MS Chemistry students win awards for biological, health sciences paper, poster presentations

Three Master of Science in Chemistry students of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School brought home awards for research poster and oral presentations exhibited during the 11th DOST ASTHDRP Graduate Scholars Conference held from September 26-27, 2023 at the Philippine International Convention Center. The 2023 edition of the conference bore a theme calling for a “Resilient, Unified, and Sustainable Philippines.”

For the research poster awards, Gabriel Luis L. Neri and Hannah Joy C. Drapisa won the first- and third-place awards, respectively. Neri’s work was entitled “Synthetic Electrophilic Cyclopent-2-enone Conjugates Modulate Nrf2 Release and Inhibit NF-κB/IL-6 In Vitro,” under the supervision of Prof. Allan Patrick G. Macabeo, Dr. rer. nat.

Drapisa, also under the supervision of Macabeo, worked on the study entitled “Isolation and Structure Elucidation of Anti-staphylococcal Secondary Metabolites from the Endophytic Fungus of Uvaria grandiflora, Epicoccum nigrum.”

For the oral research presentation, Zaira Fe C. Castañares won third place for the paper “Isolation, Structure Elucidation and Biological Assessment of a New Isochroman Compound from the Endophytic Fungus, Hypoxylon lividipigmentum.” Macabeo is also the adviser of this third award-winning paper.

Neri won first place for the research poster presentation for the Biological and Health Sciences category.

Drapisa won third place for the research poster presentation for the Biological and Health Sciences category.

Castañares won third place for the oral research presentation for Biological and Health Sciences.

International Collaboration on Toxicology and Pharmacology

With the aim to bring fresh insights and updated information on pharmacology and toxicology research, the Faculty of Pharmacy and the College of Science of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� and the Chung Yuan Christian University – Taiwan will organize a joint international webinar series entitled “International Collaboration on Toxicology and Pharmacology” on April 6-7, 2022 via Google Meet.

On the first day, Prof. Ross D. Vasquez, PhD of the Department of Pharmacy and the Research Center for Natural and Applied Sciences (RCNAS) will lecture on “Alpinumisoflavone and Syringin as promising anti-cancer drug leads: Molecular docking in vitro studies and drug-likeness profiling”, while Prof. Kelvin H.C. Chen of the National Pingtung University of Taiwan will lecture on “Functional peptide preparation and application”. Finally, Prof. Allan Patrick G. Macabeo, Dr. rer. nat. of the Department of Chemistry and RCNAS will lecture on “Downplaying NF-kB activation in RAW 264.7 macrophages as a promising strategy to discover anti-inflammatory agents: The case of flavonoids from Uvaria Alba”.

Prof. Chung-Der Hsiao of the Chung Yuan Christian University – Taiwan will serve as the moderator of this session.

On the second day, Prof. Chung-Der Hsiao of the Chung Yuan Christian University – Taiwan will lecture on “How deep learning can be beneficial for zebrafish toxicology and pharmacology studies”; while Prof. Chia-Hung Yen of the Kaohsiung Medical University will lecture on “Combination of plant extract libraries, high-throughput screening platforms and molecular networking analysis for accelerating natural product drug discovery and nutritional supplement development”; and lastly, Prof. Yu-Heng Lai of the Chinese Culture University of Taiwan will lecture on “Zebrafish: An excellent model for toxicology and pharmacology”.

Assoc. Prof. Agnes Castillo, PhD of the Department of Pharmacy and RCNAS will serve as the moderator for this session.

Macabeo of Chemistry, RCNAS secures Humboldt fellowship grant for drug discovery

Dr. Allan Patrick Macabeo, a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry, is one of the first recipients of the Digital Cooperation Fellowship grant of the Humboldt Foundation, of which he is an alumnus under the Alexander von Humboldt George Forster Postdoctoral Fellowship program.

Macabeo’s project, entitled “Drug discovery of biologically active natural products from Philippine Hypoxlon Species,” will be a collaboration between ��ϲ�ֱ�� as the Home Institution and the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research in Germany, represented by Prof. Dr. Marc Stadler, as Virtual Host Collaborator.

The project will look into “untapped fungal natural products from Philippine Hypoxylaceae,” which when studied is seen to increase the chances of finding novel antibiotic compounds. The need for new chemotherapeutic treatments has been highlighted by the “rapid development of drug-resistant strains.”

The virtual collaborative work aims to find new secondary metabolites with potent antibiotic properties and will last from September 2021 to January 2022, provides Georg Forster Humboldt alumni from “developing and emerging countries who are facing multiple challenges during the long-lasting pandemic. Macabeo’s project will receive a lump-sum amount of 3,000 EUR per month.

Macabeo becomes one of the first recipients of the newly created Digital Cooperation Fellowship grant of the Humboldt Foundation, which also receives funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.

Macabeo of Chemistry, RCNAS leads team in doing computational modeling to hasten drug development to fight COVID-19

Full Professor of the led a team of researchers from the ��ϲ�ֱ�� in collaborating with researchers from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China to create computational models to screen compounds found in SARS-CoV2, which causes the COVID-19 pandemic that has put the most of the world to a standstill. Macabeo led the ��ϲ�ֱ�� contingent, composed of Mark Andrew O. Mendoza, Justin Allen K. Lim, Jehiel Karsten H. Ong, and Luis Agustin E. Pilapil (); Kin Israel R. Notarte, Adriel M. Pastrana, and Rey Arturo Fernandez (); Mark Tristan J. Quimque and Rhenz Alfred D. Liman (). Joining them from Shanghai were Abbas Khan and Dong-Qing Wei.

With the aim of finding potential drug candidates to combat SARS-CoV2, the “study focused on the exploitation of fungal secondary metabolites with profound antiviral activity on a range of known pathogenic viruses such as the human immunodeficiency virus, influenza virus, herpes simplex virus, and hepatitis C virus – as potential drug prototypes against the SARS-CoV2 virus.”

Citing the fact that nearly half a million have died of COVID-19 “because of complications and lack of therapeutic regimens,” Macabeo said the team was inspired to perform a “computational-driven research that enabled the screening of compounds previously obtained from fungi against enzymes/protein playing important role on viral infectivity and virulence of SARS-CoV2.” Through bioinformatics and computational modelling, they were able to identify compounds that can potentially hamper the attachment, replication, protein maturation and even host immunity evasion potential of SARS-CoV2. These viral mechanisms, according to Macabeo, are important virulent factors that ascertain the successful invasion and infectivity of the said virus. Furthermore, if researchers “can inhibit the enzymes and proteins essential for these mechanisms to happen, then [they] might be able to shut down the infectivity and pathogenicity of SARS-CoV2.”

Macabeo and his fellow researchers “were able to fish out compounds from the antifungal library pool with promising anti-COVID properties under virtual conditions.” Through molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, and pharmacokinetic analysis, they point to the “in vitro and in vivo promise of these compounds for the discovery and development of anti-COVID drugs.” Specifically, they found “five compounds with promising anti-COVID properties in silico. Of note, quinadoline B, a fungal-derived natural product, was found to inhibit all five target proteins and enzymes in SARS-CoV2. Given the promising activity of quinadoline B, this prompted us to do a further study, particularly doing structural iterations of this compound to improve its antiviral and pharmacokinetic properties.”

The project was a collaboration between Thomasian scientists and experts from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in China. For this particular project, Chinese collaborators helped in performing molecular dynamics simulations for the lead compounds that the Thomasians identified through molecular docking and in silico ADMET profiling. The computer-assisted technologies provided by the Shanghai researchers helped validate the in silico results. At present, the study remains to be “one of the few computational studies that primarily tested secondary metabolites from fungi against SARS-CoV2.”

��ϲ�ֱ��, CYCU-Taiwan hold 2nd joint symposium on chemical sciences

From September 26-27, 2019, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� and Chung Yuan Christian University – Taiwan held its Second Joint Symposium on Chemical Sciences, at ��ϲ�ֱ��’s Central Laboratory Auditorium. The event bore the theme “Recent Innovations in Chemical Sciences for a Better Life,” and brought together the two universities’ scientists to present frontiers of chemistry and allied sciences.

Gathering over 100 attendees from different academic, government, and industry sectors, the second symposium updating the participants on the advances in polymers; materials science; nanotechnology; green, computational, medicinal, synthetic, and organic chemistry; and opening up possibilities of engaging them in meaningful collaborations.

The symposium held both plenary and poster presentation sessions over the two days.

The collaboration with CYCU began in 2010, when the first Memorandum of Understanding was first signed. Since then, CYCU has hosted ��ϲ�ֱ��’s Engineering, Physics, and Chemistry students for internship, as well as alumni and faculty for postgraduate studies.

A two-year joint project between Prof. Jui-Ming Yeh and was also finished in 2017, resulting in a number of international joint publications and theses topics of undergraduate and graduate students.

138 faculty members receive distinction at 20th Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ�� Awards

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� in partnership with the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Faculty Union, recognized faculty members, librarians, and guidance counsellors for their service to the University in the annual Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ�� (Honor of ��ϲ�ֱ��) Awards held on May 10, 2019, at the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Medicine Auditorium.

Now in its 20th year, the theme for the celebration was, “Dalawang Dekadang Pagpapala, Pasasalamat, at Pagdiririwang sa Tagumpay ng Gurong Tomasino.” (Two Decades of Blessing, Gratitude, and Celebration of the Success of Thomasian Teachers)

In his message, ��ϲ�ֱ�� Rector , commended the appropriateness of the theme, “…sapagkat sa nakaraang dalawang dekada ay maraming Tomasinong guro ang naglaan ng oras at panahon sa pagtuturo ng mahusay, sa patuloy na pagsasaliksik at paglikha, sa pagtulong sa pamayanan at paglilingkod nang tapat sa Unibersidad.” (…because in the last 20 years, many Thomasian mentors have dedicated their time to excellent teaching, continued research and innovation, and being active in the community and loyal service to the University.)

However, the Father Rector also emphasized that the true success of teachers lie not in the number of years of service, and cannot be measured by the number of awards received or research works produced.

“Kung susuriing mabuti, malaking bahagi ng kanyang tagumpay ay mamamalas sa kinalalagyan, o kalidad at antas ng pamumuhay ng mga magaaral na dumaan sa kanyang masusing pagtitistis at pagtatasa, at matiyagang paghuhubog sa kanilang mga kamalayan, upang maayos na matimbang ang katuwiran laban sa kamalian, matutuhan ang tamang paraan kung paano umiwas sa mga panlilinlang, at magkaroon ng lakas ng loob na manindigan sa katotohanan,” Fr. Dagohoy explained. (If we would contemplate it, a large part of [a teacher’s] success is manifested in the status or quality and level of living of students passing through their thorough scrutiny and assessment, and patiently molding their consciousness, in order to properly weigh out righteousness against error, to learn the right way to avoid deceptions, and to have the courage to stand up for the truth.)

Quoting the philosopher George Steiner, the Father Rector reminded the faculty of their mission, “To awaken in another human being powers, dreams beyond one’s own; to induce in others a love for that which one loves; to make of one’s inward present their future; that is a threefold adventure like no other.”

Former University Rector and former Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education Rev. Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., was the guest speaker. In his address, he challenged faculty members to remember that teaching is not merely a profession, but also a profound vocation. He discussed, “[As God’s call,] a vocation is a fundamental decision in life, defines the person’s presence in the world, expresses one’s deepest identity, and orients one’s actions towards destiny.”

Following the address was the awarding of the Gawad Benavides or the service awards for milestone years. Thirty-seven faculty members received the Gawad Benavides for 20 years, while 38 mentors were awarded for 25 years of service. Twenty received the award for 30 years of service, and 23 were lauded for 35 years of service.

For 40 years of service in the University, eight were recognized, namely: ., from the ; Asst. Prof. Carmelita Cardona and Assoc. Prof. Rodolfo Rabor from the ; Prof. Ma. Corazon Zaida Gamilla, M.D., Prof. Josephine Lumitao, M.D., and Assoc. Prof. Edgardo Orlina, M.D., from the ; Assoc. Prof. Ma. Rebecca Penafiel from the ; and Assoc. Prof. Evangeline Timbang from the . Dr. Gamilla gave the response on behalf of all awardees.

The Gawad San Alberto Magno, a special award for outstanding published research, was given to , of the Faculty of Pharmacy under the Health Sciences category (Immunology of a Fap2 peptide mimotope of Fusobacterium nucleatum and its potential use in the diagnosis of colorectal cancer); Asst. Prof. Andrea G. Vargas, Ph.D., of the Faculty of Pharmacy under the Science and Technology category (Cloning molecular analysis, and developmental expression of 3 oleosin cDNA isoforms in coconut [Cocos nucifera L.]); and Assoc. Prof. Moises Norman Z. Garcia, Ph.D., and Assoc. Prof. Maria Rosario Virginia C. Garcia, Ph.D., of the under the Social Sciences and Education category (The Environmental Literacy of Elementary School Teachers based in the City of Manila and Nueva Ecija Province). , of the under the Humanities and Cultural Studies category and for outstanding publication, namely, for his research work “Ang Tagalabas sa Panitikan” while his book “Ang Nawawala” earned him the Outstanding Book award under the Humanities and Cultural Studies category.

The Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz is given to those with outstanding achievements or are recognized in the national or international scene. The awardees were: College of Science mentors , who received the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award and ., who was named 2018 Outstanding Young Scientist in Pharmaceutical Sciences by the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines, and Novartis Next Generation Scientist by the Novartis Pharma Switzerland; Faculty of Arts and Letters mentor Mr. Paul A. Castillo who won the third place in the Talaang Ginto Makata ng Taon 2018 given by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino; faculty member and Director who was named Greatest Individual for Education Inclusion in the 2017 Edu Tech Asia Awards by the EduTech Asia / Terrapin; Faculty of Pharmacy Dean , who was named ‘Outstanding Pharmacist’ in the 2018 Outstanding Professional of the Year Award by the Professional Regulation Commission; and Dean Prof. Patricia M. Empleo, Ph.D., who was named to the Global Accounting ‘Hall of Fame’ by the Institute of Certified Management Accountant.

��ϲ�ֱ�� recognizes research achievements of faculty

A total of 121 faculty members were recognized in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Science and Technology, and Sacred Sciences by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation during the Recognition Program held on March 16, 2018 at the Paredes Building, ��ϲ�ֱ��. They were granted the Gold Series Award and the Silver Series Award for AY 2014 to 2016 and the International Publications Award for AY 2014-2017. ��ϲ�ֱ�� Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation , assisted by the directors of the respective research centers gave the awards.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the ��ϲ�ֱ�� as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

Under the Creative Works Category, the awardee should be a tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least three creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

International Publications Award (2014–2017)

The International Publications Award is presented to all full time faculty members teaching only in ��ϲ�ֱ�� for the publication of their research outputs in journal/s and books indexed in the Web of Science/ Scopus with IF Quartile Metrics Ranking. Science students’ researches win in Young Systematic Biologists Forum in Bacolod

BSc Biology students from the College of Science won awards in the Young Systematic Biologists Forum held in conjunction with the 35th Symposium and Annual Meeting of the Association of Systematic Biologists of the Philippines, from May 28-31, 2017 in the University of St. La Salle, Bacolod City.

Winning First Place for the study “Molecular phylogeny of selected Philippine Ophiorrhiza L. [Ophiorrhizeae-Rubiaceae] including two new endemic species” were Neil Joseph Lee, Christian Alvin T. Arca, Ana Maria Rosella D. Carreon, Ricardo T. Jalipa III, and Niña Kathryn G. Alfeche, under the advisory of Prof. Grecebio Jonathan D. Alejandro, Dr. rer. nat.

��ϲ�ֱ�� students likewise clinched the top two spots in the Research Poster contest. Winning first place was Elfritzson Peralta, under their advisers Prof. Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD and Mr. Jonathan Carlo Briones, PhD of ��ϲ�ֱ��, Dr. Francis Magbanua of University of the Philippines – Diliman, and Dr. Noboru Okuda of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Japan. They worked on the study “Taxonomic Sufficiency: Implications from ecological studies on aquatic insects in Philippine watersheds.”

Winning 2nd Best Research Poster Award in the same event were Joe Alvin H. Chua, Tim Eric Dave B. Bautista, Alyssa Marie A. Lola, Marie Stephanie L. Macalino, Jay Edneil C. Olivar, and Hidenori S. Tomimatsu. They worked on the study “Utilization of high performance liquid chromatography [HPLC] and barcoding for the authentication of Ehretia microphylla Lam. [Tsaang gubat] and Blumea balsanifera L. [Sambong] derived products.” They were advised by Prof. Allan Patrick G. Macabeo, Dr. rer. nat. and Prof. Grecebio Jonathan D. Alejandro, Dr. rer. nat.

��ϲ�ֱ�� honors faculty members at 18th Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ�� Awards

With the theme “Gurong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad” (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ�� (Honor of ��ϲ�ֱ��) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

“Napakalaki ang nagawa at naiambag ng mg Tomasinong guro sa mga ma-tagumpay na Tomasino. Sigurado ako na kabilang kayo sa inspirasyon ng mga mag-aaral sa kanilang pagsusumikap na makamit at matupad ang kanilang mga pangarap. Hindi lamang iyan maliit na bagay,” Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message. “Pinapatunayan ito ng napakaraming mahuhusay at kapuri-puring indibidwal na mula sa iba’t-ibang larangan na nagmula sa ating pamantasan,”

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. “Ang dignidad ng guro ay nakabase sa kanyang atas, sa kanyang mandato, sa kanyang responsibilidad; samakatuwid, sa kanyang tungkuling ginagampanan: ang paghubog sa mga kamalayan upang masusing timbangin ang katwiran at turuan ang mag-aaral kung papaano umiwas sa panlilinlang, manindigan sa katotohanan, at ipaglaban ang katarungan.”

“Ang saligan ng dignidad ng pagiging guro ay ayon sa antas ng kanyang pagtupad sa atas na iginagawad sa kanya; ito ang nag-aangat sa guro. Ginagawa siyang kakaiba at nagtatangi sa kanya sa ibang mga larangan,” Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in ��ϲ�ֱ�� as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. “Sila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,” he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle “repeater sections” and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: “Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa ��ϲ�ֱ��.”

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ��, except the Gawad Benavides).

Science co-hosts symposium with Nagoya City University

From July 16-17, 2015 (Thursday-Friday), the ��ϲ�ֱ�� co-hosted the symposium entitled ‘Biodiversity and Environmental Medicine in South East and East Asia based on molecular biology 2015,” with Nagoya City University, Japan.
