Dean Escolar Chua, Llanes of Nursing appointed to CHED technical evaluators team for nursing education

Dean Rowena L. Escolar Chua, PhD and Assoc. Prof. Mila Delia Llanes, PhD of the College of Nursing were named to the newly reconstituted Technical Evaluators for Nursing Education group of the Commission on Higher Education, which confirmed the appointment on January 21, 2022.

According to Dean Escolar Chua, being a Center of Excellence in Nursing Education, the “��ϲ�ֱ�� College of Nursing is in a very strategic position to contribute valuable insights to the programs and policies as set by the Commission on Higher Education.” Localizing her appointment to the current pandemic, Escolar Chua said that “with nurses being at the forefront of healthcare, it is crucial…to ensure that nursing education will adapt to the changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and digital classroom.”

Meanwhile, Llanes recognizes that with the pandemic ushering in new ways of delivering instruction, the way this transition was navigation has substantially varied across nursing schools in the country. “Topmost in our minds is to maintain integrity and ethical standards in performing our duty to evaluate and monitor nursing programs offered by various tertiary institutions. Thus, we envision a team that is guided by integrity, truthfulness, transparency, and accountability.”

The technical evaluators, who will assess the quality of education provided by nursing schools in the country, compose one of the bodies of experts recently reconstituted by CHED. Meanwhile, the other body, the technical panel, deals more with policy formulation. According to CHED Administrative Order 03, Series of 2019, the group of Technical Evaluators consists of 10 members, with representatives from private higher education institutions with Autonomous or Deregulated Status, such as ��ϲ�ֱ��.

Escolar Chua is no stranger to quality assurance procedures, being one of the country’s assessors serving in the ASEAN University Network Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) group. Llanes is also a noted figure in the profession, having served as President of the Philippine Nurses Association. The College’s Nursing program is a Level IV program recognized by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities Commission on Accreditation, enjoys the Center of Excellence status from the Commission on Higher Education, and is certified by the AUN-QA.

Nursing spearheads online course on health innovation with Asian counterparts

The University’s College of Nursing spearheaded a six-week online course on Health Innovation as part of the College’s Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) initiatives. From October 22 to November 26, 2021, international students and faculty enrolled in Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacy, Psychology, and Engineering participated in the six-week online course to create a health innovation project to address the different health challenges affecting the ASEAN region during this COVID 19 pandemic. The University organized the course in collaboration with St. Louis College Bangkok Thailand, King Mongkut University of Technology North Bangkok Thailand, Widya Mandala Surabaya Catholic University Indonesia, Institute of Technology and Health Bali Indonesia, and St. Mary’s College, Fukuoka, Japan.

The COIL on Health Innovation aims to promote, integrate, and enhance the international education experiences of students and faculty through interdisciplinary collaborative online learning activities. Students and faculty participated in asynchronous and synchronous sessions on Design Thinking to identify health problems affecting all countries and generate solutions by creating a health innovation project. The health innovation prototype created by the students with the faculty was presented in the final pitch competition.

Asst. Prof. Ritzmond F. Loa, PhD, RN, International Relations Coordinator of the College of Nursing, initiated the COIL on Health Innovation in collaboration with international partner institutions as part of the “internationalization at home” programs utilizing Enriched Virtual Mode of instruction at the College of Nursing.

Dean Rowena L. Escolar Chua, PhD, RN stated that innovation is crucial in the health sector to advance nursing practice, education, and research. Moreover, she added that the COIL course can enhance the collaborative and communication skills of students needed in the 21st century.

Reflecting on the course, Renne Kristine Banzon, a BS Nursing student, stated that “My experience with COIL has pushed me to be more confident in my communication skills. It has opened my eyes to other cultures unique to mine, and taught me to be a global citizen of peace and change.”

Dean Escolar Chua of Nursing delivers keynote speech in AsPac Bioethics Education Network conference

Professor Rowena L. Escolar Chua, PhD, Dean of the College of Nursing, was one of the keynote speakers in the May 27-30, 2021 Asia Pacific Bioethics Education Network (APBEN) Conference, hosted this year by Deakin University, Australia.

In her keynote speech entitled “Moral distress in nursing education: How should educators respond?”, Dean Escolar Chua acknowledged how the pandemic and its consequent restrictions on mobility have forced “nursing educators…to rapidly change their way of working to manage remote teaching and learning, often with little lead-time. While some educators have been positive, responsive, and solution-focused, for many this transition has not been easy, particularly in areas where there is limited connectivity.”

Dean Escolar Chua reiterated the “common belief among nurse educators is that if skills are not practiced onsite, then it is not effective teaching nor learning.” This belief has caused many to “feel worried about their students not being on track with their learning and that they won’t have the right skills and knowledge to manage to learn remotely. Moreover, balancing work and personal demands is challenging. Some teachers lose their confidence and feel frustrated and isolated causing them to experience moral distress.”

Despite these grim realities, Dean Escolar Chua said that “this pandemic brings a vast array of opportunities on how to foster nursing educators’ wellbeing that encourages building and strengthening caring relationships with one another and with their students and prioritize designing and sustaining classrooms where everyone feels emotionally and physically safe and supported.”

A Full Professor of the University, Dean Escolar Chua holds a doctorate in development studies and has recently been studying experiences of moral distress, moral sensitivity, and moral courage among Philippine nursing students especially during the time of the pandemic.

Nursing embraces new normal with 14 webinars on nursing education and practice

In the wake of the COVID 19 pandemic, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� embraced digitised education driven by the current public health situation and government restrictions to face-to-face learning. The College of Nursing has shown flexibility and innovation through collaboration with international HEIs, service industry partners, and stakeholders to enriched virtual mode of instruction that will contribute to Thomasian graduate attributes of being effective communicators and collaborators. The unified efforts of the administration, coordinators, faculty, and the active participation of students transformed remote online teaching as a vibrant hub for sharing knowledge, integrating best practices from international partners, promoting intercultural competence, and sustaining connections with its alumni all over the globe.

Since the start of academic year 2020, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� organized a series of webinars for the Thomasian Nursing community. Foreign experts, nurse practitioners, and alumni from international partner HEIs and other healthcare organizations delivered lectures on a variety of health topics relevant to the current nursing courses. The webinars were offered to the Thomasian Nursing community at no cost and lasted for one to two hours.

“I’m happy to have the opportunity to attend this webinar with nurse leaders from all over the globe. They are truly inspirational and really have helped me in my motivation to be a nurse leader,” a third-year nursing student said after attending the webinar last September.

Aside from monthly webinars, five (5) junior nursing students participated in the short-term Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) program on Community Health Nursing. Students from different institutions worked over a one-month period to develop competencies in assessing, diagnosing, and planning community health programs that address local and global health issues. “It was new experience for me because I get to meet and work together with another student from another country despite of the pandemic” A participant said. These international webinars and COIL were organized in response to the ��ϲ�ֱ�� College of Nursing commitment to form competent, compassionate Thomasian nurses committed to the service of the church, the nation, and the global community.

The partner institutions for the month-long COIL are St. Louis College, Bangkok, Thailand (November 13); Institute of Technology and Health, Bali, Indonesia (November 20), and Widya Mandala Catholic University, Surabaya, Indonesia (December 4). The ��ϲ�ֱ�� hosted the third session of the COIL (November 27).

��ϲ�ֱ�� recognizes research achievements of faculty

A total of 121 faculty members were recognized in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Science and Technology, and Sacred Sciences by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation during the Recognition Program held on March 16, 2018 at the Paredes Building, ��ϲ�ֱ��. They were granted the Gold Series Award and the Silver Series Award for AY 2014 to 2016 and the International Publications Award for AY 2014-2017. ��ϲ�ֱ�� Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation , assisted by the directors of the respective research centers gave the awards.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the ��ϲ�ֱ�� as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

Under the Creative Works Category, the awardee should be a tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least three creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

International Publications Award (2014–2017)

The International Publications Award is presented to all full time faculty members teaching only in ��ϲ�ֱ�� for the publication of their research outputs in journal/s and books indexed in the Web of Science/ Scopus with IF Quartile Metrics Ranking. Author byline should indicate the ��ϲ�ֱ�� as address in the publication.
