2022 is ��ϲ�ֱ��’s most productive year yet for Scopus-indexed publications

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� reached its highest number of scholarly materials indexed in Scopus in 2022.

Running tally from Scopus, the Elsevier-owned scholarly indexing service, as of February 27, 2023 shows that ��ϲ�ֱ�� (Scopus ID number: 60071488) had 354 scholarly materials (mostly journal articles) in 2022. Scopus adds that the 354 materials are broken down into published works (318) and “articles in press” (36). These materials were authored solely by Thomasians or were co-authored by Thomasians and research partners from other academic and non-academic affiliations.

The 354 materials cover journal articles (274), book reviews (35), conference papers lodged in proceedings (22), “notes” (22), book chapters (six), letters to the editor (six), editorials (two) and erratum (1). Spanning multiple disciplinal areas, the leading disciplines where the scholarly materials were lodged came from “Medicine” (128), “Social Sciences” (62), “Agricultural and Biological Sciences” (42), “Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology” (40), and “Arts and Humanities” (32). The ��ϲ�ֱ�� materials landed in 26 categorizations of disciplines in the Scopus database for 2022.

This 2022 total is the highest since Scopus tallied scholarly works authored by researchers—faculty members and students—from ��ϲ�ֱ�� since 1946.

Among those currently affiliated with ��ϲ�ֱ��, the top producers of Scopus-indexed academic journal articles tallied in 2022 is Prof. Daniel Joseph Berdida of the College of Nursing (15), Prof. Marc Eric Reyes, PhD of the College of Science (13), Prof. Frederick Masangkay of the Faculty of Pharmacy (11), former Faculty of Engineering academic staff Adrvin Kester Ong (11), Prof. Ross Vasquez, PhD of the Faculty Pharmacy (11), Prof. Marri Jmelou Roldan also of the Faculty of Pharmacy (10), and Prof. Allan de Guzman, PhD of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (10).

Meanwhile, out of the 2,042 journal articles that Thomasian researchers have produced for Scopus-indexed journals since Scopus began the count, De Guzman has produced the most number: 129. Professors Grecebio Jonathan Alejandro, Dr. rer. nat. of the Graduate School and the College of Science (97), Thomas Edison E. dela Cruz, Dr. rer. nat. (63), Fortunato B. Sevilla III, PhD (60), Allan Patrick Macabeo, Dr. rer. nat. of the College of Science (55), Raymond Rosales, MD (53) of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, Rey Donne S. Papa, PhD (47) of the College of Science, Marc Eric S. Reyes, PhD (44) of the College of Science, and Sandra Navarra, MD (42) of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery followed suit.

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� Hospital (Scopus ID: 60071489), for its part, has separately produced 509 scholarly materials since 1955, and 45 in 2022. Medical doctors teaching at ��ϲ�ֱ�� also affiliate themselves with the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Hospital.

The Scopus index is the database used by Times Higher Education (THE) and Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) when tallying the research productivity of universities in their annual world university rankings. ��ϲ�ֱ�� has been ranked in the QS World University Rankings for multiple years, and recently received a “Reporter” status in the 2023 THE World University Rankings last year.

The running tally of scholarly materials indexed in Scopus shows that ��ϲ�ֱ�� produced 225 materials in 2017, 175 in 2018, 228 in 2019, 278 in 2020, and 333 in 2021.

Rosales of Neurology appointed to External Scientific Advisory Board of Harvard Medical School

, Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Medicine-��ϲ�ֱ�� (JM��ϲ�ֱ��), has been appointed to the Scientific Advisory Board for the Collaborative Center for X-Linked Dystonia Parkinsonism (XDP) at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

XDP is a devastating neurodegenerative disease, indigenous in the Panay Islands of the Philippines. This Advisory Board has been tasked to design, implement and monitor the First Multi-Center Natural History of XDP in the Philippines, which will be the groundwork for future clinical trials to ameliorate the symptoms of XDP.

Rosales, a neurologist from the , has published over 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals and participated as a site principal investigator in a number of international, multicentre trials. His research interest spans dystonia and parkinsonism, neuromuscular disorders, pain, botulinum toxin science and therapy. He is an Academic Editor for Neurology and Psychiatry of Medicine Open Access Journal (USA) and editorial board member of various movement disorder journals, a book editor with three titles to his name, and chapter author in ISBN books. He has received various research and international publication awards from ��ϲ�ֱ��.

In 2016, he received the for 2016 for the field of Neuroscience and Behavior, and in 2017, was the first Thomasian to be listed in the list.

Calimag of Medicine emphasizes link between research and social agenda in 2019 Discurso

of the talked about the important link between research and social agenda in the 2019 Discurso de Apertura (Opening Lecture), the first academic activity of the ��ϲ�ֱ�� after the year was officially declared open.

The Tale of Two Rivers
Calimag’s discurso was entitled “Research and Social Agenda: The Tale of Two Rivers (Of Dead Rivers and the River of Life).” “It is my intent to poke and stir all so that by the ripples we create, we can make positive change.”

Focusing on the interconnectedness of all life, Calimag stressed that “from ancient times, nature revealed an interconnected life force to humans in the form of rhythm, patterns, and cycles.” This revelation has been neglected by humans, for “instead of protecting it, many have chosen to exploit it.”

Calimag likewise cited the second encyclical of Pope Francis, entitled “Laudato Si,” in which the Pontiff “calls the world to acknowledge the urgency of environmental challenges and join him in embarking on a new path.” Former US Vice-President Al Gore’s book An Inconvenient Truth was also mentioned for underscoring the planetary emergency known as “global warming.”

Changes and adaptation
Enumerating problems like deforestation, natural disasters, air and water pollution, mismanagemnet and abuse of resources, changing climate patterns, and the like, Calimag noted that as nature changes, so, too, do organisms like mosquitos and ticks “adapt to new environment, which lead to shifts in spatial distribution, seasonality, and incidence rates of disease…as they move to different regions.”

Pursuing the journey of a researcher
In her opening statement, Calimag reflected on what her life as a researcher brought her. “Unbridled by traditions, research has been for me a lifelong journey of discovery of who I am, of the world around me, and the meaning of life.

Calimag served as President of the country’s premier medical association, the Philippine Medical Association, from 2014-2016. She earned her medical degree in 1981 and her doctorate in educational management in 2011, both from ��ϲ�ֱ��.

138 faculty members receive distinction at 20th Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ�� Awards

The ��ϲ�ֱ�� in partnership with the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Faculty Union, recognized faculty members, librarians, and guidance counsellors for their service to the University in the annual Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ�� (Honor of ��ϲ�ֱ��) Awards held on May 10, 2019, at the ��ϲ�ֱ�� Medicine Auditorium.

Now in its 20th year, the theme for the celebration was, “Dalawang Dekadang Pagpapala, Pasasalamat, at Pagdiririwang sa Tagumpay ng Gurong Tomasino.” (Two Decades of Blessing, Gratitude, and Celebration of the Success of Thomasian Teachers)

In his message, ��ϲ�ֱ�� Rector , commended the appropriateness of the theme, “…sapagkat sa nakaraang dalawang dekada ay maraming Tomasinong guro ang naglaan ng oras at panahon sa pagtuturo ng mahusay, sa patuloy na pagsasaliksik at paglikha, sa pagtulong sa pamayanan at paglilingkod nang tapat sa Unibersidad.” (…because in the last 20 years, many Thomasian mentors have dedicated their time to excellent teaching, continued research and innovation, and being active in the community and loyal service to the University.)

However, the Father Rector also emphasized that the true success of teachers lie not in the number of years of service, and cannot be measured by the number of awards received or research works produced.

“Kung susuriing mabuti, malaking bahagi ng kanyang tagumpay ay mamamalas sa kinalalagyan, o kalidad at antas ng pamumuhay ng mga magaaral na dumaan sa kanyang masusing pagtitistis at pagtatasa, at matiyagang paghuhubog sa kanilang mga kamalayan, upang maayos na matimbang ang katuwiran laban sa kamalian, matutuhan ang tamang paraan kung paano umiwas sa mga panlilinlang, at magkaroon ng lakas ng loob na manindigan sa katotohanan,” Fr. Dagohoy explained. (If we would contemplate it, a large part of [a teacher’s] success is manifested in the status or quality and level of living of students passing through their thorough scrutiny and assessment, and patiently molding their consciousness, in order to properly weigh out righteousness against error, to learn the right way to avoid deceptions, and to have the courage to stand up for the truth.)

Quoting the philosopher George Steiner, the Father Rector reminded the faculty of their mission, “To awaken in another human being powers, dreams beyond one’s own; to induce in others a love for that which one loves; to make of one’s inward present their future; that is a threefold adventure like no other.”

Former University Rector and former Chairman of the Commission on Higher Education Rev. Fr. Rolando V. de la Rosa, O.P., was the guest speaker. In his address, he challenged faculty members to remember that teaching is not merely a profession, but also a profound vocation. He discussed, “[As God’s call,] a vocation is a fundamental decision in life, defines the person’s presence in the world, expresses one’s deepest identity, and orients one’s actions towards destiny.”

Following the address was the awarding of the Gawad Benavides or the service awards for milestone years. Thirty-seven faculty members received the Gawad Benavides for 20 years, while 38 mentors were awarded for 25 years of service. Twenty received the award for 30 years of service, and 23 were lauded for 35 years of service.

For 40 years of service in the University, eight were recognized, namely: ., from the ; Asst. Prof. Carmelita Cardona and Assoc. Prof. Rodolfo Rabor from the ; Prof. Ma. Corazon Zaida Gamilla, M.D., Prof. Josephine Lumitao, M.D., and Assoc. Prof. Edgardo Orlina, M.D., from the ; Assoc. Prof. Ma. Rebecca Penafiel from the ; and Assoc. Prof. Evangeline Timbang from the . Dr. Gamilla gave the response on behalf of all awardees.

The Gawad San Alberto Magno, a special award for outstanding published research, was given to , of the Faculty of Pharmacy under the Health Sciences category (Immunology of a Fap2 peptide mimotope of Fusobacterium nucleatum and its potential use in the diagnosis of colorectal cancer); Asst. Prof. Andrea G. Vargas, Ph.D., of the Faculty of Pharmacy under the Science and Technology category (Cloning molecular analysis, and developmental expression of 3 oleosin cDNA isoforms in coconut [Cocos nucifera L.]); and Assoc. Prof. Moises Norman Z. Garcia, Ph.D., and Assoc. Prof. Maria Rosario Virginia C. Garcia, Ph.D., of the under the Social Sciences and Education category (The Environmental Literacy of Elementary School Teachers based in the City of Manila and Nueva Ecija Province). , of the under the Humanities and Cultural Studies category and for outstanding publication, namely, for his research work “Ang Tagalabas sa Panitikan” while his book “Ang Nawawala” earned him the Outstanding Book award under the Humanities and Cultural Studies category.

The Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz is given to those with outstanding achievements or are recognized in the national or international scene. The awardees were: College of Science mentors , who received the Alexander von Humboldt Research Award and ., who was named 2018 Outstanding Young Scientist in Pharmaceutical Sciences by the National Academy of Science and Technology Philippines, and Novartis Next Generation Scientist by the Novartis Pharma Switzerland; Faculty of Arts and Letters mentor Mr. Paul A. Castillo who won the third place in the Talaang Ginto Makata ng Taon 2018 given by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino; faculty member and Director who was named Greatest Individual for Education Inclusion in the 2017 Edu Tech Asia Awards by the EduTech Asia / Terrapin; Faculty of Pharmacy Dean , who was named ‘Outstanding Pharmacist’ in the 2018 Outstanding Professional of the Year Award by the Professional Regulation Commission; and Dean Prof. Patricia M. Empleo, Ph.D., who was named to the Global Accounting ‘Hall of Fame’ by the Institute of Certified Management Accountant.

With the theme “Gurong May Dignidad, Turong May Kalidad” (A Teacher with Dignity, Teaching with Quality), the 18th Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ�� (Honor of ��ϲ�ֱ��) Awards recognized the faculty members who excelled in their respective fields and earned honors inside and outside the country, as well as served the University for at least two decades, last May 11, 2017 at the Medicine Auditorium.

“Napakalaki ang nagawa at naiambag ng mg Tomasinong guro sa mga ma-tagumpay na Tomasino. Sigurado ako na kabilang kayo sa inspirasyon ng mga mag-aaral sa kanilang pagsusumikap na makamit at matupad ang kanilang mga pangarap. Hindi lamang iyan maliit na bagay,” Rector Rev. Fr. Herminio V. Dagohoy, O.P. said in his message. “Pinapatunayan ito ng napakaraming mahuhusay at kapuri-puring indibidwal na mula sa iba’t-ibang larangan na nagmula sa ating pamantasan,”

According to Fr. Dagohoy, the theme underscores the relationship between dignity and quality. “Ang dignidad ng guro ay nakabase sa kanyang atas, sa kanyang mandato, sa kanyang responsibilidad; samakatuwid, sa kanyang tungkuling ginagampanan: ang paghubog sa mga kamalayan upang masusing timbangin ang katwiran at turuan ang mag-aaral kung papaano umiwas sa panlilinlang, manindigan sa katotohanan, at ipaglaban ang katarungan.”

“Ang saligan ng dignidad ng pagiging guro ay ayon sa antas ng kanyang pagtupad sa atas na iginagawad sa kanya; ito ang nag-aangat sa guro. Ginagawa siyang kakaiba at nagtatangi sa kanya sa ibang mga larangan,” Dagohoy added.

Give Students a Chance

Honorary Speaker Prof. Gerardo Janairo, PhD, De La Salle University Chancellor and a Thomasian from the College of Science, recalled his days in ��ϲ�ֱ�� as a BS Chemistry student who spent his college days with a bad start. Janairo turned this around, though, credited his Thomasian professors for giving him a lending hand in times of trouble and most especially in retaking the bar exams. “Sila ang mga tao na nagbigay ng inspirasyon sa akin at nagbigay ng pag-asa,” he said.

As a professor, Janairo said he preferred to handle “repeater sections” and underscored his love for both his profession and his students. Being a product of second chances himself, Janairo justified that he will do what he can to bring the best of his students: “Buong tiyaga ko silang tinuturuan, tinutulungan, at binibigyan ng pag-asa. Marami akong mag-aaral na nabigyan ng pagkakataon tulad ng ginawa ng dati kong mga guro sa ��ϲ�ֱ��.”

The annual recognition program conferred the following awards: Gawad Benavides (for length of service); Gawad San Alberto Magno (for outstanding research); Gawad Santo Domingo (for outstanding community development program); Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz (for outstanding achievement, as recognized nationally or internationally); and the Hall of Fame Award (for receiving three awards in the Dangal ng ��ϲ�ֱ��, except the Gawad Benavides).
