��ϲ�ֱ��, CYCU-Taiwan hold 2nd joint symposium on chemical sciences

From September 26-27, 2019, the ��ϲ�ֱ�� and Chung Yuan Christian University – Taiwan held its Second Joint Symposium on Chemical Sciences, at ��ϲ�ֱ��’s Central Laboratory Auditorium. The event bore the theme “Recent Innovations in Chemical Sciences for a Better Life,” and brought together the two universities’ scientists to present frontiers of chemistry and allied sciences.

Gathering over 100 attendees from different academic, government, and industry sectors, the second symposium updating the participants on the advances in polymers; materials science; nanotechnology; green, computational, medicinal, synthetic, and organic chemistry; and opening up possibilities of engaging them in meaningful collaborations.

The symposium held both plenary and poster presentation sessions over the two days.

External Calibration vs Standard Addition Method in the Determination of Calcium in Drinking Water by ICP-OES for Proficiency Testing Studies

The researchers represented the Department of Science and Technology’s Industrial Technology Development Institute.

The collaboration with CYCU began in 2010, when the first Memorandum of Understanding was first signed. Since then, CYCU has hosted ��ϲ�ֱ��’s Engineering, Physics, and Chemistry students for internship, as well as alumni and faculty for postgraduate studies.

A two-year joint project between Prof. Jui-Ming Yeh and was also finished in 2017, resulting in a number of international joint publications and theses topics of undergraduate and graduate students.

Santiago of International Relations presents ��ϲ�ֱ��’s internationalization strategy in ASEACCU conference in Korea

On August 21, 2019, , Associate Director of the , presented ��ϲ�ֱ��’s Internationalization framework and strategies, on the occasion of the 27th Association of South and Southeast Asian Catholic Colleges and Universities (ASEACCU), held in Sogang University, South Korea.

For the students, the institution, the global community

Santiago underscored that internationalization activities redound to benefits for three main sectors: the students, the institution, and the global community.

With the intercultural fluency and soft skills development that students acquire comes a network of international contacts that can jumpstart a career in the international arena and true global citizenship. Such entry into the global workplace of equipped students can bring in the benefits of diversity to the workplace and society, which can become more open and inclusive. Ultimately, such openness to cultures and backgrounds, coupled with the mutual benefits people derive from one another, can redound to peace and order, which are an indirect but desired effect of people living together in harmony.

Talking about the benefit to the institution, Santiago noted that internationalization has aided in the goal of continuous quality improvement, for it, among other things, encouraged discussion and knowledge sharing, attracted talents to the University, created a positive impact on various accreditation efforts and even world rankings, as well as opened doors for scholarships, grants, and exchange opportunities through the enhanced networks the University was able to develop.

How ��ϲ�ֱ�� does it

Santiago also enumerated ��ϲ�ֱ��’s five main internationalization programs, namely Student Mobility Programs, Faculty Diversity, Transnational Researches, Transnational Education, and Internationalization at Home.

For Student Mobility Programs, student exchanges, summer schools, leadership training, discovery tours / academic visits, and research attachments through internships, clinical rotation, and service learning are done.

Apart from sending its students abroad, ��ϲ�ֱ�� also receives students for mobility programs, for English Language Courses; Tropical Biodiversity and Urban Environment Community Immersion / Internships; Participation in Joint Conferences; and exchange programs funded by the ASEAN International Mobility of Students (AIMS), European Union Support for Higher Education in the ASEAN Region (EU-SHARE) and the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Regional Centre for Higher Education and Development (SEAMEO-RIHED). For the period of 2014-2017, South Korean students accounted for the largest cohort of inbound students, at 22%, with China coming in close at 21%.

Faculty diversity is seen through the slew of Visiting Lecturers and Professors (e.g., from the Linnaeus University – Sweden), Joint Thematic Conferences, Joint Scientific Activities, and Joint Research Supervision (e.g., Bioanalytical Nanotechnology School – Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Spain).

Currently, Transnational Research has led to at least three global projects, namely the collaboration among Lille 1, CARRTEL, INRA (France); University of Shiga Prefecture (Japan) and National Taiwan University; and the ��ϲ�ֱ�� to extend the knowledge base on the effect of global changes, especially climate change, on freshwater plankton.

Currently, there are two researches funded by grants from the Newton Fund of the British Council, namely, the Eco-Social Surveying: Mapping Social Assets, Urban Greenery, and the Connections between Them in Rapidly Changing Cities (between the ��ϲ�ֱ�� and the University of Reading School of Architecture); and the Affordable Near-Patient Tests for Infectious Diseases in the Philippines (between the ��ϲ�ֱ�� and and the University of Cambridge).

For Transnational Education, five programs are currently running: 1) 3+2 BS Engineering; 2) 5+1 MS Engineering (both with the Catholic University of America); 3) 1+1 Dual MS Chemical Engineering, major in Metallurgical Engineering (with Curtin University – Australia); 4) Dual PhD in Built Environment / Architecture (with the University of Reading – United Kingdom); and the Master of Public Health (International) (with the University of Leeds, with which ��ϲ�ֱ�� has an articulation agreement).

Finally, Internationalization At Home is how ��ϲ�ֱ�� integrates “international, intercultural, or global dimensions in the teaching and learning that takes place in the campus,” done through learning a foreign language; interaction with international students through the Buddy System, tutorials, cultural activities, and joint activities, as well as integration of internationalization into the curriculum.

To provide better perspective, Santiago also enumerated ��ϲ�ֱ��’s early internationalization efforts, such as the pioneering of health science programs, namely the MS in Audiology (with Macquarie University); MS in Pain Management (with the University of Sydney); and MS in Physical Therapy (with the University of South Australia).

The ��ϲ�ֱ��, through the , signed a memorandum of understanding with Madonna University, a Catholic university in Michigan, USA, for partnerships and exchanges in the field of Health Science on January 17, 2019 at the Rector’s Hall, Main Building, ��ϲ�ֱ��.

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� was represented by its Rector, and Madonna University was represented by its President, Dr. Michael Grandillo. On the part of ��ϲ�ֱ��, witnesses were: (OIRP) Director Prof. Lilian J. Sison, PhD, OIRP Associate Director , Office of Admissions Assistant Director Mr. Eric L. Dimar, College of Nursing Regent Rev. Fr. Julius Paul C. Factora, O.P., JCD, College of Nursing Dean Prof. Susan N. Maravilla, DNM, and College of Nursing International Relations Coordinator Asst. Prof. Elizabeth D. Cortez.

Witnesses for Madonna University were: Vice President for Student Affairs and Missions Integration Dr. Connie Tingson-Gatuz, Board of Trustees member and Thomasian alumna of Class 1968 Dr. Stella Evangelista, and Director of Undergraduate Admissions Mr. Mark Schroeder.

��ϲ�ֱ�� wins 2018 QS Bronze Award for Best International Website Page

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� won the Bronze Award for Best International Website Page during the 2018 Quacquarelli-Symonds APPLE Conference held in Seoul, South Korea. The announcement was made on November 21, 2018.

The University website (http://www.ust.edu.ph) was judged based on four criteria: a.) Design, which considers relevance to its audience and visual experience; b.) Interactivity, which deals with the participatory element of the website’s user experiences; c.) Functionality, which means that the website works well, loads quickly, and contains live links; and d.) Content, which is judged on the engaging, audience-appropriate, concise, and clear information provided on the website.

Receiving the award on behalf of the University was ��ϲ�ֱ�� Deputy Director for Engr. Nestor R. Ong, ASEAN Engr. Also in attendance were Associate Director , and QS/THE Rankings unit staff member Mr. Vien Vic G. Flores.

Santiago served as country representative in the QS Forum titled “Focus on Higher Education for Fast Growing Economies.” Meanwhile, Ong was the sole Filipino member of the QS-APPLE International Academic Advisory Conference Committee and he co-chaired the parallel sessions under Track 5: Building a Global University Brand during the conference.

This is the second time that ��ϲ�ֱ�� won the award, with the first time being in 2015. In 2016, ��ϲ�ֱ�� won the first Silver Award for Most Creative Corporate Institution Video during the 12^th QS APPLE Conference and Exhibition in Putrajaya, Malaysia.

This year, ��ϲ�ֱ�� was also nominated for the Creative Awards categories, namely, the Best International Print Advertisement, Most Creative Corporate Institution Video, Best International Student Recruitment Brochure, and Best Exhibition Booth Design.

��ϲ�ֱ�� recognizes research achievements of faculty

A total of 121 faculty members were recognized in the areas of Arts and Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, Health and Allied Sciences, Science and Technology, and Sacred Sciences by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation during the Recognition Program held on March 16, 2018 at the Paredes Building, ��ϲ�ֱ��. They were granted the Gold Series Award and the Silver Series Award for AY 2014 to 2016 and the International Publications Award for AY 2014-2017. ��ϲ�ֱ�� Secretary-General Rev. Fr. Jesús M. Miranda, Jr., O.P., and Vice-Rector for Research and Innovation , assisted by the directors of the respective research centers gave the awards.

The Gold and Silver Series awards are granted to faculty members in recognition of their research productivity and leadership in their respective fields of specialization within the period covered by the award. These awards are based on research publications (author by-line should indicate the ��ϲ�ֱ�� as address in the publication), ongoing research involvement, and tenure in the University.

The Gold Series

The awards, given every two years come in two categories: Research Category and Creative Works Category. The Gold Series Award Research Category is granted to tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D. or M.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least five research papers published in refereed journals/ scholarly books in the last five years, with at least two of these published, one of which is an international (Web of Science/ Scopus) publication, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award, or, authored at least two scholarly books in the last five years, with one of these published within the period covered by the award, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University, and, with at least one research disciple.

Under the Creative Works Category, the awardee should be a tenured full-time faculty member with Ph.D., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ�� except for faculty affiliates of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Graduate School, authored at least three creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University.

The Silver Series

Under the Research Category of the Silver Series, the award is given to tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least three research papers published in refereed journals/scholarly books in the last five years, with at least one of these published, or has one patent or utility model granted, within the period covered by the award or, authored at least one scholarly book in the last five years published within the period covered by the award and, with ongoing research under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. Under the Creative Works Category, the faculty member must be tenured full-time faculty member with M.Sc. or M.A., with teaching load, and exclusively teaching in ��ϲ�ֱ��, must have authored at least two creative or critical works in the last five years, with at least one of these was published within the period covered by the award, and, with ongoing studies (creative projects) under the Research Center or Research Unit of the University. A Research disciple refers to junior faculty members, graduate students, medical interns, and medical residents.

International Publications Award (2014–2017)

The International Publications Award is presented to all full time faculty members teaching only in ��ϲ�ֱ�� for the publication of their research outputs in journal/s and books indexed in the Web of Science/ Scopus with IF Quartile Metrics Ranking. Author byline should indicate the ��ϲ�ֱ�� as address in the publication.

Science holds int’l confab on Interdisciplinary, Collaborative Research

The College of Science organized the 3^rd International Symposium on Molecular Science (ISMS) which was held on December 1 and 2, 2016 at the Benavides Auditorium, with ten local and ten foreign experts as speakers. The two-day symposium had four sessions in the areas of: Biophysics and Analytical Sciences, Biodiversity and Environment, Materials Science and Nanotechnology, and Health and Biomedicine.

The 3^rd ISMS, which coincided with the celebration of the 90^th year of foundation of the college, served as a platform for research dissemination and academic discourse, provided a venue for research collaboration, fostered international cooperation through academic and research partnership, and promoted the Sciences to young Filipinos. Notably, the importance of interdisciplinary and collaborative research was epitomized as non-Thomasians were invited to interact with the presenters and to look for possible future research collaborations. High school students were invited to promote the sciences as a possible future career option. To emphasize, Dean John Donnie A. Ramos, Ph.D., invited the participants and guests to “listen, interact, and forge collaborations with the speakers.” Nagoya City University Vice President Prof. Yuji Imaizumi, Ph.D., was guest.

Moreover, the strive for excellence by the College of Science resonated in this year’s theme, “Interdisciplinary and Collaborative Research towards Intellectualization” as stated by Office of International Relations and Program Director Prof. Lillian J. Sison, Ph.D., in her opening remarks. This symposium gave opportunity to researchers to share one’s techniques and ideas in solving scientific problems – providing an environment that allows different researchers to collaborate. Furthermore, this provided research opportunities for students to contribute in the solution of regional and global concerns. Beyond this, however, the symposium provided means to deepen relationship and appreciation of one another’s culture.

The speakers from the Chung-Yuan Christian University, Taiwan were: Prof. Danny Wen-Yaw Chung, Ph.D., Department of Electronics Engineering; Prof. Hsi-Ya Huang, Ph.D., Department of Chemistry; and Dr. Fang Sheng Tsai, M.D., Ph.D. Director, Urology Department and Vice Superintendent of Academic Affairs, Ten-Chan Hospital; Biomedical Engineering Department.

From the National Dong-Hwa University, Taiwan the speakers were: Prof. Yuan-Ron Ma, Ph.D. Head, Department of Physics and Prof. Yen-Peng Ho, Ph.D. Department of Chemistry, College of Science and Engineering.

Lecturers from partner universities in Japan were (Nagoya City University) Prof. Hidehiko Nakagawa, Ph.D., from the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Prof. Kazunobu Sawamoto, Ph.D., of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences. From the University of Shiga Prefecture, the lecturers were Prof. Shuhei Ban, Ph.D., of the Department of Ecosystem Studies, School of Environmental Science, while from Hiroshima University, the speakers were Prof. Tsunehiro Aki, Ph.D., and Prof. Yoshiko Okamura, Ph.D., from the Department of Molecular Biotechnology, Graduate School of Advanced Sciences of Matter.

Experts from the four different departments of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� College of Science who shared their research studies along the line of identified categories were Assoc. Prof. Cecilia I. Banag, Ph.D., Asst. Prof. Richard Thomas B. Pavia, Jr., Ph.D., Assoc. Prof. Pia Marie S.P. Albano, Ph.D., and Asst. Prof. Loida Medina of the Department of Biological Sciences; Asst. Prof. Glenda D.L.R. Delos Reyes, Ph.D. and Ms. Michelle Inciong, M.S., of the Department of Mathematics and Physics; Assoc. Prof. Karen S. Santiago, Ph.D., Associate Director, Office of International Relations and Programs, Asst. Prof. Oliver Villaflores, Ph.D. , and Asst. Prof. Dharmatov Rahula B. Albano, Ph.D., of the Department of Chemistry; and Engr. Angelito A. Silverio, Ph.D., of the Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering, Faculty of Engineering.

The symposium, which was chaired by Prof. Ma. Carlota B. Decena, Ph.D., was attended by more than 200 participants composed of researchers, faculty members, and students from ��ϲ�ֱ�� and from other schools.
