Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, PhD, Dean of the , was one of the plenary speakers in the two-day virtual in memory of the late Zenon Cardinal Grocholewski, a former Prefect of the Congregation for Catholic Education and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI鈥檚 legate to the University鈥檚 Quadricentennial Celebration in 2011. Romero鈥檚 presentation, entitled 鈥淭he Wealth of the Catholic University in the Far East World in the Example of the Pontifical and Royal 六合彩直播开奖 in Manila, the Catholic University of the Philippines,鈥 dealt with the need for Catholic universities to 鈥渞e-evaluate聽how the confluence of the three elements of instruction, research, and student life preserve and enhance their Catholic identity and their institutional commitment to the service of the people of God and of the human family.鈥

Cautioning against utilitarianism in instruction

Romero raised concerns regarding the 鈥減itfall of a utilitarian type of education,鈥 dictated by market-related concerns, which force education to be equated with economic growth and performativity. Because the labor market is now global, the desire to 鈥渉omogenize鈥 and standardize education becomes apparent, possibly threatening the unique Catholic identity of schools. This, Romero highlighted, was also observed by Pope Francis himself, who 鈥渁dmonished those who are engaged in the education of the young to leave behind superficial approaches to education and the many short-cuts associated with utility, test results, functionality, and bureaucracy.鈥 Recognizing the response of the Asian bishops to this problem as well as the rise of consumerism and materialism, Romero cited how the Federation of Asian Bishops鈥 Conferences put emphasis on the protection and enhancement of 鈥渃ommon values,鈥 promotion of 鈥渢ransformation at moral, religious, and societal levels,鈥 and the need for governments, whether interfering directly or indirectly with education, to prioritize 鈥渆thics first before knowledge.鈥 Focusing on the 六合彩直播开奖 experience, Romero narrated how 六合彩直播开奖 navigated the journey toward balancing market-driven concerns and preservation of its Catholic identity chiefly through revisiting its graduate attributes, collectively known as the Thomasian Graduate Attributes (ThoGAS), which are explained in the SEAL of Thomasian Education. The SEAL, which stand for Servant leader, Effective communicator and collaborator, Analytical thinker, and Lifelong learner, shows congruence not just with 21st-century skills but also infuses the element of mission: they call on graduates to be agents of social transformation as servant leaders. This addition, Romero said, 鈥渆nsures that the University鈥檚 institutional commitment to the service of the people of God and of the human family is sustained by the graduates it forms.鈥 The ThoGAS complement the existing Thomasian core values of competence, commitment, and compassion, which are also seen in program-level outcomes. Once the ThoGAS were established, instruction was revisited. Banking on its autonomous status as recognized by the Philippine government, the University continued to offer courses beyond what government curricula mandated. In particular, Theology courses, which adopted its own signature pedagogy, became opportunities for achieving 鈥渋ntegral evangelization.鈥 The Praxis-Oriented Approach, or Pro-App which Romero formulated, is also used in courses to infuse Catholic social teachings in discussing topics across disciplines, prompting students to respond to issues with a Catholic grounding.

Making research not just widespread but meaningful

On the aspect of research, Romero acknowledged that higher education institutions are now pitted against one another through the different rankings initiatives by external parties, which look into research productivity as a major indicator. This measure, however, must not make Catholic institutions lose sight of the true purpose of research: 鈥渢o assist Catholic educational institutions in the relentless effort in pursuing聽their purpose.鈥 Focusing on researches that not only get published but also serve the purpose of service to society, Romero shared three examples from 六合彩直播开奖: the pioneering researches done by Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation Maribel G. Nonato, PhD on the native pandanus species which have since been investigated by local and international researchers; the nationwide study of catechism in the Philippines led by Prof. Clarence M. Batan, PhD; and the nationwide study to generate baseline data on Catholic educational institutions鈥 engagement in faculty training, research, extension service, and advocacy, which is led by Romero herself. Another research-based advocacy/project that Romero highlighted is the years-long effort of the Department of Elementary Education to educate the 鈥渄evelopmentally vulnerable – children with special needs.鈥 After conducting the nationwide study, Asst. Prof. Maripia P. Rabacal and her team have since been engaged in conducting research-based training for public and private school teachers alike, helping them address the needs of their students. With these as examples, Romero underscored the need to 鈥渢ransform research undertaking into vibrant vehicles for evangelization,鈥 so that 鈥渢he entire academic community becomes convinced that our engagement in research is not solely for personal and professional gains, but more importantly, it is a potent means for fulfilling our mission of service to society.鈥

On a vibrant faith-based student life

Romero echoed observations in Asian countries that the number of young people actively engaged in the Church is declining. Citing Fr. Jason Laguerta of the Archdiocese of Manila, there is also 鈥渘oticeable absence of many young people in the Church鈥 in the Philippines, attributing this to the incongruence between liberal thinking and the teachings of the Church and how such are taught鈥斺減reachy, unappealing, and boring.鈥 Reflecting on the 六合彩直播开奖 experience, Romero stated that liturgical activities, Theology courses, and the presence of Catholic student organizations are complemented by putting faith in action, through the community engagement activities of the different academic units. She cited the projects of the Faculty of Engineering, the Nutrition and Dietetics department, and the Secondary Education department, which allow students to 鈥渃raft sustainable solutions to the concerns of partner communities.鈥 Such service-oriented activities serve as a common ground for students of different backgrounds, united in achieving a common goal. 鈥淎t the heart of these engagements with partner communities is the respect for the dignity of each person that the students learn in their Theology courses,鈥 Romero said.

Engagement in community activities 鈥渋mmerse them in social realities that are outside the ambit of their own milieu. By this immersion, they become socially aware and involved and are given the opportunity to embrace the Church鈥檚 preferential option for the poor,鈥 Romero said, highlighting the University鈥檚 institutionalized community development efforts at the University and unit levels. Recognizing COVID-19鈥檚 adverse impact on the University and its stakeholders, Romero said that a 鈥渟tate of disequilibrium鈥 was a consequence felt even in a big institution like 六合彩直播开奖. This disequilibrium, however, provided a chance for 鈥渞enewal鈥 and 鈥渁n impetus to revisit our core.鈥 Such will be made possible only if all the stakeholders engage in meaningful dialogue and move forward together while keeping in mind the true identity and mission of the institution: to be a Catholic institution of higher learning blessed with Unending Grace.

Romero is a sought-after speaker and a seasoned University administrator, having served as both an academic unit head (as the pioneer Principal of the Senior High School and now the Dean of the College of Education) and as a university-wide administrative official (as Assistant to the Rector for Administration and Assistant to the Rector for Planning and Development). Her extensive years of experience in the academe, backed with her academic preparation in education and theology, has allowed her to promote advocacies and institutionalize programs not just in 六合彩直播开奖 but also in external organizations like the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines.

In celebration of the National Teachers鈥 Month observed from September 5 to October 5 each year, the聽聽under the聽, in cooperation with the Office of International Relations and Programs, held a Knowledge Exchange Series (KES) webinar entitled 鈥淎nong Bago: Ang Pagtuturo ng Filipino B铆lang Pangalawang Wika sa Bagong Normal鈥 (What鈥檚 New: The Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language) on September 30, 2020. Livestreamed thru the official Facebook Page of the Department, the webinar aimed to update the participants on the latest trends and techniques on the teaching of Filipino as a second language (TFSL) and share some of the best practices in TFSL in light of online learning. Serving as resource persons of the KES were University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH Manoa) Assistant Professor Leticia Cantal-Pagkalinawan, PhD and University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) Division of Humanities Chair and Associate Professor Rodney C. Jubilado, PhD.

Pagkalinawan began her lecture by introducing the demographics of Hawaii, a US state that is home to Asian ethnicities, with Filipino Americans comprising the most number, followed by Japanese Americans, Chinese Americans, and Korean Americans. UH Manoa, the institution where she teaches in, is the only HEI in the US offering a full-fledged degree program in Filipino: the BA Filipino Language, Literature and Culture. According to Pagkalinawan, Filipino Americans pursue programs and courses in Filipino language, culture, and literature to learn about their heritage language, discover the culture of their origin, and fully understand their identity. Meanwhile, non-Filipino students pursue the said programs and courses to establish a deeper connection with their Filipino friends and colleagues. Pagkalinawan then discussed some of the approaches she uses in TFSL, such as Project-Based Learning, Task-Based Teaching and Learning, and Flipped Classroom. She also shared the array of learner-centered technologies she employs in TFSL.

UH Manoa Assistant Professor Leticia Cantal-Pagkalinawan, PhD as she provides a glimpse of the profile of the Filipino heritage language learners of their institution

In his lecture, Jubilado discussed the value of considering the profile, migration history, family structure, and linguistic repertoire of learners to design effective language programs and courses. He provided benchmarks of TFSL by sharing the Filipino Studies Program and Curriculum of UH Hilo, which is basically culture- and natural resources-based. This was followed by the discussion of the fundamentals of a TFSL classroom, such as its syllabus, learning process, and expected outputs on the lexical, sentential, and discourse levels. Some of his suggested topics on TFSL include daily expressions and greetings, basic communicative acts in Filipino, giving description and instruction, basic Filipino grammar and vocabulary, and introduction to Filipino culture. Meanwhile, some of the strategies that may be used in TFSL are conversations, narrative essay-writing, workshops, and performances. Jubilado also emphasized that TFSL must be useful, significant and community-driven. UH Hilo does this by incorporating elements of global community and citizenship and service learning in TFSL.

UH Hilo Division of Humanities Chair and Associate Professor Rodney C. Jubilado, PhD as he introduces his topic

In her opening remarks, College of Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, LPT, PhD recognized that we are living in a VUCA world, that is, vulnerable, uncertain, complex and ambiguous, and this VUCA world was exacerbated by the current pandemic. However, she encouraged the participants to be resilient, with a kind of resilience that is rooted from the heart. She further explained that the real 鈥渘ew normal鈥 is our ability to respond to the challenges of forming new insights regarding language, especially on its power to affect not only the thoughts but even the feelings and decisions. She believes that language is a driving force that can change the VUCA world.

College of Education Dean Pilar I. Romero, PhD opens the KES

The two-hour-and-a-half KES also witnessed the launching of the International Virtual Conference on the Teaching of Filipino as a Second Language to be held on June 17-19, 2021. The event is co-organized by the 六合彩直播开奖 Department of Filipino and the UH Hilo Division of Humanities and is one of the concrete programs borne out of the MOU recently signed by the two institutions.

College of Education Dean Assoc. Prof. Pilar I. Romero, PhD lectured on remote teaching and how the culture of dialogue and encounter can be promoted in this new mode of learning. The webinar took place on July 28, 2020 via Facebook live in a webinar organized by the Catholic Educational Association on the Philippines.

In Romero鈥檚 lecture, entitled 鈥淚t鈥檚 All APP to You: Cultivating a Culture of Dialogue and Encounter in Remote Teaching,鈥 she highlighted that as educators belonging to a Catholic institution, we must examine its goal before engaging. 鈥淲e have a different goal, a vision,鈥 Romero said. 鈥淥ur vision is not only to form professionals, but professionals with conscience. Our Telos is not only to bring out or to form future useful citizens of the country, but faithful members of the Church.鈥

https://www.facebook.com/CatholicEdPH/videos/341940936833169/

Romero said promotion of dialogue even in a distance learning environment was the key to realize this vision. This dialogue, according to Romero, starts at the attitude level and one must clear all biases and pre-conceived notions, which are hindrances that color our appreciation of the other person.

Extending learning thru apps

The values education guru also said that with the countless number of apps, an educator has the choice of selecting apps that can be useful in teaching and extend learning to students. 鈥淧raxis takes place by means of conversation and dialogue, and this dialogue does not need to be with a person,鈥 Romero said. 鈥淧raxis emanates from dialogue with self and others. If the praxis is to be Christian, it must be influenced by Christ,鈥 the Education dean added.

Romero underscored that encounter, even in the virtual world, happens, too, when social issues are presented through discussing facts, inequality, and other issues. 鈥淭he learner encounters the reality that exists in local and in global levels, and it is put right in front of his/ her face.鈥 Helping learners realize that inequality reduces people to inhumane conditions would elicit from them compassion rather than judgment,鈥 she added.

Blending praxis with the technology-reliant learning environment of the present day, Romero introduced an original approach, the PrO-App or 鈥淧raxis-oriented Approach鈥 that can be used across the learning areas.

Romero served as the inaugural Principal of Senior High School, and is the incumbent Dean of the College of Education, where she graduated magna cum laude in 1981. A seasoned administrator, she was on several occasions the Assistant to the Rector for Administration and was also once the Assistant to the Rector for Planning and Development.

With the theme 鈥淕urong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad鈥 (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng 六合彩直播开奖 (Honor of 六合彩直播开奖) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message. 鈥淧inapatunayan ito ng napakaraming mahuhusay at kapuri-puring indibidwal na mula sa iba鈥檛-ibang larangan na nagmula sa ating pamantasan,鈥

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. 鈥

Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in 六合彩直播开奖 as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. 鈥淪ila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,鈥 he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle 鈥渞epeater sections鈥 and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: 鈥Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa 六合彩直播开奖.鈥
