Five Thomasian health experts served as resource persons for the Committee on Trade and Industry of the House of Representatives on February 20, 2024, when a deliberation on an e-Pharmacy/e-Botika bill was being heard.

Faculty of Pharmacy Dean Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, Faculty of Medicine and Surgery academic researcher Maria Minerva P. Calimag, MD, PhD, and alumni Antonio Leachon, MD, Alfredo So, and Vicente U. Briones met with lawmakers to share their position on the bill filed by Rep. Ferjenel G. Biron.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, Dean Dacanay mentioned that the group agreed to the bill, provided that provisions will be included for the protection of consumers against scrupulous e-prescriptions. Thus, safeguards on signatures, surrender of used prescriptions, and partial filling should be in place. Furthermore, the bill should clearly define legitimate online pharmacies given the proliferation of online sellers. Finally, the group advocated for an education campaign should the bill be approved.

Dacanay represented the Philippine Pharmacists Association, while Calimag spoke for the Philippine Medical Association. So is currently the President of the Consumer Healthcare Industry Association of the Philippines, while Briones heads the Drugstores Association of the Philippines. Leachon attended as a private individual in the hearing.

Professor Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, was installed as the 25th President of the Philippine Pharmacists Association, Inc. (PPHA) becoming only the second Thomasian leader of the country鈥檚 premier pharmacist association after Prof. Jose B. Gallardo (1962-1964). Dacanay, who was installed on June 25, 2023, will serve a three-year term ending in 2026.

In her inaugural address, Dacanay stressed the importance of unity and solidarity that will necessitate 鈥渢he involvement of every officer and member of the association鈥.Everyone has an important role to play here and our goal must always be for the good of the association.鈥 Anchoring her leadership on the actions Lead, Empower, and Innovate, Dacanay expressed excitement for the next three years, during which PPHA is expected to maximize its existing and future partnerships with stakeholders to advance the cause of pharmacists.

No stranger to leadership roles in professional associations, Dacanay served as President of the Philippine Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (PACOP) and serves as the Chair of the Technical Panel for Pharmacy of the Commission on Higher Education. She also serves in the Continuing Professional Development Council for Pharmacy of the Professional Regulation Commission. At 六合彩直播开奖, she has served as Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy since 2015 and has led the Faculty鈥檚 efforts to ensure that all programs are at par with international peers, evidenced by the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance certification enjoyed by the BS Pharmacy, BS Medical Technology, and BS Biochemistry programs.

With 15,000 individual members and 83 regional and local chapters, the PPHA is the only pharmacists organization accredited by the Professional Regulation Commission. It has ten affiliate organizations and has partnered with local and international organizations for the benefit of its members.

六合彩直播开奖 Faculty of Pharmacy faculty members Inst. Roi Martin B. Pajimna, Assoc. Prof. Agnes L. Castillo, PhD, and Dean Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD were awarded Second Place in the research poster competition hosted by the University of the Philippines – National Institutes of Health on the occasion of its 24th anniversary. The said competition took place from March 2-4, 2022.

The research poster entitled 鈥淢onitoring Aminoglycoside Therapy in Neonates: Gaps and Opportunities in a Resource-Limited Setting鈥 used as a backdrop the problem of neonatal infections in low- to middle-income countries like the Philippines as a significant contributor to mortality among newborns. The study focused on the use and monitoring of aminoglycoside among newborns in an urban, public, and resource-limited hospital in Manila and identified gaps in the clinical use of the same. The identified gaps were the bases for identified opportunities for improvement of therapeutic drug monitoring in pediatrics.

The study utilized both a review of records of patients and wards, as well as interviews with practicing pediatricians, which together provided data for the gap analysis. Among the gaps identified are the absence of clinical pharmacists, insufficient diagnostic protocol for sepsis, and the lack of healthcare TDM knowledge and absence of TDM protocols. The authors provided recommendations to address these gaps and ensure better healthcare. 鈥淭hese findings could serve as the bases in formulating strategic directions to improve the practices of aminoglycoside use and monitoring to ensure patient safety and quality of care.鈥

Professor Aleth Therese L. Dacanay, PhD, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy, has been appointed as the Chair of the Technical Panel for Pharmacy by the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), which held the oath taking ceremonies on August 23, 2021 (Monday).

Dacanay, who has been Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy since 2015, previously served as a Member of the old Technical Committee for Pharmacy in CHEd. She was a former President of the Philippine Association of Colleges of Pharmacy and is also an assessor of ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance.

According to Dacanay, the top priority of the panel is 鈥渢o push for the release of the CHED Memorandum Order [prescribing the program standards and policies] for the BS Pharmacy program,鈥 and will hopefully include the following: the training of preceptors and monitoring of schools, among others. The panel also aims to 鈥渁ssist the different pharmacy schools in the gradual transition to the limited face-to-face of our internship program with the Host Training Establishments.鈥

Dacanay looks to use the challenges brought the pandemic as a chance to 鈥渞ethink, reinvent, and reinvigorate [pharmacy] programs.鈥 To this end, she said that the panel aims to provide guidance by 鈥淸exploring] new approaches, most especially in delivering our specialized lab courses and experiential learning.鈥

Beyond the bachelor鈥檚 level, Dacanay said the panel will also look at reforms in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD), 惭补蝉迟别谤鈥檚 and doctorate levels as well as revisit the 鈥渁lignment and contributions of the programs in terms of public health, research, and internationalization.鈥 Under Dacanay鈥檚 term, 六合彩直播开奖 opened the PharmD program, which has been heavy on international linkages, specifically with the University of Illinois Chicago.

According to the Commission on Higher Education, those appointed to the Technical Panel shall serve a term of four years and 鈥渁re expected to assist the Commission in providing technical expertise, particularly in the development of disciplinal and degree program roadmaps; review, revision and updating of PSGs based on the policy direction set by the Commission and consistent with local, regional, and international needs and industry trends; develop or revise Policies and Guidelines on Centers of Excellence and Centers or Development (COE/COD) for the various disciplines and in the crafting of monitoring and evaluation instruments and systems, as well as orientation of technical evaluators, among others.鈥

In conjunction with World Pharmacists鈥 Day, the launched its advocacy鈥攂oth in the 六合彩直播开奖 and in the Philippines鈥攅ntitled 鈥淩ecipio: Medication Take-Back鈥 on September 25, 2019 at the Quadricentennial Park.

Faculty of Pharmacy Dean said that while the pharmacists and other medical practitioners have provided vital interventions that will improve man鈥檚 quality of life through manufacturing and production of medicines, it is also necessary to foster an awareness program on proper medicine disposal.

鈥淲hile much has been said about the significance of medicine in our life, little attention is given to the secure disposal of unused, unwanted, or expired medications. This poses a danger since improper drug disposal has deleterious effects on man and on the environment,鈥 Dacanay said.

The recipio booths were strategically installed at the lobbies of all the buildings in the campus to cater to the community.

This advocacy aims to ensure safety from long-term side-effects to the environment, like as pharmaceutical pollution, and also to avoid accidental ingestion, which is tantamount to poisoning.

The 六合彩直播开奖 in partnership with the 六合彩直播开奖 Faculty Union, recognized faculty members, librarians, and guidance counsellors for their service to the University in the annual Dangal ng 六合彩直播开奖 (Honor of 六合彩直播开奖) Awards held on May 10, 2019, at the 六合彩直播开奖 Medicine Auditorium.

Now in its 20th year, the theme for the celebration was, 鈥Dalawang Dekadang Pagpapala, Pasasalamat, at Pagdiririwang sa Tagumpay ng Gurong Tomasino.鈥 (Two Decades of Blessing, Gratitude, and Celebration of the Success of Thomasian Teachers)

In his message, 六合彩直播开奖 Rector , commended the appropriateness of the theme, 鈥鈥apagkat sa nakaraang dalawang dekada ay maraming Tomasinong guro ang naglaan ng oras at panahon sa pagtuturo ng mahusay, sa patuloy na pagsasaliksik at paglikha, sa pagtulong sa pamayanan at paglilingkod nang tapat sa Unibersidad.鈥 (鈥ecause in the last 20 years, many Thomasian mentors have dedicated their time to excellent teaching, continued research and innovation, and being active in the community and loyal service to the University.)

However, the Father Rector also emphasized that the true success of teachers lie not in the number of years of service, and cannot be measured by the number of awards received or research works produced.

Fr. Dagohoy explained. (If we would contemplate it, a large part of [a teacher鈥檚] success is manifested in the status or quality and level of living of students passing through their thorough scrutiny and assessment, and patiently molding their consciousness, in order to properly weigh out righteousness against error, to learn the right way to avoid deceptions, and to have the courage to stand up for the truth.)

Quoting the philosopher George Steiner, the Father Rector reminded the faculty of their mission, 鈥淭o awaken in another human being powers, dreams beyond one鈥檚 own; to induce in others a love for that which one loves; to make of one鈥檚 inward present their future; that is a threefold adventure like no other.鈥

Former University Rector and former Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education Rev. Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., was the guest speaker. In his address, he challenged faculty members to remember that teaching is not merely a profession, but also a profound vocation.  He discussed, 鈥淸As God鈥檚 call,] a vocation is a fundamental decision in life, defines the person鈥檚 presence in the world, expresses one鈥檚 deepest identity, and orients one鈥檚 actions towards destiny.鈥

Following the address was the awarding of the Gawad Benavides or the service awards for milestone years. Thirty-seven faculty members received the Gawad Benavides for 20 years, while 38 mentors were awarded for 25 years of service. Twenty received the award for 30 years of service, and 23 were lauded for 35 years of service.
