The 六合彩直播开奖 Research and Endowment Foundation Inc. (REFI) won a P16.5 million grant recently to conduct an action research project on environmental conservation and ecotourism in Siquijor province.

六合彩直播开奖 REFI was awarded the grant by the Gerry Roxas Foundation (GRF) and the Philippine office of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for the project titled 鈥淪iquijor Island Conservation and Restoration: Toward a Regenerative Ecotourism Destination鈥.

This action research project was among 11 recipients of grants from GRF鈥檚 program called INSPIRE or Investing in Sustainable Partnerships for Inclusive Growth and Regenerative Ecosystems.

Looking at both seascapes and landscapes, the project aims to ensure that the island鈥檚 natural ecosystems 鈥渨ill be conserved and restored, leading to a sustainable and regenerative Siquijor Island鈥. For 2.5 years, this action research project hopes to aid Siquijor鈥檚 collaborative governance efforts on environmental protection, environmental conservation education, and achieving community-based sustainable livelihood.

The project seeks to empower Siquijor鈥檚 provincial and municipal governments to regulate the use of trees and medicinal plants, curb illegal and unregulated fishing activities, encourage tourism development, reduce solid and liquid wastes, and control freshwater consumption. These efforts contribute to the vision of making Siquijor a 鈥渮ero-waste island鈥.

A team from REFI will spearhead the project, led by Executive Director Fr. Maximo Gatela, O.P. and Technical Team Leader Dr. Moises Norman Garcia of the College of Science. Team members include Dr. Maria Rosario Virginia Cobar-Garcia (Science), Dr. Arlen Ancheta and Dr. Alain Jomarie Santos (both from the Faculty of Arts and Letters), as well as Asst. Prof. Arnold Distor and Asst. Prof. Racquel Layco (Science).

Dr. Ancheta, Dr. Cobar-Garcia, Dr. Garcia, and Asst. Prof. Layco had done studies on the zero-waste island concept, covering solid waste management, energy efficiency, food and water, and sustainable use of natural resources. These previous studies were conducted for a global advocacy group, the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA), under the auspices of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (or RCSSED, 六合彩直播开奖鈥檚 social sciences research arm).

According to team leader Dr. Moises Norman Garcia, the previous studies and the current INSPIRE-funded project will capitalize on 鈥渆nvironmental advocacy to counter climate change and [take inspiration from] Pope Francis鈥檚 encyclical Laudato S铆.鈥

This INSPIRE-funded project contributes to climate change action, says this full professor of Biological Sciences, by directly aligning the project to some of the sustainable development goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

六合彩直播开奖 REFI formalized its receipt of the INSPIRE grants during a May 22 grants awarding ceremony at the National Museum of Natural History, with the US Ambassador to the Philippines, Her Excellency Mary Kay L. Carlson, gracing the event.

Academic researchers from the 六合彩直播开奖 Research Center for Social Sciences and Education presented data-based policy recommendations to lawmakers and officials of Congress in its first Policy Expo held on March 3 and 7, 2023, as part of the Research Fortnight. Listening to the researchers were Cong. Ralph Wendel P. Tulfo (Quezon City – District 2), Prof. Erwin V. Lara (Congress Secretariat), Dr. Romulo Emmanuel M. Miral (Congressional Policy and Budget Research Department), and Cong. Romeo S. Momo, Sr. (Surigao del Sur – District 1).

With the intent to 鈥渂alance the scholarly and policy dimensions of social science research鈥 and in an attempt to address 鈥淧hilippine socio-economic and education issues,鈥 the RCSSED, specifically its newly minted Research Utilization Unit, provided the platform for researchers to use their study鈥檚 recommendations as bases for policy. Among the possibilities are inclusion as bases for bills and ordinances, among others.

The presenters were the following: Sr. Teacher Philippe Jose S. Hernandez (Social Health Studies); Prof. Moises Norman Z. Garcia, PhD (Sustainability Studies); Assoc. Prof. Ronaldo R. Cabauatan, PhD (Business Studies); Prof. Noel G. Asiones, PhD (Church and Society); Asst. Prof. Carol Geraldine C. Pablo, MSc (Social Health Studies); Asst. Prof. Frederick I. Rey, PhD (Politics and Public Policy); Prof. Rachelle B. Lintao, PhD (Language Studies); Asst. Prof. Jeremaiah M. Opiniano, PhD (Community-Engaged Studies); Asst. Prof. Joreen T. Rocamora, PhD (former academic researcher and incumbent Office of Public Affairs Director); Prof. Arlen A. Ancheta, PhD (Sustainability Studies); and Prof. Evelyn A. Songco, PhD (Education and Leadership).

The RCSSED鈥檚 Research Utilization Unit, headed by Rey, anchors itself on three pillars: life and dignity (buhay at dangal); human rights (karapatang pantao); and democracy (demokrasya). According to RCSSED Director Jeremaiah Opiniano, the Center aims to have more regular engagements with policy makers in the future and expressed openness to having the researchers work on topics/issues of interest to the local legislators and officials.

The 六合彩直播开奖 in partnership with the 六合彩直播开奖 Faculty Union, recognized faculty members, librarians, and guidance counsellors for their service to the University in the annual Dangal ng 六合彩直播开奖 (Honor of 六合彩直播开奖) Awards held on May 10, 2019, at the 六合彩直播开奖 Medicine Auditorium.

Now in its 20th year, the theme for the celebration was, 鈥Dalawang Dekadang Pagpapala, Pasasalamat, at Pagdiririwang sa Tagumpay ng Gurong Tomasino.鈥 (Two Decades of Blessing, Gratitude, and Celebration of the Success of Thomasian Teachers)

In his message, 六合彩直播开奖 Rector , commended the appropriateness of the theme, 鈥鈥apagkat sa nakaraang dalawang dekada ay maraming Tomasinong guro ang naglaan ng oras at panahon sa pagtuturo ng mahusay, sa patuloy na pagsasaliksik at paglikha, sa pagtulong sa pamayanan at paglilingkod nang tapat sa Unibersidad.鈥 (鈥ecause in the last 20 years, many Thomasian mentors have dedicated their time to excellent teaching, continued research and innovation, and being active in the community and loyal service to the University.)

However, the Father Rector also emphasized that the true success of teachers lie not in the number of years of service, and cannot be measured by the number of awards received or research works produced.

Fr. Dagohoy explained. (If we would contemplate it, a large part of [a teacher鈥檚] success is manifested in the status or quality and level of living of students passing through their thorough scrutiny and assessment, and patiently molding their consciousness, in order to properly weigh out righteousness against error, to learn the right way to avoid deceptions, and to have the courage to stand up for the truth.)

Quoting the philosopher George Steiner, the Father Rector reminded the faculty of their mission, 鈥淭o awaken in another human being powers, dreams beyond one鈥檚 own; to induce in others a love for that which one loves; to make of one鈥檚 inward present their future; that is a threefold adventure like no other.鈥

Former University Rector and former Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education Rev. Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., was the guest speaker. In his address, he challenged faculty members to remember that teaching is not merely a profession, but also a profound vocation.  He discussed, 鈥淸As God鈥檚 call,] a vocation is a fundamental decision in life, defines the person鈥檚 presence in the world, expresses one鈥檚 deepest identity, and orients one鈥檚 actions towards destiny.鈥

Following the address was the awarding of the Gawad Benavides or the service awards for milestone years. Thirty-seven faculty members received the Gawad Benavides for 20 years, while 38 mentors were awarded for 25 years of service.
