The Director and Assistant Director of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education (RCSSED) bagged international and national research prizes, respectively, for their doctoral projects in Australian universities.

RCSSED Director Jeremaiah M. Opiniano (The University of Adelaide) won the 2024 Dissertation Award from the Mixed Methods International Research Association (MMIRA) for his doctoral project titled “Overseas Remittances and Rural Hometown Investing: Towards an Understanding of the Migration-and-Local Development Nexus.”聽

His PhD project, in May 2021, had already won the John Lewis Medal of Excellence for Outstanding Doctoral Research in Geography, from the Royal Geographical Society of South Australia (RGSSA), where Adelaide belongs.

MMIRA鈥檚 dissertation awards, the Association said, 鈥渞ecognize a beginning scholar completing original research whose dissertation has made an outstanding contribution to the field of mixed methods research鈥.聽 Applicants to the 2024 MMIRA dissertation award must have the PhD thesis or dissertation defended / passed during the period December 1, 2020 to September 30, 2023.

Meanwhile, RCSSED Assistant Director Pia Patricia P. Tenedero (Macquarie University) will receive this year’s Virginia A. Miralao Excellence in Research Award (VAMERA) from the Philippine Social Science Council (PSSC).

Tenedero won the award for her book titled聽Communication that Counts: Language Practice and Ideology in Globalized Accounting聽that comes from her PhD thesis at Macquarie University. The book was published as part of the聽Language at Work聽series by publisher Multilingual Matters, based in Bristol in the United Kingdom.

VAMERA honors former PSSC Executive Director Dr. Virginia Miralao, and the prize comes from a 2012 grant to PSSC by Professor Emerita Dr. Belinda Aquino of the University of Hawaii at Manoa in the US. The award, handed out to a published journal article, book chapter or book, serves as an incentive (i.e., below 45 years old) 鈥渢o pursue original and meaningful research鈥.

Tenedero, currently an honorary research fellow at Macquarie鈥檚 Department of Linguistics, will receive a unique trophy made by noted visual artist Toym Leon Imao.

Both awardees belong to the Faculty of Arts and LettersJournalism and English programs, respectively.

Drs. Yan Tan (primary) and Dianne Marie Rudd (co-supervisor) advised Opiniano鈥檚 project, while Distinguished Professor Ingrid Piller and Dr. Loy Lising acted as primary and co-supervisors, respectively of Tenedero.

The individual citations of the two officials come as RCSSED received the Outstanding Research Institution Award, for Social Sciences and the Humanities, from the National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP) last March.

鈥淪undays with Domingo鈥 was co-authored by Asst. Prof. Pia Patricia P. Tenedero, Ph.D. of the Faculty of Arts and Letters and missionary priest Fr. Dom Flores, SVD. Inspired by Mitch Albom鈥檚 international best-seller Tuesdays with Morrie, Tenedero co-narrates the adventures of the 90-year-old Filipino Divine Word missionary from Abra to Australia. Pia and Fr. Dom met and became friends during her four-year stay at the SVD-owned student accommodation in Marsfield, New South Wales during her PhD candidature.

The pocket-sized vocation storybook was virtually launched on September 4, 2022 in an intimate Zoom gathering that brought together the authors鈥 family and friends from the Philippines, Australia, and the United States. Among those who graced the event are Asst. Prof. Ailil Alvarez (Director of the 六合彩直播开奖 Publishing House), Fr. Viet Nguyen, SVD (SVD Australia Province Mission Secretary), Fr. Randy Flores, SVD (Parish Priest of the Sacred Heart Parish Shrine in Kamuning, Quezon City), and Fr. Tony Moreno, SJ (former Provincial Superior of the Philippine Jesuit and current President of the Jesuit Conference of Asia Pacific). Both Fr. Randy and Fr. Tony are nephews of Fr. Dom. Pia鈥檚 cousins from the Diocese of San Jose, California were also present鈥擣r. Mike Gazzingan and Fr. Mark Gazzingan, who attended the 六合彩直播开奖 Central Seminary and 六合彩直播开奖 Graduate School, respectively.

This personal collaboration is also a charity mission. All proceeds from the book sales will support several charity and vocation initiatives in the Philippines and Australia. The primary beneficiaries are the Alternative Learning Systems run by the Arnold Janssen Catholic Mission Foundation, Inc. for out-of-school youth, indigenous communities, and the elderly in Tagaytay, and the reconstruction of a temporary chapel for the parishioners of the St. Catherine of Alexandria Church in Tayum, Abra, that was heavily damaged by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake on July 27, 2022. A portion of the book sales in Australia will be allocated to various vocation and charity projects of the SVD Australia Mission Office.

Tenedero鈥檚 first non-academic book project was part of Logos Publications鈥 new titles. It is also available through Shopee and Lazada for only Php 150.

Arts and Letters faculty member Asst. Prof. Pia Patricia P. Tenedero, Ph.D., discussed her perspectives on the gamification of academic publishing during an international panel of Early Career Researchers (ECR). The webinar about academic publishing was held on December 9, 2021, organized by the Next Generation Literacies Research Network, which she joined after being awarded honorary postgraduate associate of Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

While recognizing the value given to high-impact journal publications, Tenedero reflected on the humanitarian purpose of scholarly publishing which prioritizes making quality knowledge accessible to those who need it most.

This purpose, according to the researcher, can be achieved not only through journals, but also through research blogs, research-based workshops, lectures, monographs, and various other means of knowledge promotion.

One of her hopes as an ECR is the decentralization of the notion of academic publishing as reflected in university performance matrix, which appears to be overly fixated on impact factor metrics. This research network is an interdisciplinary group of established and emerging researchers across the globe who are invested in social participation and linguistic diversity. It is a product of a trilateral partnership of the universities of Fudan, China; Hamburg, Germany; and Macquarie, Australia. Macquarie University Professor Ingrid Piller described Tenedero鈥檚 talk as 鈥渢he best piece on academic publishing I鈥檝e heard in a long time, or ever鈥.鈥 She blogged about it at https://www.languageonthemove.com/publishing-is-an-insiders-game/. For ECRs in language studies, who are looking to join a network of researchers to inspire and train them as they navigate the goals and rules of global knowledge sharing, Tenedero extended her invitation for them to join the Next Generation Literacies Research Network. Aspiring ECRs may connect with the network through Tenedero or by checking the details in the website through this QR code:

In another academic undertaking, Tenedero presented the initial findings of her current research that examines the English language learning experiences in Australia of Catholic missionaries from Asia and Africa during the Australian Linguistics Society Conference held online on December 7, 2021. The conference was hosted by the La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia.

This project, supported by the 六合彩直播开奖 Research Center for Social Science and Education, is a novel contribution to current scholarship in Catholic missionary work and language acquisition. Studies in this area have mostly focused on narratives of white Anglophone missionaries and their experience of learning and documenting indigenous languages.

Tenedero鈥檚 study complements this literature by considering the linguistic implication of the reversal in mission flows. The decrease in Europe-born missionaries and the increase in religious workers from the Global South doing their ministry in Global North settings foregrounds English as a central language of mission.

Recognizing the priority of language for successful missionary work, the study examines the language learning practices, challenges, and ideologies of missionaries from non-Anglophone backgrounds who were sent to Australia to learn English.

The findings of this research have potential implications in the English language training of missionaries across the globe.

An academic lecture was organized by the Faculty of Arts and Letters where the three faculty members who have recently earned their Ph.D. degrees as Graduates of Offshore Programs delivered research papers on the Zoom platform on September 25, 2021.

Spearheaded by the Dean鈥檚 Office, with the support of the Department of Philosophy, Department of English Language Studies, and the Journalism Program, the webinar featured the faculty members鈥 Doctoral research outputs and their academic journey in completing degrees in Australia.

Dr. Darlene Demandante, who graduated from the Macquarie University, delivered her lecture on 鈥淭hinking of Politics as Political Subjectivation.鈥

Demandante presented her dissertation on the notion of political subjectivity using the work of Jacques Ranci猫re, a contemporary political philosopher. Anchoring her research question on Ranci猫re鈥檚 work, Demandante attempted to show that the way Ranci猫re conceptualized his notion of political subjectivity, including its hesitations, provides invaluable material for reflection on how we should understand politics at present and on how we should think of our specific roles as political subjects. Demandante鈥檚 lecture concludes by suggesting a reading of Ranci猫re that is focused on the 鈥渆xperiences鈥 of the subject of politics.

Dr. Pia Patricia Tenedero, who earned a degree in Linguistics from Macquarie University, discussed 鈥淐hallenging Language and Academic Myths: Gems from My Ph.D. Journey.鈥

Tenedero expounded that doing a Ph.D. involves questioning ideologies that people consider common sense or simply take at face value, like the ‘publish or perish’ discourse in academia and favoring English as the only language that matters in global professional communication. She added that many of these discourses that are often reproduced in institutional interactions are, in fact, myths and mere social constructs that need to be challenged, especially when they are cultivating a toxic culture of competition and perpetuating stereotypes.

Catching the attention of the audience was Tenedero鈥檚 emphasis on the responsibility of the researcher. She shared that it is a researcher’s moral responsibility to share the new knowledge discovered, but publication in high-impact journals is not the only way. An important question to ask is: “Who needs to benefit from this knowledge?” Then share that knowledge creatively to make sure that it is accessible to those it attempts to help.

In his lecture on 鈥淥verseas Remittances and Rural Hometown Investing: In Lands of Green, Harvests Come Across Seas,鈥 Dr. Jeremaiah Opiniano, who obtained a degree in Human Geography from the University of Adelaide, spoke of his Ph.D. thesis on luring overseas remittances for the development of the rural hometowns of overseas Filipinos.

Covering the municipalities of San Nicolas (Ilocos Norte) and Moncada (Tarlac), Opiniano said using remittances for savings and investment hinges on what the communities and financial institutions have to offer locally as well as financial relationships within families having overseas-based breadwinners.

Opiniano, who was recently appointed as the Assistant Director of the Research Center for Social Sciences and Education, also inspired the audience with his story of resiliency and courage in earning his degree amidst the challenge of the pandemic.

The webinar, which was part of the Quasquicentennial anniversary of the Faculty of Arts and Letters, was attended by its faculty members and students in their senior year under the Philosophy, English Language Studies, and Journalism programs.

Faculty of Arts and Letters Dean Prof. Marilu R. Madrunio Ph.D., together with 六合彩直播开奖 Department of English Chair Prof. Rachelle B. Lintao, Ph.D., Asst. Prof. Pia Patricia Tenedero, Ph.D., and Atty. Selenne Anne A. Leynes presented their papers during the 3rd International Conference on English Across the Curriculum (EAC) held from May 20 to 21, 2021, via Zoom.

The two-day event was co-organized by a cross-institutional teams from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, City University of Hong Kong, and Hong Kong Baptist University.

The paper of Dean Madrunio, Lintao, and Tenedero examined the reshaping of the English curriculum in higher education in the Philippines during the COVID-19 pandemic. Their study, focusing on the English language curriculum, explored online teaching as a 鈥渇igured world鈥 that 鈥渢ake[s] shape within and grants shape to the coproduction of activities, discourses, performances, and artifacts.鈥

The research investigated the new system of comprehensive online teaching, which reshaped English language instruction in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It presented the thematic analysis of institutional documents such as university continuity plans, online teaching training materials, and memos that set the parameters for the digital staging of English language units offered in the focused disciplines.

Lawyer-English Language mentor Selenne Anne Leynes presented her paper titled 鈥淢etadiscourse Markers in Bar Exam Essays.鈥 Using a contrastive genre analysis method and Hyland鈥檚 taxonomy, the study aimed to determine the metadiscourse markers present in Philippine Bar Exam Essays and New York Bar Exam Essays and the cultural features revealed by such use in the two writing communities.

As culture plays an essential and important role in defining writer characteristics in different writing communities, and as culture is dynamic, studies like this can help future Bar examinees to answer Bar exam questions with ease and confidence, and augment the troubling passing rate in the Bar examinations.

With over a hundred paper presentations, the conference brought together experts and colleagues from all over the world to share research and insights on English Across the Curriculum (EAC), Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC), and Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL).
