MS Microbio students bring home research poster awards for agri, envi sci papers

Two students of the Master of Science in Microbiology programs of the Graduate School brought home awards from the 11th DOST ASTHDRP Graduate Scholars Conference held from September 26-27, 2023 at the Philippine International Convention Center. The 2023 edition of the conference bore a theme calling for a “Resilient, Unified, and Sustainable Philippines.”

Prince Nur-Hakeem N. Buisan won first place for his poster entitled “Core vs. Edge Differentiation of Myxomycetes Community Assemblages in a Secondary Growth Experimental Forest in Southern Mindanao, Philippines.” This study is under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Nikki Heherson A. Dagamac, Dr. rer. nat. Buisan’s paper attempted to contribute to the otherwise limited literature on the “understanding of the dynamic influences of such factors on microorganisms” and “variations in forest disturbance gradients.” The moist chamber technique was used in the study site, Cotabato province.

Meanwhile, Ervinna M. Cruz won second place for the poster entitled: “Growth-Promoting and Protective Potential of Fungal Root Endophytes Associated with a Pioneer Grass in a Lahar-Affected Area,” which was supervised by Prof. Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat., FPAM. The study proved the ability of the “isolated fungal endophytes to protect the plant host against pathogens.” The fungal endophytes were sourced from the roots of Saccharum spontaneum L., a pioneering grass species in a lahar-strewn environment.

Professor Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat., a faculty researcher of the Department of Biological Sciences and the Graduate School, is the newest member of the Department of Education’s Teacher Education Council, a national policy-making body for basic education. Dela Cruz succeeds Analyn V. Salvador-Amores and will serve a term of three years representing Science Teachers.

In an interview with the Communications Bureau, dela Cruz opined that while not everyone is expected to pursue science or math as a career, it cannot be denied that these disciplines “are our foundation.” Dela Cruz, who has long advocated for child-friendly Science education in the basic education levels, said that “Science teaches critical thinking, and this soft skill is one what many of us need to master, especially now that our everyday is bombarded with misinformation and disinformation.”

Dela Cruz, whose team of researchers has made child-friendly materials, advocates for “[making] science enjoyable for our learners and fun to teach for our teachers. Only then will science be much appreciated and learned.”

Prior to his appointment, Dela Cruz and his research team concretized their advocacy for kids by publishing . In 2017, they likewise gathered young children in ��ϲ�ֱ�� for their .

Dela Cruz, Apurillo, Cai win NAST outstanding scientific paper award study on mangrove fungal endophytes

The research team composed of Biological Sciences Professor Thomas Edison E. Dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat., Graduate School student Carlo Chris S. Apurillo, and Chinese Academy of Sciences’s Lei Cai, recently won an Outstanding Scientific Paper award from the National Academy of Science and Technology.

The study entitled “Diversity and bioactivities of mangrove fungal endophytes from Leyte and Samar, Philippines” was published in July 2019 in Philippine Science Letters. It investigated mangrove fungal endophytes (MFEs), which are considered “viable sources of metabolites with potential antibacterial and cytotoxic properties.”

The study isolated 73 MFEs from 4 mangrove hosts in Leyte and Samar, Eastern Philippines, with “R. mucronata from Samar having the highest MFE diversity and species richness.” The undertaking provided “the first report of the MFEs from the central part of the Philippines and the discovery of potential metabolites which can be explored for pharmaceutical applications.”

Dela Cruz, Vergel of Biological Sciences awarded Pioneering Intellectual Property Programme ASEAN Young Researchers Fellowship

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz and Mr. Joseph Carlo V. Vergel, MSc, both faculty members and researchers of the Department of Biological Sciences at the College of Science, were awarded Fellows of the Pioneering Intellectual Property Programme (PIPP) for ASEAN Young Researchers.

The PIP fellows were invited to participate in a series of lectures from November 2020 to February 2021 which culminated in a workshop and commencement exercise. Each session was delivered by IP professionals from LES societies in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Austria, and Singapore, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and the European Patent Office (EPO).

Through the PIPP Fellowship, ASEAN young researchers were trained in the fundamentals of IP knowledge and engage with IP experts. Young researchers also networked with other professionals within and beyond their fields of expertise and are expected to stimulate a shift towards an academic culture that promotes interactions between scientists, industry, and business/investors.

ASEAN PIPP is the flagship programme of the ASEAN Young Scientists Network (ASEAN YSN) in collaboration with the Licensing Executives Society International (LESI), particularly its Industry-University-Government Transactions (IUGT) Committee. Through this initiative, ASEAN YSN and LESI hope to create a pool of IP-competent ASEAN researchers who will champion Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) in the region.

In recognition of the role that research plays in sustaining economic growth and societal well-being in the region, many Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States have made significant investments to enhance their science and technological capacity. A nation’s research progress is often determined through quantifiable metrics such as the size of the technology talent pool, number of research institutions, publications, and patents. Young researchers play an important role in the STI landscape. They possess expertise and experience and adapt to the rapid changing nature of STI. Young scientists are also future leaders who can influence relevant policies on the implementation of STI to effectively address societal needs.

People who want to know more about slime molds (myxomycetes) in the Philippines now have a one-stop-shop portal: . The Fungal Biodiversity, Ecogenomics, and Systematics (FBeS) research group of the launched today its new website, presenting the must-knows about our local slime molds, related publications and studies, an image gallery, as well as educational materials that can be used to teach children.

, lead researcher and a faculty member of the Department of Biological Sciences, said the project began on March 4, 2020, when sophomore BSc Microbiology students Marcus Lorenzo Acot, Patricia Denise Crisostomo, Boram Kim, and Jordan Jeffrey Marquis accept their professor’s invitation to help create the site.

The portal helps put together what ��ϲ�ֱ�� has been able to contribute to myxomycetes research in the country. According to Dela Cruz, from a count of 107 species in 1981, the FBeS group and their colleagues have helped increase the list to the present-day 158.

Din, Dela Cruz of GS, RCNAS win best poster for study comparing soil, mound, and termites

Graduate student Hannah Jane F. Din and her adviser, of the Fungal Biodiversity, Ecogenomics, and Systematics Group of the won the Best Poster Paper award (Professional Category) during the 12th Regional Convention and Scientific Meeting of the Philippine Society for Microbiology, Inc. – Bicol Chapter. The event took place from February 21-22, 2020, in Legazpi, Albay.

The winning paper was entitled “Soil, Mound or Termites: Which carry the greatest number of fungi?” It determined “the fungal communities found within the termite mounds and those attached to the termite bodies.” The study “also compared these fungal communities with those found in soil adjacent to the mounds. The soil samples and termite specimens of Macrotermes gilvus were collected from six mounds within Ninoy Aquino Wildlife Park in Quezon City.”

Din and dela Cruz’s study isolated a total number of 57 fungal strains, which could be grouped into 31 morphospecies. The highest number of morphospecies were recorded from termites, followed by soil and mound.” The study “the first to look at termite-associated fungi in the Philippines.”

Dela Cruz receives Outstanding Microbiologist Award from PSM

��ϲ�ֱ�� Resident Researcher and faculty member , was conferred the Outstanding Microbiologist Award by the Philippine Society of Microbiology (PSM) in a ceremony held on July 18, 2019. The award was given during the PSM’s 48th Annual Convention and Scientific Meeting, held from July 18 to 19, 2019, at the Clark Marriott Hotel in Pampanga.

With the theme “Promoting One Health through Microbiology Education, Research, and Practice,” the convention aimed to promote “a collaborative, multi-sector, and trans-disciplinary approach working at the local, regional, national, and global levels” to attain optimal health outcomes. Essential in the One Health approach are microbial tracking and surveillance, which are useful in addressing the efforts against antibiotic resistance.

As inscribed in the plaque presented to Dela Cruz, he was awarded “for his exemplary research contributions to the field of microbiology, particularly on mycology, and his outstanding dedication to the promotion of microbiology in the country.”

Dela Cruz was awarded the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) Outstanding Young Scientist in the field of mycology in 2012 and The World Academy of Sciences Prize for Young Scientist in the Philippines – Biology in 2014. He was named a Metrobank Outstanding Teacher in 2015. In 2017, he became the first Filipino to receive the American Society of Microbiology (ASM) Graduate Microbiology Teaching Award.

With more than 85 published research papers on fungal biodiversity, ecogenomics and systematics including fungal applications in agriculture, health and the environment in the last 12 years, his research group is at the forefront of fungal research in the country. Dela Cruz has conducted research fellowships in Germany, Austria, China, and the United States. He holds a rank of Professor 5, the youngest in the University to be given such honor.

A total of 121 faculty members were recognized in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Science and Technology, and Sacred Sciences by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation during the Recognition Program held on March 16, 2018 at the Paredes Building, ��ϲ�ֱ��. They were granted the Gold Series Award and the Silver Series Award for AY 2014 to 2016 and the International Publications Award for AY 2014-2017. ��ϲ�ֱ�� Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation , assisted by the directors of the respective research centers gave the awards.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the ��ϲ�ֱ�� as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

The International Publications Award is presented to all full time faculty members teaching only in ��ϲ�ֱ�� for the publication of their research outputs in journal/s and books indexed in the Web of Science/ Scopus with IF Quartile Metrics Ranking. According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. “Ang dignidad ng guro ay nakabase sa kanyang atas, sa kanyang mandato, sa kanyang responsibilidad; samakatuwid, sa kanyang tungkuling ginagampanan: ang paghubog sa mga kamalayan upang masusing timbangin ang katwiran at turuan ang mag-aaral kung papaano umiwas sa panlilinlang, manindigan sa katotohanan, at ipaglaban ang katarungan.”

“Ang saligan ng dignidad ng pagiging guro ay ayon sa antas ng kanyang pagtupad sa atas na iginagawad sa kanya; ito ang nag-aangat sa guro. Ginagawa siyang kakaiba at nagtatangi sa kanya sa ibang mga larangan,” Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in ��ϲ�ֱ�� as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. “Sila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,” he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle “repeater sections” and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: “Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa ��ϲ�ֱ��.”

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ��, except the Gawad Benavides).
