Prof. Kim Gerald Medallon, Mr. Allan James Tan, and alumni Ancilla Diamante (OT 2019) and Edel Anne Asuzano (OT 2019), in presenting 6 research posters on disability-inclusive education in the marketplace section alongside PIDS.

Two research outputs, 鈥淐haracterizing Success Indicators of Disability-Inclusive Education in the Philippines鈥� and 鈥淎llied Health Care in the Philippine Education Setting: Conceptualizing Occupational Therapy Roles by Philippine Public School Professionals,鈥� generated insights about the success indicators of an inclusive education program and how occupational therapists are viewed by the public school sector.

Meanwhile, three researches tackled the effectiveness of the programs included for inclusive education, encompassing early detection and intervention, and the Equality and Non-Discrimination Module for the peers of the children with disability: 鈥淥utcomes of Early Detection and Intervention of Children with Disability: Perspective from Philippine Public School Administrators and Teachers鈥�, 鈥淗ow do parents of Children with Disability perceive outcomes of Early Detection and Intervention鈥�, 鈥淐an the Equality and Non-Discrimination Module improve knowledge, skills and attitudes of peers of Children with Disability?鈥�

Lastly, one study probed into experiences of teachers and parents in implementing inclusion: (鈥淓mbracing Challenges Amidst Diverging Views in Philippine Public Schools: Voices of Teachers and Parents in Transitioning to Disability-Inclusive Settings鈥�).

Researches they presented were all participatory action researches in partnership with Save the Children鈥檚 KASALI (Kabataang Aralin sa Lahat Ibahagi), an inclusive education program, which is currently being scaled up. These researches are evidence-based advocacies in response to the social issue of overlapping marginalization experienced by children and youth with disabilities, with the intention of influencing local policies for the welfare of all children.

The paper, which Medallon co-authored with fellow OT faculty members (lead author), and Mr. Allan James T. Tan, MSOT, aimed to 鈥渄etermine the perspectives of public elementary school teachers and principals on the role of OT in inclusive education.鈥� Using key informant interviews, focus group discussion, and review of records, the descriptive study found that while the participants had a positive attitude toward occupational therapists in an inclusive education setting, there was 鈥渃onsiderable role confusion鈥hich can limit effective collaboration鈥nd impede the referral system.鈥�

The non-government organization 鈥淪ave the Children鈥� has as one of its projects 鈥�Kabataang-Aralin Sa Lahat Ay Ibahagi鈥� (KASALI), which provides opportunities for children with disabilities (CWD) to be part of the inclusive education program. To achieve this, a referral system between teachers and allied health professionals, particularly occupational therapists, is desired. Thus, the research was conceived.
