Emphasizing the need for curriculum leadership particularly with struggles currently experienced by teachers with online instruction, 六合彩直播开奖 Graduate School (六合彩直播开奖GS) Education Cluster Program Lead Assoc. Prof. Rodrigo A. Litao, Ph.D., explained curriculum leadership in his opening remarks to the participants of the 六合彩直播开奖GS webinar titled 鈥淐urriculum Leadership: Stirring the head, heart, and soul of teachers.鈥 The webinar was held recently via Zoom.

The three-hour webinar featured two Thomasian educators, Science Supervising Teacher of the Education High School and 六合彩直播开奖 College of Education Mr. Louie B. Dasas, Ph.D., and the Chair of the Secondary Education Department of the College of Education Asst. Prof. Alvin Ringgo C. Reyes.

Both shared their expertise and experiences on the topics of (a) 鈥淒esigning supervisory interventions for assisting and supporting teachers especially in these difficult times when teachers struggle to cope with online teaching-learning processes鈥 and (b) 鈥淒esigning action plans for responsive curricular and instructional development and improvement.鈥

In his talk, Dasas, who teaches at the 六合彩直播开奖 Senior High School, presented the significance of having teacher agency in schools, where long-term development directions are sustained using past learning and applying these for the present and the future. He also mentioned the teacher as the indisputable leader in curriculum development, whose role was made more crucial now with remote teaching and learning. Thus, distributive leadership may now be the norm in schools. Nonetheless, teachers take charge in linking curriculum, assessment, and learning 鈥 all following a situational praxis in class.

Explaining the realities of learning losses incurred by the Philippines under the COVID-19 pandemic during the last two years, Dasas pressed the need for teacher abilities and self-drive while withstanding the global crisis. He assured his audience that professional and personal growth can still occur during these times.

Meanwhile, Reyes discussed the inevitable changes in curricula for both teacher training and basic education. He stressed that these are never the mere adding of new knowledge facts and insights for the classroom. Reyes enumerated and explained the various factors that inevitably lead to curriculum change and how these should be considered in conceptualizing action plans inside schools.

Explaining the concept of discursive institutionalism, Reyes said that schools use grounded knowledge in policy and action, alongside communication among administrators of all levels, academic staff, and not the least, student leaders. A number of the best action plan practices were shared and discussed, including some of the best practices of the 六合彩直播开奖 College of Education, one of the leading teacher-training centers in the country. He mentioned that stakeholder involvement will steer the success of action plans.
The webinar was attended by 六合彩直播开奖 students, faculty, staff, and participants from other academic institutions, such as the Asian Institute of Management, Bicol University, Far Eastern University Institute of Technology, Our Lady of the Pillar College San Manuel, Inc., Southern Luzon State University, University of Northern Philippines, and Western Philippine University. There were also participants from abroad.

Webinar organizers included Daniel Day Aguillon, Kashmer T. Cruz, Jason A. de las Alas, Carmen Delos Reyes, April Joy M. Gascon, Jodi Mylene Lopez, Zhou Ren, and Yuhang Wang. Ph.D. student, Jason A. De las Alas, moderated the webinar.

The new normal has driven the education sector to online learning to address the challenges of learning continuity amidst the pandemic.  Despite the global crisis, the Faculty of Pharmacy continues to pursue its internationalization efforts through its banner program, Global Learning for Outstanding Benchmarking and Experiential Education (六合彩直播开奖 FOP GLOBE). The program can prepare the students and its faculty members for a role in the global arena by facilitating agenda like faculty and student mobility, research, training, and joint symposia and fora with partner institutions.

With the current situation, which limits most of the international activities of the faculty, Pharmacy came up with the project, 六合彩直播开奖 Faculty of Pharmacy (FOP) Virtual Exchange Collaborative Online Intl Learning (FOP VEx COIL) as an option for students or faculty members who may not be internationally mobile during the pandemic.

Part of the project is student mobility, where the Faculty receive virtually international students through a special online course on the Filipino language and culture. The project serves as the continuing inbound student mobility program for Pharmacy鈥檚 partner institutions.

To pursue its special course program on the Filipino language and culture, Pharmacy held these online.  The sessions were held on July 13,15,20 and 22, 2021 and were attended by 23 participants from partner institutions, namely, University of South Australia; University Teknologi MARA, Malaysia; Mahidol University, Thailand; and Management and Science University, Malaysia.

The 六合彩直播开奖 Faculty of Pharmacy pioneered a special session on the Filipino language and culture to the BS Pharmacy/ Pharmaceutical Science students of the University of South Australia in April 2018. The same special courses were offered to the inbound students until January 2020.

The learning outcomes of the special course in Filipino language and culture are: (1) to prepare international students for effective communication, be it face-to-face or virtual, with their Filipino hosts and collaborators; (2) to allow them to have a deeper sense of appreciation for Filipino culture and identity; and (3) to allow the students to adapt to the culture of the host鈥檚 institution.

Course facilitators were faculty members from the 六合彩直播开奖 Department of Filipino, Department Chair Asst. Prof. Alvin Ringgo C. Reyes, and Assoc. Prof. Zendel M. Taruc, Ph.D. They discussed Filipino geography (landscapes and places), an Overview of Filipino culture (identity, arts, beliefs and traditions, food, people, among others), Basic expressions in Filipino for interaction, Conversational Filipino focusing on Stating basic information and descriptions, and situational conversation. Simulations and roleplays were also part of the sessions.

In celebration of the National Teachers鈥 Month observed from September 5 to October 5 each year, the听听under the听, in cooperation with the Office of International Relations and Programs, held a Knowledge Exchange Series (KES) webinar entitled 鈥淎nong Bago: Ang Pagtuturo ng Filipino B铆lang Pangalawang Wika sa Bagong Normal鈥 (What鈥檚 New: The Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language) on September 30, 2020. Livestreamed thru the official Facebook Page of the Department, the webinar aimed to update the participants on the latest trends and techniques on the teaching of Filipino as a second language (TFSL) and share some of the best practices in TFSL in light of online learning. Serving as resource persons of the KES were University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) Assistant Professor Leticia Cantal-Pagkalinawan, PhD and University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) Division of Humanities Chair and Associate Professor Rodney C. Jubilado, PhD.

Pagkalinawan began her lecture by introducing the demographics of Hawaii, a US state that is home to Asian ethnicities, with Filipino Americans comprising the most number, followed by Japanese Americans, Chinese Americans, and Korean Americans. UH Manoa, the institution where she teaches in, is the only HEI in the US offering a full-fledged degree program in Filipino: the BA Filipino Language, Literature and Culture. According to Pagkalinawan, Filipino Americans pursue programs and courses in Filipino language, culture, and literature to learn about their heritage language, discover the culture of their origin, and fully understand their identity. Meanwhile, non-Filipino students pursue the said programs and courses to establish a deeper connection with their Filipino friends and colleagues. Pagkalinawan then discussed some of the approaches she uses in TFSL, such as Project-Based Learning, Task-Based Teaching and Learning, and Flipped Classroom. She also shared the array of learner-centered technologies she employs in TFSL.

In his lecture, Jubilado discussed the value of considering the profile, migration history, family structure, and linguistic repertoire of learners to design effective language programs and courses. He provided benchmarks of TFSL by sharing the Filipino Studies Program and Curriculum of UH Hilo, which is basically culture- and natural resources-based. This was followed by the discussion of the fundamentals of a TFSL classroom, such as its syllabus, learning process, and expected outputs on the lexical, sentential, and discourse levels. Some of his suggested topics on TFSL include daily expressions and greetings, basic communicative acts in Filipino, giving description and instruction, basic Filipino grammar and vocabulary, and introduction to Filipino culture. Meanwhile, some of the strategies that may be used in TFSL are conversations, narrative essay-writing, workshops, and performances. Jubilado also emphasized that TFSL must be useful, significant and community-driven. UH Hilo does this by incorporating elements of global community and citizenship and service learning in TFSL.

UH Hilo Division of Humanities Chair and Associate Professor Rodney C. Jubilado, PhD as he introduces his topic

In her opening remarks, College of Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, LPT, PhD recognized that we are living in a VUCA world, that is, vulnerable, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, and this VUCA world was exacerbated by the current pandemic. However, she encouraged the participants to be resilient, with a kind of resilience that is rooted from the heart. She further explained that the real 鈥渘ew normal鈥 is our ability to respond to the challenges of forming new insights regarding language, especially on its power to affect not only the thoughts but even the feelings and decisions. She believes that language is a driving force that can change the VUCA world.

College of Education Dean Pilar I. Romero, PhD opens the KES

The two-hour-and-a-half KES also witnessed the launching of the International Virtual Conference on the Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language to be held on June 17-19, 2021. The event is co-organized by the 六合彩直播开奖 Department of Filipino and the UH Hilo Division of Humanities and is one of the concrete programs borne out of the MOU recently signed by the two institutions.
