲ�ֱ�� Faculty of Pharmacy faculty members Inst. Roi Martin B. Pajimna, Assoc. Prof. Agnes L. Castillo, PhD, and Dean Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD were awarded Second Place in the research poster competition hosted by the University of the Philippines – National Institutes of Health on the occasion of its 24th anniversary. The said competition took place from March 2-4, 2022.

The research poster entitled “Monitoring Aminoglycoside Therapy in Neonates: Gaps and Opportunities in a Resource-Limited Setting” used as a backdrop the problem of neonatal infections in low- to middle-income countries like the Philippines as a significant contributor to mortality among newborns. The study focused on the use and monitoring of aminoglycoside among newborns in an urban, public, and resource-limited hospital in Manila and identified gaps in the clinical use of the same. The identified gaps were the bases for identified opportunities for improvement of therapeutic drug monitoring in pediatrics.

The study utilized both a review of records of patients and wards, as well as interviews with practicing pediatricians, which together provided data for the gap analysis. Among the gaps identified are the absence of clinical pharmacists, insufficient diagnostic protocol for sepsis, and the lack of healthcare TDM knowledge and absence of TDM protocols. The authors provided recommendations to address these gaps and ensure better healthcare. “These findings could serve as the bases in formulating strategic directions to improve the practices of aminoglycoside use and monitoring to ensure patient safety and quality of care.”

Castillo of Pharmacy, GS recognized as one of best health research mentors

Assoc. Prof. Agnes L. Castillo, PhD, a faculty member of the Department of Pharmacy of the Faculty of Pharmacy and the Graduate School, was hailed as one of the eight outstanding health research mentors (representing the National Capital Region cluster for the Graduate Category) by the Department of Science and Technology – Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), which .

Castillo, who to date has mentored two PhD in Pharmacy and fifteen MS in Pharmacy students in completing their terminal research requirements, most of which were published in Scopus-indexed journals, was recognized for her ability to guide budding health researchers toward making significant contributions to their respective fields. She continues mentoring a new batch of scientists, a group of 12 advisees, most of whom are conducting experiments for their respective studies.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Castillo disclosed her belief that health researchers “must be mindful of the scientific integrity and ethical soundness of research protocol through good research practice so as to maintain quality, relevance and reliability of research output,” emphasizing the importance of character in being a good researcher. While she acknowledges that most students begin with degree acquisition as their end-goal, she hopes to impart to them that ‘having the degree is just an icing on the cake.” Among the values she strives to impart to her advisees are “focus, determination, time management, proper documentation, honesty, patience, and a lot of hard work,” as well humility and being teachable.

Once a student herself, Castillo paid homage to her own mentors, the late Dr. Eduardo de Leon, Assoc. Prof. Ma. Tomasa Ochoa, Dr. Marina Osi, former Science Dean John Donnie A. Ramos, PhD, as well as Academician Maribel G. Nonato, PhD. Meanwhile, Prof. Grecebio Jonathan D. Alejandro, Dr. rer. nat., and Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences Director Bernard John V. Tongol, PhD provided the recommendation letters for Castillo’s nomination. She dedicated the award to her family and thanked her students, colleagues, and superiors, namely Pharmacy Dean Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, in the academe.

Currently, she and her students are working on various projects, such as on the anti-inflammatory activity of Pandanus spp., chondroprotective potential of Alipinia, antihyperuricemic activity of Dillenia. Some of the projects have gone past the experimentation phase and are awaiting the publication of results. Meanwhile, their current project is studying the antiangiogenesis property of syringin and alpinumisoflavone. Funding agencies such as the Commission on Higher Education, National Research Council of the Philippines, and the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care have provided support to several undertakings.

Research poster on Tagbak plant as aid against osteoarthritis wins NAST award

A research poster on the potential of the “Tagbak,” a Philippine endemic plant, to help alleviate osteoarthritis, won an award from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), in its recent July 2021 virtual convention.

The study, entitled “Modulation of oxidative stress and biological markers of osteoarthritis by the Philippine endemic plant Alpinia elegans (C. Presl) K. Schum leaf extracts, was co-authored by Mae Lee T. Tumaneng of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School’s Master of Science in Pharmacy program and Assoc. Prof. Agnes L. Castillo, PhD, who also teaches at the Graduate School and at the Faculty of pharmacy.

The study aimed to the address the gap in medications available for osteoarthritis (OA), which only has medications for improving functionality and quality of life. The researchers looked into the potential of Tagbak, traditionally used for musculoskeletal diseases, to be chrondroprotective, in that it will help prevent or delay cartilage degradation. Thus, Tagbak leaf extracts were subjected to various levels of assessment and analysis.

Tumaneng and Castillo found that the chrondroprotective activity of Tagbak leaf extracts “is attributed to its ability to inhibit reactive oxygen species, while [maintaining] the antioxidant enzymes.” This leads to “the suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and matrix degrading enzymes due to the presence of putative compounds, specifically polyphenols and flavonoids.”

Tumaneng and Castillo’s work was supported by the Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care, the Commission on Higher Education, and the Research Center for the Natural and Applied Sciences.

Three pharmacy faculty members to serve NRCP pharma division for 2021-2023

Department of Pharmacy faculty researchers Assoc. Prof. Agnes L. Castillo, PhD, Prof. Mary Jho-Anne T. Corpuz, PhD, and Asst. Prof. Jay P. Jazul, MSc were elected as officers/executive committee members of the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) – Division of Pharmaceutical Sciences (Division 4). The virtual induction was held on June 9, 2021.

Castillo will serve as NRCP – Division IV’s Vice-Chair, while Jazul will fill the role of Secretary. Corpuz, the Chair of ��ϲ�ֱ��’s Department of Pharmacy, will lead the Research and Development Committee. The newly minted Thomasian officers will serve the pharmaceutical sciences division from 2021 to 2023.

Apart from their roles in NRCP, in the University, Castillo serves as the Faculty of Pharmacy’s coordinator/supervisor for International Relations and is a researcher at the Research Center for Natural and Applied Sciences (RCNAS), where Corpuz is also a researcher. Meanwhile, Jazul is a researcher at the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSEd).

NRCP is the scientific body of the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) that promotes and supports research for the national interest.

Castillo of Pharmacy, RCNAS presents paper on anti-inflammatory activity of Pandanus in Yogyakarta conference

, a faculty member of the and researcher of the , presented a research paper entitled “Anti-inflammatory activity of selected Pandanus species in the Philippines” in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Castillo’s paper was presented during the 6th International Conference on Pharmacy and Advanced Pharmaceutical Sciences and the 3rd International Conference on Pharmacy Education and Research Network of ASEAN.

The research used alcohol and aqueous extracts from the leaves of Pandanus luzonensis, Pandanus panayensis, and Pandanus simplex, and crude extracts were subjected to carrageenan-induced paw edema test.

The findings of the study showed that ethanolic leaf extract of P. panayensis showed sustained inhibitory effects with comparable inhibitory activity, leading to the conclusion that the extract has potential benefits in treating inflammatory conditions.

Castillo’s co-authors in the paper were Prima M. de Jesus, Kerstin Mariae G. Ponsaran, Prof. Jovencio G. Apostol, PhD, and , whose seminal research on the Pandanus helped spur efforts to study the species.

Pharmacy explores possibilities of collaboration with two Australian universities

Dean , together with academic officials, namely, Faculty Secretary Asst. Prof. Renz Kenneth G. Cadiang, International Relations Officer , Chair Assoc. Prof. Edilberto Manahan, Ph.D., and Advance Pharmacy Practice Experience Coordinator Assoc. Prof. Nelson Tubon, Ph.D., visited the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics of the Monash University in Australia on July 29, 2019.

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� Pharmacy officials were welcomed by the administrative and academic officials of Monash University, namely, Project Pharmacist Director Prof. John Jackson, Centre for Medicine Use and Safety Director Prof. Simon Bell, Prof. Tina Brock, Ph.D., Acting Dean Peter Scammells, Centre for Medicine Use and Safety Director Prof. Carl Kirkpatrick, and Centre for Medicine Prof. Kirsten Galbraith, Ph.D., Chair of Centre for Medicine Use and Safety.

Included in the discussion were matters such as the Pharmacy practice in Australia, research on medication use and safety, Pharmacy curriculum, faculty profile, experiential development and graduate education. There were also discussions on collaborative research and publications, co-supervision for research students, mobility programs, exchange students, and the use of Monash facilities for ��ϲ�ֱ�� faculty members and students involved in research. After the round table discussion, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� delegates were toured around the facilities and laboratories of the Monash Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutics.

At UNISA: Discussions and laboratory visits

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� group led by Dean Dacanay was at the University of South Australia (UNISA) from July 24 to 27, 2019 for discussions of possibilities of collaborative research and publications, co-supervision for research students, mobility programs, exchange students, global internship for UNISA students in the Philippines for immersion to Pharmacy and Medical Technology practice, and the use of UNISA facilities for ��ϲ�ֱ�� faculty members and students involved in research. After the round table discussion, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� delegates were toured around the facilities and laboratories of the UNISA School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, such as Pharmaceutics, Pharmacology, among others.

The group also visited the Royal Adelaide Hospital Pharmacy Department, and Medical Laboratory Department. They went on a UNISA Medical Sciences Lab tour with Prof. Brian Dale, Ph.D. The tour of the UNISA School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences Laboratory was facilitated by Department of Pharmacy Chair Prof. Matthew Sykes, Ph.D., while the tour of the State Herbarium of South Australia was made possible with the assistance of Mr. Martin O’Leary, botanist and curator. The tour of the Adelaide Botanical Garden was facilitated by Dr. Susan Semple.

As part of the activities during the visit to UNISA, faculty members from the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Faculty of Pharmacy presented their papers at the UNISA-��ϲ�ֱ�� symposium held on July 27, 2019 at the School of Pharmacy and Medical Sciences, UNISA West Campus. This was attended by UNISA faculty members and students in the Graduate School. Dean Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, Ph.D., presented ‘Pharmacy Practice Experience,’ Assoc. Prof. Agnes L. Castillo, Ph.D., discussed ‘Nano-engineered Delivery Systems for Antimicrobials,’ while Asst. Prof. Renz Kenneth Cadiang, presented an ‘Analysis of Medication Utilization among Filipino Elderly.’

��ϲ�ֱ�� recognizes research achievements of faculty

A total of 121 faculty members were recognized in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Science and Technology, and Sacred Sciences by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation during the Recognition Program held on March 16, 2018 at the Paredes Building, ��ϲ�ֱ��. They were granted the Gold Series Award and the Silver Series Award for AY 2014 to 2016 and the International Publications Award for AY 2014-2017. ��ϲ�ֱ�� Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation , assisted by the directors of the respective research centers gave the awards.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the ��ϲ�ֱ�� as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

Under the Creative Works Category, the awardee should be a tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least three creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

International Publications Award (2014–2017)

The International Publications Award is presented to all full time faculty members teaching only in ��ϲ�ֱ�� for the publication of their research outputs in journal/s and books indexed in the Web of Science/ Scopus with IF Quartile Metrics Ranking. Author byline should indicate the ��ϲ�ֱ�� as address in the publication.
