The Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSEd) and the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) – ��ϲ�ֱ�� Sentro Turismo officially turned over a 10-year Sustainable Tourism and Strategic Development Plan for Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela on August 19, 2024 (Monday).

The plan aimed to assess the potential of Barangay San Miguel in Echague, Isabela, for sustainable community-based tourism in the new and next normal. It also determined the current situation of the barangay, specifically its community-based tourism industry development, analyzed different related issues, constraints, and opportunities of the barangay for community-based tourism industry development, assessed the perspectives and views of different stakeholders on the sustainability and development of the barangay’s tourism resources, assessed tourism development impacts, specifically on the barangay’s economic, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects, and developed a sustainable community-based tourism strategic development framework and sustainability indicators for Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela.

The Office of Hon. Faustino “Inno” A. Dy V of the 6^th District of Isabela initiated the project and was supported by the Municipal Government of Echague, Isabela. The turnover activity was conducted at the Blessed Jane of Aza Lounge, Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. Building.

Mr. Louie Simbe, the Municipal Tourism, Culture, and Arts Officer of the Municipality, and Ms. Claire Santiago, the Political Affairs Assistant under the Office of Cong. Inno officially received the plan. Officials from the DOST NRCP also attended the event. It was headed by Dr. Aimee Lynn Barrion-Dupo (President) and Dr. Bernardo N. Sepeda (Executive Director). While RCSSEd was represented by its Director, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jeremaiah M. Opiniano.

The plan was an output of the project entitled “Sustainable Community-based Tourism Potential and Development of Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela in the New/Next Normal.” The project was also part of the 1^st batch of the Policy-funded Research Projects under the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST).

Science, Tourism academic staff win awards in Nat’l Academy of Science and Technology Talent Search for Young Scientists

Three academic staff of the University comprised half of the finalists/winners of the 2024 National Academy of Science and Technology Talent Search for Young Scientists (NAST TSYS), which conferred the recognition this July 2024.

Winning the Third Prize is Inst. John Andrew C. Albay, PhD of the Department of Mathematics and Physics for his work “Colloidal Heat Engine Driven by Engineered Active Noise.” Albay becomes the first NAST TSYS awardee of the Department.

Receiving citations are Inst. Katherine Yasmin M. Garcia, MS of the Department of Chemistry and Asst. Prof. Jame Monren T. Mercado, MA of the Department of Tourism Management.

Garcia was recognized for her work entitled “Antiproliferative and Cytotoxic Cytochalasins from 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘢 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘢 Inhibit Action Polymerization and Aggregation.”

Meanwhile, Mercado, who is an academic researcher of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education, was recognized for his work entitled “Ysla de Panciteria: A Preliminary Study on the Culinary Heritage Significance of Pancit Using the Heritage Documentation Approach — the Case of Luzon Island, Philippines.” Mercado co-authored the work with Dr. Avi Ben Andalecio, also of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management.

CTHM’s Sentro Turismo turns over five-year sustainable strategic tourism dev’t plan to Ormoc City

The College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, through its ��ϲ�ֱ�� Sentro Turismo, conducted Pagsibol Ormoc City on June 28, 2024 (Friday) at the Ormoc City Hall, Province of Leyte. Pagsibol Ormoc City concentrated on presenting and officially submitting the Sustainable Strategic Tourism Development Plan 2023-2028, which conceptualized a sustainable strategic tourism development plan for the City based on the value- and rights-based developmental approach through cultural and heritage significance, current internal and external environments, the tourism and hospitality-related plans and implemented programs and projects, and the perspectives of different primary and secondary stakeholders.

The project is in partnership with the City Government, represented by its Mayor, Hon. Lucy Torres-Gomez, Hon. Richard I. Gomez, DPA (Congressman, 4^th District of Leyte), the members of the Sanggunian Panlungsod Committee on Tourism, Culture, Heritage, and the Arts, the City Tourism Council, and the Ormoc City Tourism Office. At the same time, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� was represented by the Assistant Dean of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evangeline E. Timbang, and the members of the project team.

Mayor Torres-Gomez pointed out during her Message of Appreciation that the plan will provide them with significant measures for conceptualizing their programs and projects for the sustainable tourism development of the city. It also allowed the government to be aware of the current negative situations in the Ormoc Tourism Industry that it must address. After the output presentation, the Sanggunian Committee approved the Resolution adopting the plan.

��ϲ�ֱ��’s Scopus entries breach 3,000 mark

The University has reached the 3,000 mark in terms of scholarly works recorded in the world’s leading scholarly database Scopus as of October 19, 2023.

After registering 2,995 indexed entries last week, ��ϲ�ֱ�� tallied on October 19, 2023 3,003 journal articles, book chapters, books, conference papers, and other research materials.

The eight most recent co-authored works, covering journal articles and conference papers, came from the following:

· Ross Vasquez of the Faculty of Pharmacy (Biomedicine and Pharmacotherapy);

· Carlo Gabriel Casipit of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery (IJC Heart and Vasculature);

· Jojo Blanza of the Faculty of Engineering (International Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering);

· Frederick Masangkay of the Faculty of Pharmacy (three journals articles in Scientific Reports);

· Marc Eric Reyes of the College of Science (BMC Psychology); and

· Jame Monren Mercado and advisee students from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (Journal of Ethnic Foods).

Citing Scopus’ labels for disciplines and research themes, ��ϲ�ֱ��’s ten leading research themes in terms of total indexed works are Medicine (1,284); the Social Sciences (473); the Agricultural and Biological Sciences (432); Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology (367); Environmental Sciences (260); Engineering (233); Computer Science (209); Arts and Humanities (180); Immunology and Microbiology (147); and Neuroscience (139).

��ϲ�ֱ�� finally got ranked in TIMES Higher Education’s World University Rankings (particularly the 2024 edition) after meeting the minimum requirement for Scopus-indexed materials in the last five years: 150 per year and at least 1,000 in the last five years. The 2024 World University Rankings covered the years 2018 to 2022.

#TeamKomunidad, a project team composed of academic researchers from the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSEd) – Tourism Studies RIG, College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) and ��ϲ�ֱ�� Sentro Turismo, presented their Policy Research entitled “Sustainable Community-based Tourism Potential and Development of Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela in the New/Next Normal” on June 7, 2023 at the House of Representatives, Quezon City, as part of the National Research Council of the Philippines’s Research Forum and Agenda Setting for Policy Development.

The project aimed to assess the potential and development of the Barangay and its related stakeholders on sustainable community-based tourism. It was funded by the Department of Science and Technology – National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST NRCP) through the initiative of the House of Representatives Office of Hon. Faustino “Inno” A. Dy V of the 6^th District of Isabela.

During the Policy Forum, Congressman Inno Dy V, who is also the Chair of the House Committee on Bases Conversion, shared the significance of sustainable tourism development to uplift the way of life of the local community and their related stakeholders in the municipality and even through its district and nearby provinces. The plan will provide them with a strategic and evidence-based approach to mechanizing their programs and projects for tourism development and resource conservation.

After the research forum, Congressman Inno graced a ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the ��ϲ�ֱ�� and the Municipal Government of Echague, Isabela. The MOA signified the strong relationship between the two parties, specifically on implementing the DOST NRCP Policy Funded Research Project. LGU Echague was represented by Hon. Francis Faustino “Kiko” A. Dy (Municipal Mayor), Hon. Allan P. Tupong, MD (Municipal Vice Mayor), the Members of the Sanggunian Bayan, and Mr. Louie C. Simbe (Municipal Tourism, Culture and Arts Officer).

Papers on Philippine sawsawan, Puto Calasiao by CTHM Culinary Entrep students win paper award

Two (2) research teams from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management’s BS Hospitality Management – Culinary Entrepreneurship Program won 1^st and 2^nd Place for Best Paper – Student Category during the KAIN Conference 2023. It was held on April 4, 2023 (Tuesday) at Jose Rizal University, Mandaluyong City.

Karen Grace V. Aster, Jaime Ramir B. Castillo, Shekaina R. Cheng, John Paulo L. Trillana, and Ysabella Marie B. Varlez won 1^st Place with the research entitled “Sawsawan: Explicating the Culinary Heritage Significance of Philippine Condiments using Bibliometrics (1972 – 2018)”.

Meanwhile, Dylan M. Cariño, Victor Ian P. Cera, Ma. Sophia J. Medina, Louise Orlane R. Reyes, Arrian Karl A. Zaldivar, and Thomas Dominic M. Zambrano won 2^nd Place with the research entitled “Amputi Balitok (White Gold): Explicating the Culinary Significance and Safeguarding Dimensions of Puto Calasiao in Pangasinan, Philippines.” The research was in partnership with the Municipal Government of Calasiao, Pangasinan, and the paper was co-authored by Ms. Tammy Marie C. Fernandez (Municipal Tourism Officer) and Mr. Gerald L. Quinit (Municipal Agriculturist).

KAIN Conference, now in its third year and part of the education campaign of the Filipino Food Month national celebration, aims to play a major role in achieving sustainable development goals by promoting agricultural development, food security, nutrition, sustainable food production, and the conservation of biodiversity. It was organized by the Slow Food Youth Movement Network Philippines, Philippine Culinary Heritage Movement, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, and Jose Rizal University.

Both teams were mentored by Inst. Jame Monren T. Mercado, MACHS from the Department of Tourism Management and the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education. Mercado co-authored the work.

CTHM students present culinary heritage research during the SEAMEO CHAT Symposium 2023

Two research teams from the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management under the BS Hospitality Management – Culinary Entrepreneurship Program presented their culinary heritage research during the international virtual symposium entitled “Traditions of Food in Southeast Asia: In Trace of Southeast Asia’s Food Culture,” organized by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Centre for History and Tradition (SEAMEO CHAT). It was held on January 26 and 27, 2023 (Thursday and Friday) through Zoom Meetings. The event’s objective concentrated on the awareness and significance of food culture in the region, highlighting its similarities and diversities.

The first research, entitled “Amputi Balitok (White Gold): Explicating the Culinary Significance and Safeguarding Dimensions of Puto Calasiao in Pangasinan, Philippines,” was presented by Dylan M. Cariño, Victor Ian P. Cera, Ma. Sophia J. Medina, Louise Orlane R. Reyes, Arrian Karl A. Zaldivar, and Thomas Dominic M. Zambrano. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Atty. Gezzez Giezi G. Granado, the Dean of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, won Best Research Presenter award at the 1^st International Tourism Educators Convention and Research Conference (ITECReC) held last November 28 to 30, 2022, at the Mandarin Hotel Bangkok, Thailand. It was organized by the Union of Filipino Tourism Educators, Inc. (UFTE).

Dean Granado presented the research entitled “The Value and Significance of Local Ordinances in Sustainable Community-based Tourism – The Case of Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela, Philippines.” The study was co-authored by CTHM academic staff Mr. Jame Monren T. Mercado, Mr. Avi Ben P. Andalecio, Ms. Fhamela F. Sarmiento, Asst. Prof. Maria Concepcion A. Ang, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Evangeline E. Timbang. The research aims to understand how laws and ordinances contribute to Sustainable Tourism in Barangay San Miguel, Echague, Isabela.

Mercado of Tourism, RCSSED wins first NRCP award for research-based policy formulation

Inst. Jame Monren T. Mercado, MACHS, academic staff of the Department of Tourism Management and researcher of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education, is one of the Gabay Awardees of the National Research Council of the Philippines, which conferred the recognitions on December 5, 2022 at Intramuros, Manila.

Mercado, who conducts studies on Philippine culture and heritage, was the awardee for the Social Sciences Division (Division VIII). He joined four other researchers who were recognized by the government for their studies that have been instrumental in the adoption of policies, programs, and/or initiatives in various localities.

Three policies were borne out of Mercado’s studies: the Ormoc City Sustainable Tourism Development Plan by the Leyte and Ormoc Festival and Cultural Foundation, Inc; the Food Mapping Project for the Provinces of Bulacan and Pampanga by the Department of Tourism – Region III; and the San Nicolas, Ilocos Norte Sustainable Tourism and Strategic Development Plan 2021-2025.

The five awardees are the inaugural recipients of the award, “NRCP’s newest recognition system given to active members whose research works have resulted or translated to adopted technologies and policies or have informed policy decisions….”

Thomasian experts provide capacity-building in PARTH seminar-workshop on research collaboration, grants application

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� College of Tourism and Hospitality Management partnered with the Philippine Association of Researchers for Tourism and Hospitality, Inc. (PARTH) for the implementation of a 3-day HyFlex Capacity Building Seminar-Workshop on Research Collaboration and Grants Application held on October 1, 15, and November 05, 022, at the Multi-function Room, Buenaventura Garcia-Paredes, O.P. Building. The program aims to capacitate PARTH Individual members to collaborate with other academic staff and researchers in the tourism and hospitality academe and industry sectors. The capacity building will discuss different facets of research collaboration projects and grant application, project management, logistical arrangement, financial management, and different cases on a national research grant and team collaboration.

The objectives of the HyFlex event are as follows:

To provide basic principles on research collaboration and grant application;
To discuss the dynamics of project management in research and development;
To determine significant aspects of research logistics and implementation;
To analyze the protocols and strategies for research financial management and sustainability;
To discover the experiences of research teams and collaborations from their previous research grant awards; and
To conceptualize a research proposal that can be submitted to potential research grant applications
